  • Mike looked great. His best condition of his career at 29 yrs. He's proof HIT works.

  • ARNOLD DOMINATES! :)

  • Why bother comparing Mike with Arnold? He couldn't even compete with Frank Zane! 0:44 says it all.. :D

  • front double, side chest, front lat spread, rear double, most muscular poses all go to arnold, any other poses that matter? ok, sorry, the forearm pose go's to mike. whoopy.

  • aaaaaannnnnndddddd mute

  • arnold wasn't his best here, he lacked size and depth. today he is still not at his best, but now its with woman and little unknown arnold children running around. like tiger woods, his role-model status, will forever be tarnished.

  • Arnold looks fine, only Mike Mentzer looks better.

    Ha!

  • this just proved to show the superior physique of arnold... even though he's not at his peak, he still managed to win with just couple months of preparation.. some of the competitors here had been preparing for over a year.

  • When Bodybuilding was about looking like a Greek God and not a mass roid freak.

  • I just recently watched both the video on this and the "lost footage". After watching I feel the outcome was spot on. Boyer Coe looked awesome. Probably the best he had ever looked. I could have even seen him in 3rd. Dickerson was splendid in all areas except chest and biceps and his posing was awesome. Zane appeared a little light but ripped to shreds and great posing too. Walker looked ripped but his chest is weird and his lower chest appears under developed.

  • @planesx12 Mike appeared uninspired and seemed to be holding a little water. He came across as arrogant and even hostile on stage at times. I think he was holding water unevenly on his back. His abs appeared to have some water at different times. With that said, his back was big and his triceps were their usual awesomeness. The only body part he won IMO was triceps. Arnold was as not at his best. He did appear a little dehydrated and his back was noticeably smaller.

  • @planesx12 Arnold clearly won hands down, biceps, shoulders and chest. Which is why he won. If you win those in most any contest, you win period. He was deficient in triceps, back and legs, but not horribly though. Just not his normal blow you away conditioning. And his legs were not as bad as many say. His calves were awesome. All the others had no chance after 5th place. Boyer may have place third if Arnold didn't enter as he had the second best arms and was ripped.

  • @planesx12 Just want to say one more thing about Mike. He appeared to wobble on stage during one of the shoots and couldn't hold his front chest pose where you put your fists on your hips. He kept re-posing as he couldn't hold it. This occurred twice and one of them was when he was standing next to Arnold. He re-posed four or five times and it looked bad.

  • Theres so many different opinions and controversy over the 1980 olympia, personally Mentzer should have won this one and the previous year too. would have loved to have seen him gone on into the late 80's

  • arnold looked bigger and better than everyone else, arnold would still win today in my opinion

  • Mentzer was definitely the uncrowned 1980 Mr Olympia.

  • ARNOLD WAS STILL THE BEST! He was just made for bodybuilding. Everyone else looked like they were trying to do something they just weren't meant for, compared to Arnold. Look at 0:35. Mentzers small chest big stomach small biceps. Looks like a little goof in comparison. EVERYONE CUT THE CRAP!!!!!! ARNOLD DESERVED TO WIN, IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I often wonder regarding this contest, are people judging Arnold in comparison to the other competitors, or they comparing him to the Arnold of 74 or 75?

He wins former , but loses the latter.

  • 1) mike mentzer 2) frank zane 3)dennis tinerino .......8) arnold

  • Weider forced Arnold to return to compete with the promise of victory, because of the publicity of the movie Conan the barbarian

  • @MrLoripeppe Eveybody knows that Arnold was never forced to do anything period!

  • @ironwarriortributes what a dumbell you are.

weider controlled arnold by contract and did as he was told. and weider made him a star.

because the weider brothers WERE bb in those days....

  • Why no footage of Mike posing? Why just still shots of him?

If you included footage of his routine from the same video where you got the footage of Arnie, you would have clearly displayed how much better Mike was than Arnie that day. There were only 2 Mr. Olympias who were less deserving than Arnie in 1980. They were Chris "I Have No Arms" Dickerson in 1982 and (most especially) Franco "I Have No Legs But A Fine Set Of Bitch Tits" Columbu in 1981. Those 3 years in a row destroyed the Mr. O.

  • spectacular work here warrior! the best tribute i have seen regarding the 1980 mr. olympia!!.. it forces one to be on the fence, arnolds charisma and structure make him stand out. but mike at 2:37 blows them all away, and the vacum shot at 4:40 is beyond description. i could see mike winning it on condition/balance. the other guy who no one ever talks about is roger walker, i had him a solid 3rd!..

  • If Mike weighed 225, only 3 pounds lighter, than Arnold in 75, when he looked bigger than Louie, then either all the weight figures are fake, or Mike had a real heavy mustache in 1980 :)

  • @Banderius79 In which place Mike landed?

  • whats the name of this song please??

    i like it a lott

    thanx

  • I guess you can say that pound per pound Mike Mentzer was the most muscular man there. 5'7" at 225lbs. He was heavier and more rip than when he was in '79.

  • No it was Roger Walker at 235 lbs.!

  • @kwazar11

Dennis Tinerino was also 235lbs. But both of them are much taller than Mike.

So by height to weight ratio that would make Mike bigger.

  • Come on now,Walker is 5'8"-the same as Mentzer!

  • @kwazar11

I'm PMing you some pics of Roger Walker next to Arnold. You'll see that he's more than 5'8".

Boyer Coe is 5'8" and Mentzer real height is 5'7". I'm a short 5'6" and when I met Mike in the early 90's he was like my height. This was before his back surgery.

    Peace

  • Naturalhit,I've seen all that pics and many others where Mike is standing next to Roger, and I have the video from the Olympia(80).And the official statistics about Mentzers and Roger's height shows them both at 5'8".

Anyway, thanks for the link! There are some very attractive pics of some Australian fitness girls;)

  • great song and video, whats the song called??/

  • After a 5 years break with only 8 weeks of training Arnold managed to get a better shape,(not by a mile, but still) than the top bodybuilders ... It must have been a huge embarrasment to them. If Arnold had trained a whole year before this contest, the others wouldn't have shown up at all.

  • @Banderius79

Actually, that's not really true. He had 8 weeks of pre-contest training and diet. But he had been training for Conan for over a year and before that he was also training, but not as serious or dedicated.

  • Arnold weighed 238 in South Africa at the weigh in for the 75 olympia, and he competed at 225 in the 80 olympia. I dont know where this 225 in 75 rumor is coming from, but let me assure you it is false.Watch pumping iron and view the best built 6'2" man on the planet. you will no longer have any doubt in your mind that Arnold weighed wayyyy more than 225 in 75. He stood up against Ferrigno in 75 and pounded him, and he did it weighing nearly 240.

  • best built 6'2" man on the planet Lmao who's that? how about pumping iron VS. HEAVY DUTY! arnold was 225 in 80' period.

  • @swordfishjon Read my post again, I agree completely that arnold weighed 225 in 1980. I also remember seeing footage of Arnold doing straightbar curls with 275 when he was 19. He trained like a powerlifter in the beginning, giving him an incredible base. He probably trained closer to your favored heavy duty method than you think in the early days.

  • @imaluckydickens

Actually he was 231lbs in '75 and 220lbs in '80. Dennis Tinerino told me this in '94 when he was one of the attendee at Nubret Classic. When he and the rest of them were at the weigh in Dennis was actually heavier than Arnold and so was Mentzer.

  • Arnold's height and large frame make him look bigger than the others. But when considering proportional and symmetrical development, he was 'weaker' overall than some of the others. His best features (biceps and chest) are let down by triceps and thighs. Mentzer's back, triceps and thighs were better than Anrold's considering his body size.

  • Why this terrible music???

  • @melkiemelkie Music was clear before I uploaded to youtube if that's what you mean....has to be a youtube thing.

  • By the way,Mike looks great at:3:02,3:05 and 4:38!

  • How slim are Arnold's quads @ 0:29 and 2:49 - and look how high his calves are from the front! If MIke's back was "puffy" it's certainly showing a hell of a lot more detail @ 0:31 and lok at his triceps...0:49 Arnold better in chest and biceps but that's about it. Arnold did however make a tremendous improvement from judging to show in condition.

  • 0:29 is a relaxed quarterturn and Arnold is obviously more relaxed than Mike.Thats why there is no detail on his back.On a back double biceps pose the things changed dramatically and arnold displayed a lot of details.

Mike's triceps was better, but look at the way he keeps his hands!Very smart. That is sort of a pose rather than relax. But what about the calves at 0:29.Arnolds are much bigger.

  • Arnold and Mike were always transposed with calves. Arnold's looked high viewed from the front, huge from the rear - Mike vice versa. Mike chose to position his hands that way to emphasize his tricep size, Arnold's position more on flaring his lats. Also I think Mike's calves were smaller than in Columbus in 79, when they also appeared huge from the rear.

  • I can only agree on that.

  • i still think mikes condition in 79 was his best

  • Wow! This is an excellant video! Of course I don't agree with the winner, but nevertheless, the video was put together very well. Great job!

  • Thank you neil...no doubt the most controversial of all the Olympias besides the 81....but then again there's a lot of Olympias I scratched my head and said "how did that guy win?"

  • @ironwarriortributes

uhhh, 1981 was the worst olympia in history, Franco looked horrible and had bitch tits :(

  • @neilp77 0:33 shows Arnold looking thinner than i think anyone has ever seen him

  • Dickerson was in great shape in 80,back excellent, legs and especially calves excellent, condition excellent.

But arms very poor, chest rounded and torn, shoulders sloping (posing didn't hide it or we wouldn't be talking about it)

Those arms would stop him ever winning, for my money.

  • I would of gave Mike 2nd before Chris D.....You know who 1st Pete(wink) Arnold:P....but I agree on the arms ....Chris was it very good condition but enough for 2nd place....I guess so if Arnold took 1st...oops ok I'll shut up now lmao.

  • Lol if Arnold was 225 in 80 then that makes him 240-245 in 75,which i don't think even his most ardant fan could ever believe.

  • Tell you the truth Pete I would believe 225 in 80 on a 6'1/6'2 frame and maybe 235 in 75. No way 213# the number that keeps popping up in 80.

  • LOL. Too true. Check out the most recent post on Iron Age Forums - 213.

  • If Arnold never entered that contest, the result would have been the same as in 82:

    1.Chris Dickerson

    2.Frank Zane

    -the rest.

  • It may well have been, but for the same reasons as Mike was 5th, political ones not based on physique. Frank did well to catch up after his poolside accident, but he was way, way too small. Chris was very good - Mike's pecs were below par, yes, but what about Chris? Slope shoulders, poor arms, right pec tear etc...

Frank and Chris did not rock the Weider boat.

  • Mike himself was very impressed with Chris's 80 shape.Chris did have pec tear, but his pecs was still much more fuller than Mike's.Sloped shoulders is a bone type and with proper posing isn't a problem.Chris had excellent shoulders(muscles)The only thing Mike had him were the arms.Overall Chris was better, especially in the back.

  • I mean Chris was better in 80,not in general!

  • Sure.

  • Yes, I know Mike frequently said he considered himself, Chris and Coe (for some strange reason) as the main contenders. I'm not sure I agree about the back assertion though, Chris DID have excellent back thickness, but lower back, spinal erectors, Mike was way ahead of him (and everyone else) IMO MIke qiads were also better (a little) as Chris had phenomenal legs, size, fullness, shape. In Mike's case, even on the basis of one weak bodypart, anything lower than 2nd place in Sydney was unjust.

  • Mike did have lower back thickness, but not much details in his middle and lower back. His "christmas tree"lacked definition and looked a bit puffy,he was definetely holding sone water there.Though I agree he should have placed higher,at least ahead of Coe.

  • Legs-Dickerson had the second best pair of legs at the contest(after Tom Platz of course).

  • You wanna troll this thread and be a smart azz you can take it down the road because it's not happening on this channel pal! I like Mike...but I won't tolerate a troll like you...so say goodnight!

  • LMFAO everything is fixed....OMG.....the only reason the video was posted like this was to let people see Arnold was in good enough shape to pull off the Olympia.

  • saw the vid Farshad. black and white has that shading effect also. but cool. this vid here says it all for me though. mroe so than before. just standing next to mike makes mike look like under 200lb class. lets say arnold came in at 223 and say he was 230 in 75. i see the 7 lb diff in the lats and legs and partly in the back.

  • If Arnold weighed 228 in 75,then its obvious he was much lighter in 80,as to how much lighter, who knows.

  • i just say all the pics here than other youtube vids show arnold better, either its the flash, lighting, something. standing in line posed or relaxed. just made me see it more, fan or not, i feal better. sure mike had his moments but over all, sorry dude.

  • If Arnold was only 213 pounds in 1980,Mike would be the first person to announce it to the world, but he never did!

  • No doubt about it Kwazar....Mike would shout it out loud!!!!! Far as I know people are just guessing at Arnolds weight......at 6'1/6'2 213 pounds give me a break I don't know anybody that looks like that roids or not!

  • It all came from an ironage member with hidden personality, who claimed he worked for Arnold(without even mentioning what!)and he(Arnold)told him he was 213 in 80.And many people started to talk how Arnold was 213 instead of the official declared 225,which is ridiculous.

  • If we doubt the official stated weight for Arnold and believe the 213 version,we can also doubt that Mike, who was much shorter and narrower than Arnold, was 225 lbs. as well. For example Phil Heath who is 5'9" was 227 lbs.in2008 and he looks much bigger overall than Mentzer.

  • Great video!.Both Arnold and Mike look good in certain poses.

  • R.I.P mike mentzer. good genetics, excelent body symmetry. your big mike but your not freaky looking... in my heart your the winner!

  • Lighter weight or not Arnold standing next to the competition in the lineup he was still looking good. Good enough to take the Mr O. 2:07 2:36 shows why he won and 3:20 shows a xmas tree with all the trimmings even at 213$ from what people say...highly unlikely he was that light.

  • 213#

  • back decent enough, not like 74 or 75 for that matter.

hamstrings not really, but from the front, his thighs looked just like mikes in all the front shots here.

  • well i'm ready to start pulling, haha

  • come on pete, i see you fighting back the desire to admit arnold looks good. i see you holding back, let it go, be free, come out of the menzter closet. haha. mike has great tri's, standing next to arnold in these better looking photos, i see no evidence of mike deserving to win. relaxed or posing, arnold looks pretty good. a lot better than the other youtube vids.

  • Pete admit Arnold look good oldtimer!!!!! That would be like pulling teeth(wink)

  • yeah, no kidding jesse. i just look at these still color images of them in line and arnold looks pretty good and looks a lot bigger than mike, zane. i wish pete and syner would see this, but they still may not admit. these shots show me more.

  • every color image showing arnold in line with mike posing or not he looks bigger than mike and better. the lighting on this vid is better than others. shows more in arnold's favor. come on pete where are ya!

  • Arnold was in better condition then most people want to give him credit for....when you find clear pictures with better lighting it shows that Arnold may not have been his biggest or most ripped...but he wasn't smooth and out of shape as some suggest.

  • Also if Arnold was 213 pounds at 6'1 or 6'2 whatever you want to believe his height was...That is the biggest 6'1 guy I have ever seen at 213 #

  • I'm still on the fence regarding who should have won. In some pics, Arnold looked good. In others he looked flabby and tired. One thing for sure. Arnold's posing was better than the rest. Maybe that put him over the top.

  • damn, in this lighting arnold looks real good in these color images for this contest, still don't know the gripe about mike, he was way smaller looking next to arnold.
