  • Chills...Every... Fucking... Time...

  • if you dislike this you can fuck a elderly male dog till the end of fucking matter

  • I think that if they did it, biffy clyro could do a pretty good cover of this if they tried

  • @IDanClarkI Simon Neil actually did cover it in America when he played a solo show due to the other two not being able to make it.

  • This is a devastatingly beautiful tribute.

    All the best to you.

  • TL;DL

  • One of his best songs, but again there are so many!

Looking for Bonnie Billy fans across the world to share passion for the Great Man's music - Look for me on Facebook, I'm: "Arise Therefore".

  • I saw bpb in Western MA with my gf a few short weeks before she died - this song will always eat me up

  • one of my favourite songs on earth...it song proves everyone is human, it almost makes me cry a bit, haha. thanks for the video, i know your friend appreciates it.

  • This brought a tear to my eye. Very nice of you to make this for your friend.

  • If I go I'm going, as long as this song keeps going.

  • Hearing this, you could go from the happiest person in the world, to a coldhearted cynics... Seeing all the darkness in this world.

  • we love will oldham, we did a cover, let us know what you think? watch?v=GfmZ7vbJFfU or over on sandalwood.ie. trying to choose what song to do next - any suggestions? :-)

  • some songs just touch so deep ...and this is one of them !

  • god this is such a good song, and so sad , feel myse;f welling up, and im quite hard hearted too, i am human this song proves it

  • brilliant video.

  • @JaiYen1287 Me too, a year or so ago. It fucked me up. But it was the most beautiful thing I'd heard in awhile.

  • awwww this song is legend, first time i heard this was last night and it was simon neil of biffy clyro singing it, but come on this is great

  • 10 people should hang themselves ...

  • @krme1974

    only 10?

  • @krme1974 ten people have an opinion and you should respect that

  • rip cale..i'll always think of you when i hear this song.

  • LOL WHY THERE ARE SO MUCH BUTTHURT BITCHES IN THIS THREAD?

  • my bother took his own life how do you get over the guilt you feel b/c i didnt save him he was my baby brother i always protected him but Lord help me i coulnt save him im drowning here in everything i can get my hands on alcohol pills taking abuse i would never have taken b4 GUILT its killing me literally

  • @stefanieacord Guilt is a bitch. You say "Lord help me". That right there may be your glitch. Take the pills, drink, find your peace but understand that belief in a deity is the human downfall across the board and the "Lord" will never help you. It is simply the belief that there is a god that gives hope but as you know deep down, that is a false hope. Believe in you. As Jason Molina says, "be your own god" We all feel a darkness and a false god can't shine a light on you...It wasn't your fault.

  • @mjlorange1 The thought of light is a light. The prayer for grace is a grace. Does it matter if there's anyone listening? "Be your god" is fine. But you can also create your own god. And root it in what is most real. This moment. All that is given to you. The loves, the friendships, the mystery of shared experiences. Slow mornings after parties, recollecting your place in the grand real. All of that is God. Who are we to say that it isn't? We are here, if anything, to say that it is.

  • @stefanieacord LOLEST OF LOLS

  • @juanmacome Troll harder

  • @stefanieacord He wouldn't want you to punish yourself, stefanie. The best you can do is try to learn from this, to honor the connections you have with friends and family. It takes many incarnations to learn these lessons. Life is hard. Mistakes are what life is made of; because life is precious, and something so precious is always breaking. But this moment is still precious, and everyone in your life loves you.

  • @stefanieacord God bless you....

  • @stefanieacord stefanie, there was nothing you could have done. truly. do not feel guilty. none of this is your fault. and you have to accept that before you even start to move on... and you will move on...and you will make it!

  • @stefanieacord rock on

  • 2:01 una ave?

  • does anyone know the name of the visual effect used in the video? I've always admired it.

  • This is one of the heaviest songs i have ever heard.. The first time i heard it was Johny Cash's version and it stopped me in my tracks.. but this is insane, so haunting and the vocal delivery sounds like the narrator is really going through it.. the vulnerability in his voice etc.. its brilliant work.

  • It is human mans perception, that I have been sneaking up on him... so let he that runs continue to run, and he that receives me continue to receive... to them who see me coming, I am a terror and a hope. To the one who is at works of mind and heart, from this one do I steal back what is mine, and leave the human flesh abandoned as a swaddling cloth.

My garment is as the sun upon water.

  • The most wonderful song about friends I have ever heard. Really.

  • that's such an amazing version. I love Jonhhy Cash, but that is also unique too. Really cool visuals too which is a bonus :) all good in the hood

  • just makes me think on my boyfriend. we shared special moments with this song and we fight so much but we love us so much too i dont know... it is hard to realize how much harm can you make to people you love

  • looks like [kurt cobain] voice!? how you think people?

  • @washproof1 you were just listening to Nirvana too much

  • @washproof1

no, it doesn't sound like kurt cobain at all :-p grovega is probably right, you listened to nirvana too much :-)

that's not a bad thing, i also listen too much to nirvana :-p

  • @WwotEvarr :D no, I,am talking seriosly, when first time i heart this song , sink its kurt./ maybe you right, / but whay when bonnie prince sings this in LIVE, voice is diferrent, not the same!?

  • Great song. It was a favorite of my best friend. He passed away recently and I basically have this song in my head every day.

  • @Zuhzuhzombie

I hear that, when a friend passed away this was a song I found to deal with the pain... as I listen to it now I think of her

  • This song made me think about life.

  • The world's greatest songwriter, nobody can pen a song like Will.

  • Oh nevermind. Ffs, how did I know realize that?

  • @magicgyspy Is that some joke that I just don't get?

  • looks a lot like blood in a bathtub at first, except then i realised that that much blood would have made the water too cloudy to see

  • strangely enough when my friend Butch killed himself I immediately thought of this song.

  • what a fuckin song

  • loveit

  • Best cover of this song ever. So good it's shattering. <3 BPP/WO

  • @hollyspry

cover ? It´s the original. Will Oldham wrote this song. Johnny Cash covered it.

  • I don't know if it's a compliment, but I want this song on my funeral

  • i used to play this everyday from the age of 13-15 on my wwalkman i think it had an effect

  • This is shattering!

  • i listen to this song to remind me of a friend who took his own life :(

  • dude im 15 years old and my dad got me into all this kinda stuff and i think it really

iz the shit, sad my youths music is all about t-pain and akon when this is the stuff

that really get underneath your skin and effects you internaly. if you havent heard of it, check out still waters by Jim White and Bon Iver, for emma foreva

  • what a fucking song, man. oldham rules...he just fucking rules the universe.

  • I am sorry for your friend.... I have a destruction of my life now, but I dont want to leave this life, there will come beautiful times too...the music helps to find the way back...

  • fucking amazing video. Looks like the surface of the sun.

  • Well put, kmacmuzikmafia27.

  • yeah he wrote this amazing song, cash did a great cover of it too

  • Wow. After reading it's dedicated to someone who's committed suicide, I'm crying. This song is the desperation of someone like that, on the edge, calling out for attention but either too scared or too stubborn to ask. Who loves parts of life but the depression just consumes them. And then the people around them wonder, "should I have known? Could I have stopped it?"

  • I love this version. Johnny Cash is legendary but you can't beat this in my opinion :)

The words and emotions are just overcoming.

  • I think I like Cash's version better. Idk though its a tough choice. I just really love when Will comes in and sings with him at the end.

  • bonnie writes the best songs!

  • I pretty sure this is the original, Cash did the cover.

  • That's what i meant

  • Cash did amazing covers.

  • Just watch to the end, u will see... a darkness?

  • I think it's a waterfall from underwater with a red filter

  • My close friend and brother-in-law died recently and this was one of his favourite songs. He went to see Bonnie Prince Billy live a few times. Wish I'd gone with him now.

    Thanks for the video post.

  • @kuyperfoundation Sorry to hear that, don't put anything off.

  • At 2:01, a bird flies across the top of the screen, past the blood tainted looking water. Quite nice.

  • i don`t get the visual.

    blood or volcano?

  • I think none of the two.

  • i don't think a name like that deserves -6 thumbs regardless of what you said.

  • Hope, as the distant surface from the view at the bottom, can be staggeringly sad.

  • no one misses the point of a song, you take from it what you will. Besides, hope can be sad.

  • well that's too bad it makes you contemplate suicide...this song is about hope..

  • music is an arbitrary and deeply personal experience that cannot be defined with a sense of rightgeous judgement upon other listereners, it is what we interperet it to be...so either kill yourself or maybe teach a crack squirell how to slam dance to beethoven

  • profound johnny

  • @Johnnyzerlina Best comment ever !!!

  • @Johnnyzerlina You're not even funny. Shutup.

  • @Johnnyzerlina Too bad most of us don't listen to reviewers who can't spell / don't bother to proof their opinions.

  • who wrote this song?

  • google Will Oldham, Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace, Palace Brothers. Basically the same guy.

    Peace :)

  • It's very sombre and I like it.

I also like this visual interpretation..

    It's very simple and creative.

I admire this video. Thanks for posting.

    I'm sorry about your friend.

    S.

  • i kinda like the cash version better, but this is good to

  • rip Cale

  • such a great song, and the johnny cash version is sooo bad, so boring. but everyone pretends to love it, its johnny cash, come on...

  • catch me respond to the johnny cash one its like having scarlett johanson doin tom waits.

  • Do you happen to know what the reason was behind Bonnie Prince Billy's "Exit Music (For a Dick)"... was this some sort of slam on Radiohead?

  • it´s so wonderful....... best performance ever

  • Rest in peace Cymro, rest in peace.

  • thanks so much for uploading this! :)

  • love it!

  • I listened to this song the other day when I was really, really depressed and I literally had to stop listening to because it was making me feeling contemplate suicide more rationally than before. No hyperbole here. This song is dangerous for me...I love it, but I can't listen to it very often.

  • Nope.

Twenty-four years old. Take your trolling elsewhere, shithead.

  • Is the Chuck Norris line you guys are qouting from the Walker Texas Ranger Chuck Norris?

Anyway, I love this song, just moves me.

  • Best descriptor of depression both lyrically and musically that I'ver heard; so much that it makes it uplifting and positive... you've done your job. Great musician and composer.

  • Best descriptor of depression and associated rubbish I've experienced; a non-poetic response to a poetic and musical masterpiece

  • this song helped me when i needed i was hurting so much"in the darkness shines the brightest light"-c.norris

  • and did you know how much I love you?

  • words cant express how much i love this song.

  • Beautiful.

  • In the darkness shines the brightest light.

    Chuck Norris - 09/1876

  • Amazing song, gives me chills every time.

  • beautiful as all of his work is.

  • Your sentence makes no sense.

  • This song is amazing. Im sorry about your friend =(

  • Beatiful song and touching sentement

  • <3 :(

  • Beautiful video

  • Bonnie Prince Billy - 4tw!

Way better than Johnny Cash :)

  • what is this video from?

    its really cool....

and this song reminds me of my grandma so i may never listen to this again ://

  • I like this version but I personally like Johnny Cash's version better. I found Johnny Cash's version (with his deeper voice) to better utilise the gravity of the song. Bonnie Prince Billy did a great job on the lyrics though.

  • This song saved my life.

  • how :l

  • Well, it saved me from depression which could have easily lead me to end my own life.

  • god bless.

  • Wow wow wow, sinxc0re, you are just too dark for this video. no one can handle you here, you'll beat us up and stuff.

  • I know where you're coming from. I recently got out of rehab and while I was there the line "pull the smile inside" kept playing in my head. I couldn't bring any music there, but the memory of this song pulled me through when I felt alone in that place. And I am completely grateful for that whole experience.

  • may i ask how?

  • Pitchfork top 9 album of the 90:s, and I understand why!!

  • i love this song!!

  • meesoolee . . . I am so sorry your friend took his own life . . . I have wrestled with depression my whole life . . . my earliest memories are of wanting to be dead . . . I came very close to taking my own life when I was 16 . . . but I became a Christian instead . . . saved my life in every way. I am not a practicing Christian anymore . . . I suppose the foundation is still there . . . but not practicing. I wish your friend could have known that things do get better . . . peace

  • Excellent Song.

  • this song's as perfect as elliott smith's twilight. most touching song i heard for a long time.

  • Yeah, this version kills the Cash cover in every way, probably because Will Oldham is on of the greatest Contemporary Folk musicians ever. I love and Respect Johnny Cash, he was great, but even he didn't approach Oldham in terms of talent and vision, almost no one does.

  • this song is travelling me..

    far away from my life..

    i love it..(L)

    Perfect!!!

  • wow

  • wil oldham wrote it.

  • I see the darkness. Bless you my friend. we see the darkness. amen, all love for you and everybody.

  • this is beautiful.

  • yes, it is. thankyou for not being banal about it.

  • Awesome song.

  • i think its better then john cash with all respect to him.

  • will oldham wrote this song. I'm sure he was honored that the man in black wanted to cover it.

  • great

  • the song is awesome

and it fits perfectly with the video. genius idea

  • what is the background visual?

  • i was looking over the stern of a ferry, watching the water being churned up by the motor while it was idling in the dock. then i tilted up to the horizon (catching a seagull). i recorded the footage using one of the in-camera "special effects" -- so the negative and positive are reversed. i might have also screwed around with the white balance, i'm not sure. the footage was slowed down to match the tempo of the song.

  • very well done. I like the lava/fire effect that you gave to the water.

  • i was thinkin' blood too

  • @meesoolee Beautiful effect for a great song.

  • beautiful

  • One of the best.

  • Remember, you are not alone. Remember. You are loved. I love you.

  • Beautiful, beautiful song. I only discovered it recently when it was featured on the Last Days Of Kurt Cobain documentary & can't get it out of my head now. I'm currently going through a severe episode of depression & i now find this song is up there with the very best of REM's more sombre reflective songs for making you realise you're not alone in your self absorbed thoughts of hopelessness & despair. Certain music can be such a savoir at a time you really need it.

  • i hope you get through it. everyone's on your side!

    all the best

  • Tonight I heard the sad news of the death by suicide of the sister of my dear friend and colleague. This song fits the mood of sombre sadness I feel for the loss of a young daughter, wife, mother, friend. I pray she is at peace.

  • Beautifully pensive. Much best, Alles Gutes.

  • this is the song my friend played full blast in his room just before he killed himself, R.I.P Jack x

  • my condolences but i think he missed the point of the song

  • .... wunderschön... :-)

    beste güße...

    oldoldraven

  • I know how you feel man.

I've been through the same experience.

    Doesn't get easier with time.

    The memories just fade away.

    best of luck to you.

  • A true song. Nice vid

  • Rip for your friend.

Beatiful song, describes depression in a nice way..

  • love this song,CLASSIC.all us humans feel pain, and for me this is the sound track of our times.lol.

  • Such a sad tune, but so many positive vibes it creates! Nice video treatment.

  • Beautifully sad.
