This is one of the heaviest songs i have ever heard.. The first time i heard it was Johny Cash's version and it stopped me in my tracks.. but this is insane, so haunting and the vocal delivery sounds like the narrator is really going through it.. the vulnerability in his voice etc.. its brilliant work.

Wow. After reading it's dedicated to someone who's committed suicide, I'm crying. This song is the desperation of someone like that, on the edge, calling out for attention but either too scared or too stubborn to ask. Who loves parts of life but the depression just consumes them. And then the people around them wonder, "should I have known? Could I have stopped it?"

i was looking over the stern of a ferry, watching the water being churned up by the motor while it was idling in the dock. then i tilted up to the horizon (catching a seagull). i recorded the footage using one of the in-camera "special effects" -- so the negative and positive are reversed. i might have also screwed around with the white balance, i'm not sure. the footage was slowed down to match the tempo of the song.

I'm currently going through a severe episode of depression & i now find this song is up there with the very best of REM's more sombre reflective songs for making you realise you're not alone in your self absorbed thoughts of hopelessness & despair.
