Awesome. I hope one day to pick up with playing the blues on it. I love my Ukulele. I am guitarist. Now I am learning this one here. I already picked up some good old German folk songs on it. I am German-American. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
ya know my good sir, i am writing a song for the ukulele and in the beginning and end i've made a little alternating thumb picky thing to it as well =P still working on it though. i would however be very glad if you were to view it upon it's completion and give me your opinion
first of all i've seen a few of your videos and i give you my thanks for opening my eyes to the potential of the ukulele, and second of all it looks like you are a pillow playing the ukulele in this video =P and that sir is awesome
I didn't know that others are doing nearly the same thing as I. I've been playing this kind of picking for ages. Last april and june I had the chance to give a workshop on a ukulele meeting and showed how I played my pickings. It's good to discover your stuff. I hope it will spread more...
A german document is available, please send me a message if you want one (I will translate it).
Hey Piers, nice vids! I'm liking the guitar-style-alt-thumb-thing on my uke too. Just wondering why you tune ADF#B ?... I do this too. When I bought the uke I got a book with it for that tuning so that's what I did. Then I found out most folks tune a uke GCEA so I did that. But I've gone back to ADF#B for the uke cos it makes it easier playing along with a guitar in DADF#AD. Anyway, enjoyed the Cube gig! I would've stopped by after but had to go home to the babber! All the best, Chris.
I tune ADF#B because the smaller ukes seem to ring better that way. I've just borrowed a larger Concert Uke which seems happier with standard tuning. Messing about with tuning is part of the fun of playing string instruments for me. Glad you enjoyed the gig - the naked uke player seems to have stuck in people's minds !
Obviously as you're not strumming the first string in this there's be no need to fret the 1st string 2nd fret. But if you were gonna be strumming all four say, would a d in this tuning not be a c in standard?? It'd be a handy rule to know. Cheers piers. p.s more vids pleeeeease - you're ace
Newbie question: So you're tuned up to A,D,F,B right, or something near that .. i notice that the chord you call G is what would normally be F in standard G,C,E,A tuning - does that mean if you tune up one note the chords move up one too - so why wouldn't D be what C is in standard tuning??
its not wrong, its not in standard tuning, if it were then a D chord couldn't be open because a D chord uses D F and A as the "triad" so to speak. if he played the four notes open in standard is would be an A 7 major i beleive? i dont know ukulele chords to well but using root A then C E and G (the seventh) would make a seventh chord. but anyways, ya it should be tuned to D maj judging solely on the fact that a D major is the open chord lol
Thats OK, I'm 60 next year which is definitely Grandfather territory. I hope to make it to the 100th Birthday gig - which should give me another 40 years of musical adventuring. Piers
T_T this doesn't work on my soprano uke. I tried using the chords, then kind of picking them like you did in the video, but apparently I need to tune it to the bari tuning.
gamergator=ukulele noob :)
Great vid by the way, I'm going to use this if I can figure it out.
The first time the 'Furey Brothers' played on top of the pops, Finbar used his Banjo to hide a big coffee stain on his white shirt (the only shirt he had with him!), I hope that's not the case with the cushion!... LOL! ..Nice collection of instructional videos you have on your channel COVEYWOOD, Kudos.....
Very good instruction - I'm confused on a few things - is this a soprano uke (it looks like it) tuned DGBE like a baritone uke? If this is a bari uke, what kind is it? The sound is so beautiful. Thanks for posting!
you sound like David Icke...

not to be nit pickey, but isn't a D on a uke played (2220) not (0000)? this isn't a ukulele is it?

That confused me too but if you scroll down a bit in the comments you'll see he's not using the "standard" GCEA tuning but ADF#B instead. :-)

So let me get this straight the thumb basically bounces of the top two strings in alternation and the forefinger pluck the third finger?
