I have huge dreams of becoming a vet.. I'm going to give it my all i'll be a freshman In highschool this September and I'm going to start working towards it to accomplish my dreams :)
@vetwannabelovemycat Hey, just a quick bit of advice for you. Make sure you get a job or volunteer with a veterinarian. When I was in high school, I was a volunteer at ADOPT(Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment) for 3 years, but when you're competing for vet school, a letter of recommendation from a veterinarian will be very helpful. I'm currently a junior in animal sciences with a focus on pre-veterinary medicine at UIUC.
@GothicTrioOfEdwards This video is only one part of a series of videos. We've got more info on our site, including a document called "Veterinary School Admissions 101" that has more info. If you type in "101" in the search box on our site, the document should be the first search result.
@vetwannabelovemycat You don't necessarily need to go for 4 years and a degree isn't required, but most people get a BS degree before vet school. You do, however, have to complete the prerequisite courses. You can also get more info by going to the AVMA website and type "101" into the search box - check out our "Vet School Admissions 101" document. (can't link it here - YouTube won't let us link it in a comment.
can someone please clear something up for me? so u have to go to a pre vet college before u go to Veterinarian College, is this correct? i would like to get all this strait as I am graduating high school next year
You don't have to go to a specific "pre vet" college, but there are certain classes you have to take at a college or university to prepare you for veterinary school.
I am really unhappy with the business classes I'm taking. So I'm contemplating about trying what I always wanted to do: be a vet. I have been skeptical because of grades and I never had a strong science background. Would you say it is possible to be admitted to a vet school even with an average GPA, such as a 3.0?
@Morgan0763 It's possible, but it will be a bigger challenge. You definitely need the prerequisite courses, or there's no chance. You can help make up for a 'less-than-ideal' GPA by getting good animal and vet experience, communications skills, and leadership skills. YouTube won't let us post a link in the comments, but if you go to our site and type "101" in the search box, it will take you to a resource that may help. Good luck!
@1brandonfan I was advised in college to do a double major of pre-vet med and biology, since I only needed to add in a few more classes to get the bio degree. On the chance that you don't make it into vet school, the biology degree opens doors to other career paths and masters programs. My college did away with the pre-vet major because students who didn't get into vet school were having trouble finding other options. It's very competitive, and it doesn't hurt to have a back up plan.
i wanted to be a vet so bad since the first time I saw a dog and I am only 11 but I cant get mi mom to help me get to talk to a vet and see if I can go to a clinic and watch the vets for a day because she sed you have to be able to drive to volunteer I started taking a downloadable course but mi computer broke and I cant find it now
Hey kids, I'm a Pre-vet student I'm 20 years old and let me tell you guys better like sceince and math cause you'll be seeing ALOT of it. I've been dreaming to become a vet and I hope you guys fallow your dream
