What I remember hanging out at the clubs is watching hartman, sitting on a stool, smokey-filled room, cigarette-in-hand, singing the most glorious music i had ever heard. it's a tragedy the cig's killed him. loved and missed...
This is my favourite jazz piece. I am hugely passionated with John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra; but only this piece can make me tremble, or can give me lots of goosebumps, or a huge thrill on my spine.
Thank you, Titopuentelives; I appreciated the description you gave for the piece.
Tito, just now i knew the singer's real name; one of my sons gave me the great notice that the record was posted by You, sir, in YouTube. Before i believed the singer was Joe Williams -another jazz giant -.¡Thanks a lot! and please, do excuse my wild english.
Was about 21 when I was introduced to this glorious music. am turning 54 this year and oooh, the song is still so magical. Coltrane does an amazing solo that takkes your breath away. Thank you for an excellent upload.
I have the original on 33 vinyl and is one of the reasons I started my life long love of jazz when I purchased the ‘Ballads” album which not what I see here. This is a re-release of the song. That is when it first was released as part of the John Coltrane release with Mr. Hartman singing only a few songs on the two albums (same song though). A classic rendition my favorite of all time, this version with the two maestros - thaks for posting this
@caemerson23 Yeah this is the only date with a singer where Coltrane was the leader, but Coltrane in the early '50's played alto (Johnny Griffin was the other alto) in billy Eckstine's Big Band.
Had one of my most powerful ,passionate, romantic, love affairs dancing in a studio to this song. The entire album flowed like water over a rock into a emerald pool of intoxicating emotions. A true classic. Bless your heart for posting this and for the bittersweet memories of a past affair long, long ago. Grace and peace!
This is my favorite vocal album. Thanks for posting, the whole planet should listen to this. Hartman has been very underrated, he is "The Real Voice".
Is it a bad thing I prefer this over Ol' Blue Eyes' version? If it is I really don't give a fuck, this is absolutely sublime, perfection.

coltrane's solo on this is so intense but also restrained at the same time. i want to hear the first phrase he plays over and over again.

I used to play just the piano solo as a 'blindfold test' for my friends and virtually no one could identify McCoy Tyner.

One of the truly great Jazz vocalists. And Coltrane? Words fail me.
