my bother took his own life how do you get over the guilt you feel b/c i didnt save him he was my baby brother i always protected him but Lord help me i coulnt save him im drowning here in everything i can get my hands on alcohol pills taking abuse i would never have taken b4 GUILT its killing me literally
@stefanieacord Guilt is a bitch. You say "Lord help me". That right there may be your glitch. Take the pills, drink, find your peace but understand that belief in a deity is the human downfall across the board and the "Lord" will never help you. It is simply the belief that there is a god that gives hope but as you know deep down, that is a false hope. Believe in you. As Jason Molina says, "be your own god" We all feel a darkness and a false god can't shine a light on you...It wasn't your fault.
@mjlorange1 The thought of light is a light. The prayer for grace is a grace. Does it matter if there's anyone listening? "Be your god" is fine. But you can also create your own god. And root it in what is most real. This moment. All that is given to you. The loves, the friendships, the mystery of shared experiences. Slow mornings after parties, recollecting your place in the grand real. All of that is God. Who are we to say that it isn't? We are here, if anything, to say that it is.
@stefanieacord He wouldn't want you to punish yourself, stefanie. The best you can do is try to learn from this, to honor the connections you have with friends and family. It takes many incarnations to learn these lessons. Life is hard. Mistakes are what life is made of; because life is precious, and something so precious is always breaking. But this moment is still precious, and everyone in your life loves you.
@stefanieacord stefanie, there was nothing you could have done. truly. do not feel guilty. none of this is your fault. and you have to accept that before you even start to move on... and you will move on...and you will make it!
This is one of the heaviest songs i have ever heard.. The first time i heard it was Johny Cash's version and it stopped me in my tracks.. but this is insane, so haunting and the vocal delivery sounds like the narrator is really going through it.. the vulnerability in his voice etc.. its brilliant work.
It is human mans perception, that I have been sneaking up on him... so let he that runs continue to run, and he that receives me continue to receive... to them who see me coming, I am a terror and a hope. To the one who is at works of mind and heart, from this one do I steal back what is mine, and leave the human flesh abandoned as a swaddling cloth.
just makes me think on my boyfriend. we shared special moments with this song and we fight so much but we love us so much too i dont know... it is hard to realize how much harm can you make to people you love

I am sorry for your friend.... I have a destruction of my life now, but I dont want to leave this life, there will come beautiful times too...the music helps to find the way back...
Wow. After reading it's dedicated to someone who's committed suicide, I'm crying. This song is the desperation of someone like that, on the edge, calling out for attention but either too scared or too stubborn to ask. Who loves parts of life but the depression just consumes them. And then the people around them wonder, "should I have known? Could I have stopped it?"
My close friend and brother-in-law died recently and this was one of his favourite songs. He went to see Bonnie Prince Billy live a few times. Wish I'd gone with him now.
music is an arbitrary and deeply personal experience that cannot be defined with a sense of rightgeous judgement upon other listereners, it is what we interperet it to be...so either kill yourself or maybe teach a crack squirell how to slam dance to beethoven
I listened to this song the other day when I was really, really depressed and I literally had to stop listening to because it was making me feeling contemplate suicide more rationally than before. No hyperbole here. This song is dangerous for me...I love it, but I can't listen to it very often.
Best descriptor of depression both lyrically and musically that I'ver heard; so much that it makes it uplifting and positive... you've done your job. Great musician and composer.
Chuck Norris listens to this song and realizes who he is a little more than before he heard it. He can also kill people before they are born. So at least he has that going for him.
I like this version but I personally like Johnny Cash's version better. I found Johnny Cash's version (with his deeper voice) to better utilise the gravity of the song. Bonnie Prince Billy did a great job on the lyrics though.
I know where you're coming from. I recently got out of rehab and while I was there the line "pull the smile inside" kept playing in my head. I couldn't bring any music there, but the memory of this song pulled me through when I felt alone in that place. And I am completely grateful for that whole experience.
meesoolee . . . I am so sorry your friend took his own life . . . I have wrestled with depression my whole life . . . my earliest memories are of wanting to be dead . . . I came very close to taking my own life when I was 16 . . . but I became a Christian instead . . . saved my life in every way. I am not a practicing Christian anymore . . . I suppose the foundation is still there . . . but not practicing. I wish your friend could have known that things do get better . . . peace
Yeah, this version kills the Cash cover in every way, probably because Will Oldham is on of the greatest Contemporary Folk musicians ever. I love and Respect Johnny Cash, he was great, but even he didn't approach Oldham in terms of talent and vision, almost no one does.
i was looking over the stern of a ferry, watching the water being churned up by the motor while it was idling in the dock. then i tilted up to the horizon (catching a seagull). i recorded the footage using one of the in-camera "special effects" -- so the negative and positive are reversed. i might have also screwed around with the white balance, i'm not sure. the footage was slowed down to match the tempo of the song.
Beautiful, beautiful song. I only discovered it recently when it was featured on the Last Days Of Kurt Cobain documentary & can't get it out of my head now. I'm currently going through a severe episode of depression & i now find this song is up there with the very best of REM's more sombre reflective songs for making you realise you're not alone in your self absorbed thoughts of hopelessness & despair. Certain music can be such a savoir at a time you really need it.
Tonight I heard the sad news of the death by suicide of the sister of my dear friend and colleague. This song fits the mood of sombre sadness I feel for the loss of a young daughter, wife, mother, friend. I pray she is at peace.

Tonight I heard the sad news of the death by suicide of the sister of my dear friend and colleague. This song fits the mood of sombre sadness I feel for the loss of a young daughter, wife, mother, friend. I pray she is at peace.

I've been through the same experience.
Doesn't get easier with time.
The memories just fade away.
