  • Man, at 1:23 he might have messed up what he was trying to do, but I dig it.

I really liked that squawk he made.

Sometimes the greatest discoveries come from mistakes.

  • @SupahflyJazzguy haha plus he has a good snes of humor haha!

  • @jibsmokestack1 please forgive my ignorance. i posted that comment long before i knew anything and anything, especially jazz. i now know a lot more, thank God haha.

  • Lead horn, who is it?

  • Is that Will Lee & Peter Erskine? nasty

  • I hate it when the sound is a half second behind the goddamn video. Otherwise great upload.

  • @Cvern777 As Miles once said, if you make a mistake... repeat it three times

  • @Cvern777 WASN'T THAT FREAKING GREAT!!!!

  • 1:23 Michael Brecker being human for 3 seconds!!!

  • @Beuma that's true but only for 3 seconds

  • @Beuma Michael Brecker is not human. It was the reed's fault. LOL.

  • This is absolutely AWSOME!!

  • El que toca saxo baritono es Claude Delangle????

  • бля, даже когда Майкл ошибается, это звучит обалденно! самый лучший тенорист на всей планете и подобных ему небыло,нет не будет!земля пухом...

  • is that Erskine on drums?

  • @ukkelberg Si señor: Pete Erskine on drums

  • god, I only wish I had half the confidence of michael when I play. He is so comfortable with his horn, it's insane.

  • i met randy brecker! FUKING AWSMOE! he's MUCH much better!

  • Seriously, where are the two douchebags who "dislike" this?

  • At 0:54 and 1:01 the trombone player looks like Toby from The Office (US version).

  • this is the shit right here!

  • I'm slightly embarrassed that my prof Snape comment has received the most thumbs-up. I didn't want to divert attention from the excellent musicianship.

  • just to let everyone know, the soprano saxophonist looks like snape :)

  • @natas776655 looks more like stephen king! =)

  • @bass11player91 That may be so but the notion of Professor Snape playing the saxophone for the Brecker Brothers is so ridiculous that it induces a higher degree of mirth. (I can hardly believe we're having this conversation. Who would have thought?)

  • @jazzzzdude HAHAHA i know right! well i may have a solution! Stephen King in a professor snape costume playing with the Brecker Brothers...

  • @bass11player91 With his wand resting on the music stand, surrounded by various sized bottles of potions and a scowl on his face.

  • 1:21 is my favorite moment on YouTube. Only because he plays the same thing and nails it the second time.

  • Brecker could be louder....but awesome.

  • Miss you, cat!!! wet eyes.....

  • no wonder michael won a grammy for that solo

  • wonderful

  • uber-fusion

  • I didn't know professor Snape played soprano.

  • @jazzzzdude hahaha

  • @jazzzzdude DAMN you got there before me haha

  • @jazzzzdude

    hahahaha xD

  • @jazzzzdude WTF? XDDD

  • @ForeverTheBeat7 I know. Sorry!

  • @jazzzzdude LMAO but a very chubby Snape lol

  • @jazzzzdude wow, thats the first time i think ive ever truly lol'ed at a comment. well done.

  • @jazzzzdude HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Yeah like this alot.

  • the drummer is master peter erskine!

  • Great tune to practice sight reading... or 'Mary Had a Little lamb".

Both challenging in their own ways.

  • I like Michaels face when the drummer comes in to 1 8th to early :) :) :) 1:19

  • Damn! I really hate when I discover some seriously awesome players AFTER they're dead

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN Man, I first met Michael as a junior in high school about 9 yrs ago, & just 3 yrs later I had the privilege of driving him around Houston as a soph in college when he performed at our school's jazz fest. Not saying that to brag, I just realize how really fucking fortunate I was to be in the presence of true greatness. He was humble, funny, and insanely brilliant. I will never forget my personal moment with him. And, of course, he proceeded to play the shit out of that concert.

  • seriously!? legit? that sounds incredible.

  • Trust me...it's harder when you follow a guy's career for twenty hears and suddenly the music is over.

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN yea i know!

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN that happened to me with hubbard 3 days after...

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN Tell me about it man, I was just thinking there is going to be plenty more musicians that are dead that I will end up admiring.

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN I was just thinking the very same thing here.

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN WDR big band are still on the scene.

  • too bad this version is so slow.. big band probably couldn't keep up with normal tempo

  • It would be hard to play it at the normal tempo if you don't play the tune on a regular basis. Also would be difficult for the trombones to move their slides that fast!

  • @berenkillu I prefer it a little slower as on the original recording. I think if it is much faster it loses the feel. If it's played faster I think the rhythm has to change to accommodate the phrasing.

  • Yeah, it is a little slower than what I would play it at, and.. is that trumpet hes playing the famous black lacquer martin committee with the golden design?

  • I prefere it at this speed, the funk is lost any faster.

  • so true.

  • @pedroshizzle95a Randy plays a Yamaha.

  • this is a little slower thann some of the other recordings

  • yes bjorliin, that is erskine on skins

  • is that peter erskine on the drums?

  • yes!

  • Brecker said once in an interview that he discovered harmonics and the uniqueness of the "accoustic horn" because of them after playing the EWI extensively. I tend to agree with him.

  • LL, lots of chromatic and 4th interval runs from the Most brothers' books--:) Hey, its fun impressing with "polytone" doodling, harmonics "burns" and growls, etc., bag of "modern sax tricks". I think Brecker was just having a lot of fun.

  • Brekcer was not years or months ahead or behind. Brecker was Brecker, someone with his own personality and definitely someone who had fun playing. sorry to see a good player die with leukemia, a painful type of cancer even among cancers. Bob Berg in an auto accident, Brecker with cancer. This is a sad decade for us sax players.

  • it is!

  • I'm dissapointed there are no black players in this band! Where have all the great Jazz players gone? You cannot get a more Afro Funk Jazz sound then this. If you didn't see the video you'd imagine black people with Afro's grooving.

  • probably 'cause there is not so many black people in german!

  • There is an older video and they have black guys in the band. On Bass and Drums I think. Anyway doesn't really matter.

  • The Trumpetier is a Genius. He halfed-valved that bar at 3:19 my god..i play trumpet for 5 years and that is still a task for me..he plays it with such precision..

  • Sounds interesting, I've not tried the trumpet. Haven't got a clue what half valving is!

I'm facinated by the techniques needed with Valve instruments, totally different mind set to playing string instruments which i am used to.

  • the trumpter's name is randy brecker the older brother of the sax player michael brecker.

  • there is no right or wrong in music at this level... only good or bad choices in my opinion... he didn't like of his choice, end of story... MB comes back and just kills everyone!!!

  • I can listen passively or analytically to playing but I won't have an Orgasm over one note being "wrong". it's part of the game, he didn't look pissed off to me more of a shock. He was more like Oh shit I didn't mean that! Oh well carry on.

  • On 2:16 Peter and Mike are just playing off each other. An absolutely hair-raising experience. MIchael is just so a phenomenal player. I think one his successful actions was the fact that even at his stage of success he was still getting music lessons. Incredible. I guess that's why he was always fresh and with the killer monster chops.

  • MIchael Brecker was light years ahead of his generation given the fact that after him there hasn't been any other innovative genius on his instrument. Only immitators.

  • It's hasn't been very long since Michael Brecker died. It was at least 15 years after Bird died that Coltrane came out of the woodwork. Give it time and another great will rise up.

  • Comment removed

  • @dq9 Coltrane died 12 years after Bird died. 1955 and 1967!

  • Randy Brecker sounds better on this take than any other of the takes I've seen or heard on Youtube.

  • Gentlemen. If we could just but make these type of mistakes we would be musical geniuses. Keep in mind that Mike was not 100% physically when he made this recording.

  • Big rythm Section! Will Lee and Peter Erskine.. :):):):)

  • WOW WHAT THE HECK WAS THE KEYBOARD UP TO @ 0:54!!!! That was PEHNOMONAL!!!

  • Michael Brecker fucking insane

  • Great composition! Great Performance! 5 Stars

  • Dude. When Mike brings it he BRINGS it. Everytime I hear this recording I can't help but make faces of delight~

His music raises my endorphins more than anything else.

That emotional effect, after all, the purpose of music no? X)

  • its perfect ... but doesnt groove in any way

  • Why is everyone having an orgasm over one bad note?

  • Because this is one of the few mistakes anyone has seen Michael make. Its kind of a big deal, you can tell by the look on his face when it happens. He is still a god though, no matter what happened in this performance haha

  • @95vaghelaa2

Because there are two groups of people loving music:

    1. talented ones who just make music and dont care about anything else

    2. untalented ones who give up, become music critics out of frustration and moan about wrong notes :P ;) *scnr*

  • LOL I am a musician, played 15 years guitar.

Even if you were joking that is SO fucking true.

I cannot stand failed musicians and music critics who think they are intelligent and poke out every single nook and cranny like its a maths class instead of Music. You do not have to understand music theory to enjoy jazz, just LISTEN to it as a whole or analyze it if you wish, either is legitmate.

  • @95vaghelaa2 he even managed to make the bad note sound funky, i thought it was great

  • WHAT? Michael Brecker was HUMAN? 1:22

  • ýou´re right

    looks funny

  • It looks so funny when he tries the E (or Eb?) at the begining in the solo and fails and he's like "Ah cmon man!"

  • For anyone that can comment on a SINGLE NOTE mistake from a genius who certainly didn't make many, well i think it shows alot about those individuals state of mind. Do better if you can

  • yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

  • who's back there playing the screams on trumpet?

  • I've listened to probably over 100 albums featuring Mike Brecker and seen him live in-person at least a dozen times ( maybe more like 20 ) , and that's the first time I ever heard him make a real mistake.

    RIP Michael.

  • haha ya i was wondering that myself

also something i also find out today is that often, especially in his later days, he was having problems with his neck, as he fractured it and had bone marrow cancer. so he might've just been in pain, don't know for sure tho

  • Ow ! It's Well Lee on bass !! :)

  • Man, this is the worst version...

The big band is not playing tight with Brecker Brothers...

  • well its hard for 20ish people to play a riff like that completely tightly

  • Shit thats Peter Erskine on drums

  • yup if you watch the video for song for barry which is the closer to this concert it gives the names to all the players and it says peter erskine on drums

  • check him out with steely dan, It makes great music surpass great

  • Faster will be better, but I understand not every one can play like Michael and Randy.

  • yea he didn't hit the notes at the break and he got pissed, but he shows his professionalism for returning to his solo with perfect timing

  • Comment removed

  • ugh .. i agree its probably cause he kills.. and peter erskine can't fuk with him.. haha... sweet low tempo version.. but damn with dennis and stern and genus .. that version just flows so quick its kinda outstanding

  • Peter Erskine & Will Lee is STILL a pretty damn good riddim section!!

  • haha thats sucks he messed up the break haha lol. Still amazing solo! Freakin awesome thanks for posting!

  • NEeds to be faster!! Faster is sooo much sicker!

  • Comment removed

  • he fucked up his solo break. note this as a first and last for michael brecker!!!

  • He didn't exactly fuck up the break. He fucked up ONE NOTE.

  • He's michael brecker...waay better than u will ever be. Screw u. Its awesome and u know it. The positives by FAR outweigh any negatives in this song!!

  • An awesome line up!! all the hip kats playing together!

    AWESOME VIDEO!!

  • wow :)

    awesome

    5/5

  • ive never heard erskine this funky

  • Flippin Will Lee on bass too!!! I don't think he was pissed....He was like OHHHHHH.....But then came back and did the same break!!!! Jesus he is soooo F'in Bad ASS!!!!

  • is that erskine on drums?

  • Yeah

  • brecker kills!

  • Man, Michael Brecker looked so disgusted with himself about the last note of the break. =\

He's such a killer player. I bet that kind of shit doesn't happen often to him.

  • you could tell brecker was pissed about that first note! didnt even matter that whole solo rocked. could he play man. miss ya buddy

  • Does anyone know when this video was taken?

  • Year 2003 on the DVD Some Skunk Funk

  • 2003 on DVD Some Skunk Funk

  • あ ピーターアースキンだ

  • michael brecker é o melhor saxofonista del mundo

  • o melhor video de michael brecker

  • eh a little down tempo i think. or maybe the barcelona version is just faster?

  • i agree with you

  • the barcelona version is faster, i metronomed it (thats how bored i am). prefer the brothers version a lot more but the big band sounds good quality here imo

  • esse video pra mim é o melhor de todos os tempos

  • I very much must disagree with you prefering this version with big band.

The big band makes it even cooler in my opinion!

Nobody plays the sax the way Michael did!

  • It's your and I respect it. I've mine

  • where can i buy the full dvd?

  • It sounds ill with a Big-band... I really prefer the Brothers version.
