Sure, there's quite a lot that an artist can do with someone's song (after he gets the rights, the permission and the original artist gets paid which isn't the case here). Changing the lyrics and pretending it's your song is not a "cover". The performance, the song itself, all good. Stealing, not good.

Here is another example of blatant illegal behavior: my daughter received a book that her uncle gave her and said his friend wrote. She started to read it and said, this book is exactly like another book I just read. We compared them side-by-side and it turns out this fellow took another author's books and rewrote them almost exactly, but with a different title and his name as author. He "self published"...

Shoot, if you even want to play an old movie for free to an audience of school kids, or if you want to use a song in a high school play, you have to receive permission and pay licensing fees through ASCAP. Frank's blatant public posting on YouTube without following the laws and licensing rights was just asking for trouble. Duh!

Actually no. He did not release his version on iTunes nor on the record store shelves so he is not making any money off it. Therefore he does not need to ask any permission and/or license. Frank actually sings beautifully on this, I am not downplaying The Eagles' impact on music but the singing is not on par with Frank's. The Eagles should be happy with this version, because of it a lot of kids know them. Suing a new artist to finally get media attention again is just sad.

Well, IMO making a song better with great lyrics and even better singing is not theft BUT if you must call it that, it is a beautiful theft, like Ocean's Eleven. And you are correct about my admiration for Frank's version, I love it very much indeed and it really connects with me and after all thats the most important thing in music.

I do ask you to do me one favor even if you do not know me, when Frank's debut is released, give it a listen. I am sure it will not disappoint.
