Hey Veri could you ask Nutn what is the difference between the Quark 123² S2 Edition and the Quark 123², R5 Edition. I really like them and am looking into buying one or the other... Thanks in advace
i have the Mini AA S2 version which i think its high mode is only 70 lumens. but was wondering if anyone knew i i could still run the 14500 rechargeable cells in the S2 version?
@marshall3win ....if the xp-g r5 can run it then a xp-g s2 can too, just be carefull how hot you let it get,i have heard people who use it on turbo till the battery drains, there are some concerns all that heat will shorten the LED'S life span, but by how much who know's? if you use it outside in the winter, should be no problem..
or just use a 14500 and your quark on medium, which will be like high on a alkaline, and just use high when you want that major boost in lumens for a brief period!
@marshall3win cool!! i just ordered a mini from 4sevens,i hear they put out over 250 lumens on a 14500,
also a nitecore d11 goes into super overdrive with a 14500 cell,as well as a quark aa regular size, which is what i have right now...anyway keep a eye on the heat thing and enjoy!!
I just wanted to add that after several months of using the 14500 (protected) in my mini AA it's still going strong. No voltage issues. They have since released the mini AA2 which runs 3 Volts safely on exactly the same emitter head (interchangeable), so 3.7 to 4 volts initially with the 14500 is not an issue. I suggest just for safety and longevity's sake not leaving it running on full power for extended periods of time using the 14500's, just due to heat build-up. Other than that, rock on!
I just tried this. I've owned the Mini AA for some time and have been real happy with it. Now I'm completely amped (so to speak)!! Results = Phenomenal. Many thanks for the info! Love enhancements to existing equipment. I purchased the battery on 4sevens.com ($12 per battery). Now I have to buy a charger, so it adds up to about $75 for light, battery, charger, when said and done. I do worry it can blow the light (even though not supposed to with IC), but feel benefit is worth the risk.
I wonder what my quark mileage will be? i mean in essence you are increasing the voltage but at what cost? what would you say 1-2 min on and 4min on cool down. Im guessing if you ran it for 5min full blast you might start cookin the solider off the circuit board and cook your light...???
If the manufacture says it is alright (like with the Quark mini AA) you prob. be ok in using the higher voltage of the 14500.
There are many cases of people (myself included) who have run li-ions successfully in even smaller light for longer times (10440 Li-ion in an AAA light). Of course it is your own responsibility: If a light gets to hot to hold it would be unwise to leave it on.
A 1:55 minute video?? Had to check and make sure I was on the Nutnfancy channel. That looks like an awesome light, but the 4Sevens site says 66 lumens, not 260 lumens. Why the discrepancy?
@boravw1 Nope, their nominal voltage is 3.6 to 3.7 volts, and when freshly charged they test at 4.0 to 4.2 volts, but that very quickly drops to 3.x, and then remains in the 3's for the duration of the battery's capacity. The mini emitter head circuitry can handle it... Heat build up can be an issue if it is just left on full power as they don't have the level of heat dissipation that the standard Quarks have.
after seeing your testing on these lights. I had to pick one up. I bought the Quark MiNi 123, S2 Edition to replace my heavy 6p enhanced. I have it on a beaner now how do you attached yours? when I can save so up some bucks I plan on getting either the bushmaster patrolman or an arsenal stamped AK
Quark flashlights rock! I picked up a mini CR123 based on Nutnfancy's recent review and was absolutely blown away by the performance of this little unit...worth every penny.
My only argument is the test is using snow as a background. Snow is like millions of prisms. I would like to see this test on wet grass in an urban area
this feels to me like simply an ad, not much of an equiptment review..... submerge it, leave it on to show battery life, toss it against a rock to test toughness, leave it overnight in the snow, stuff that may actually happen in a survival situation.... but to just promote it without a thurough review feels like a paid gig to me !!!
@canUceeme2 Been done already....check the other reviews before you bash the second part ot a great review. He has extensive testing with the Mini series of lights including dropping them off overpasses and they just keep ticking. Just do a little research next time!!!
@canUceeme2 should have included a link to the testing stages in the video... My fault for not checking, but a link would have been a great addon to this video... the light is a nice one I can see.. will pick one up for my B.O.B. !!!

You really can't appreciate the work that goes into "the making" of these excellent videos until you have done a couple. I got a mini AA a few days ago and love it. I carry a light everyday and this thing is well beyond what I require of it. I think it will be replacing a bunch of my other lights for camping, car, and pack lights. The weight/runtime/size are pretty amazing, plus the different modes!!
Very nice.... can't go wrong with a 4sevens. So Nutn....... what do you think about the new Maglite XL100? I saw Sooch00 do a review on the XL50 but the XL100 is shock resistant I guess so maybe a better choice if you gonna use it for a weapon light.
I have a mini CR2 thats smaller and brighter, but I love the AA format. Cheap and easy to find. I see on their website they just lowered the lumen ratings on some of the lights for some reason
@matt4270 The new lumen ratings are now being regulated by ANSI. This is the reason for the new ratings. You will see ANSI lumens now instead of OTF Lumens. ANSI will now allow a apples to apples comparison of brand vs brand. Still have the same output, just using a different testing standard....better for the consumer.
@V3RNIM Testing standards are now Regulated by ANSI. The S2 emitter is 7% brighter than the R5, but they are now using a new testing standard so you will see the lower ratings. The ANSI testing will allow apples to apples when comparing brand vs brand.
@PFIDude Thanks man, it was a little confusing seeing that the new Emitters have lower lumen ratings that the older ones. Now it makes sense. I wonder though what the R5 would be when put against the new standards?
I know aa is the form factor, but imo something like a 14500 isn't a "standard" aa cell at all. Even single-use lithiums are more common as you can buy them at pretty much any store.
Even protected I'd be careful running that in anything above freezing temps. The low temps actually will keep that relatively small-heat-sinked light from frying (the emitter). A really hot day in summer might see that light gone for good in seconds.
I bought my dad a surefire g2x tactical light for Christmas. 200 surefire (underated) lumens for $57 otd at my local gun store. It was very comparable to my fenix ta21, probably better. You should get some of these in the project.
Another good light I bought a Fenix TK15 to put on my AR puts out 337 lumes. It's not bad on weight but they r coming out with the PD31 and I think it throws 307 lumens on turbo and it's really light. Anyway love what u do nutn u have turned me on to some great products, aimpoint CompML3, Fenix, o and thank u very much for the 15% off on evil Roy steel targets. Keep doing u dude.
I am SOOOO disappointed!!! I saw a new Nutnfancy video, made cup of coffee to enjoy while I sat and watched it.....and its under two minutes?!? What the....?!? Nutn you feelin' okay buddy?
Firearmspro guys lights for less, the fenix ld10 is also a great option, check PFIdudes channel for links to his website awesome deals and super fast shipping, don't quote me but I think they are running a TNP discount on lights check it out.
Something does not compute. You say 260 lumens, when 4sevens says 66 lumens on regular cells? 4sevens says 1.5v max in the Mini AA, but these 14500s cranks 4.2v?
@K4LA55 4Sevens only posts the specs (lumen ratings now revised to be more accurate...ANSI style I believe) of approved power cells. The 14500 is not approved officially for the reasons noted in sidebar description. 260 Lumens is the best info I could gather; may be more or less but it's close and it's extremely bright.
I have run Li-ions in AA lights for many years now.
these 14500 batteries are inexpensive and will work surprisingly good in lower temperatures. I have them mounted on bikes outside in snow and ice 24/7 and no problems. also travel with these AA lights are handy : you can find normal AA's locally. If you are a novice DON"T use unprotected Li-ion batteries!!! In case of a short-circuit it prob. will lead to an explosion. Also separate the normal AA's from your Li-ion rechargeables
@gimepepe I am thinking of getting a Quark MiNi AA Flashlight for pocket (or neck) carry and a Quark MiNi AA² Flashlight for my work pack. The larger light is good since I often have to lend my light to my young students and they are not always so coordinated. Most 4Seven lights are made for using 2xlithium cells (like the 123² lights). Could I use the 2x14500 cells in the AA²? Then I only need one type of cell with me.
@XCritonX You cannot use two 14500 batteries in a Quark MiNi AA² it will be way over (8,4V) the maximum voltage of 4,2V. The 123² are produced to take a max of 9V (but the min voltage is also higher).
If you insist on having maximum brightness and only one type of cell, you can use one 14500 and a "dummy cell"in your MiNi AA²
dammit dude, I already have the Mini123 from your initial vid, now this is gonna gnaw at me... 4 x 4Sevens lights and 1 on the way and it's ALL YOUR FAULT ;-)
Doesn't a 16340 cell have a higher power density than a 14500 cell? and if so would give you better run times in a lighter weight and smaller size (cr123) package? If you plan on running liIon cells (voids warranty either way) I recommend the quark mini cr123.
@therealcarbine15 In the real world, 14500 have greater capacity than 16340.
and the QMini AA allows for regular lithium Energizer L91 'ultimate' (and their cheaper cousin EA91 'advanced'), a cr123 in the AA form factor (titanium innovations crAA 14505) which makes the output of the QMini AA match the QMini cr123, and then 'overdrive' with 14500's!
I'd only use ICR/IMR 14500 in the winter, use IFR LiFePO4 14500 the rest of the year.
extreme versatility, and AA means 'always available'
Cheers for the update Nutn' thats a big jump in lumnes! i thought they were pretty good with stock batteries.. now seeing this i might have to get me one =] take care brother.
Nutnfancy, I went to the 4sevens website and they didn't show a Quark mini AA with over 200 lumens. Is there a special model number? Many thanks and keep it up.
@EnduringEagle it gets over 200 lumens if you use the Li-ion AA 14500 batteries, there isnt a particular quark that puts out 200 lumens standard, hope this helps.
Is it key chain friendly?!!?
slayerv29 3 weeks ago
@slayerv29 Not really, I'd go AAA or smaller for keychain.

@bubbawilcox The QMini AAx2 can use a 14500 and a spacer/dummy cell.
The Quark AAx2 can not use 2x14500 unless you use the high voltage head (from the Quark 123x2)

@SparkDischarge The QMini AAx2 could use a 14670 and a 33mm spacer (if you can find one, or make one)

hey does anyone know if you can do this with fenix's ld10? that would be freaking cool if you could!!!!!!
trocha419 1 year ago
@trocha419 Yes, the Fenix LD10 uses a boost circuit, so if you use the 14500 you overdrive the circuit. But you lose all of your lower modes.
If you want to retain your modes, you need a LiFePO4 14500, which has lower operating voltage than 'traditional' ICR/IMR 14500

What is the difference between the older R5 emitters and the new S2, it seems like the lumen output is lower and the run times are lower as well.
V3RNIM 1 year ago
@V3RNIM Testing standards are now Regulated by ANSI. The S2 emitter is 7% brighter than the R5, but they are now using a new testing standard so you will see the lower ratings. The ANSI testing will allow apples to apples when comparing brand vs brand.
PFIDude 1 year ago
@PFIDude Thanks man, it was a little confusing seeing that the new Emitters have lower lumen ratings that the older ones. Now it makes sense. I wonder though what the R5 would be when put against the new standards?

Hiking at night can be dangerous but I'm sure you know that be careful keep up the good work!
archery425 1 year ago

You should get some of these in the project.

hey nutn' you ever look at the dealextreme torches?
shoopwhoopX 1 year ago
Another good light I bought a Fenix TK15 to put on my AR puts out 337 lumes. It's not bad on weight but they r coming out with the PD31 and I think it throws 307 lumens on turbo and it's really light. Anyway love what u do nutn u have turned me on to some great products, aimpoint CompML3, Fenix, o and thank u very much for the 15% off on evil Roy steel targets. Keep doing u dude.

Something does not compute. You say 260 lumens, when 4sevens says 66 lumens on regular cells? 4sevens says 1.5v max in the Mini AA, but these 14500s cranks 4.2v?
K4LA55 1 year ago
@K4LA55 4Sevens only posts the specs (lumen ratings now revised to be more accurate...ANSI style I believe) of approved power cells. The 14500 is not approved officially for the reasons noted in sidebar description. 260 Lumens is the best info I could gather; may be more or less but it's close and it's extremely bright.
nutnfancy 1 year ago
I have run Li-ions in AA lights for many years now.
these 14500 batteries are inexpensive and will work surprisingly good in lower temperatures. I have them mounted on bikes outside in snow and ice 24/7 and no problems. also travel with these AA lights are handy : you can find normal AA's locally. If you are a novice DON"T use unprotected Li-ion batteries!!! In case of a short-circuit it prob. will lead to an explosion. Also separate the normal AA's from your Li-ion rechargeables
gimepepe 1 year ago
@gimepepe Great commentary and experience...totally agreed.
nutnfancy 1 year ago
@gimepepe I am thinking of getting a Quark MiNi AA Flashlight for pocket (or neck) carry and a Quark MiNi AA² Flashlight for my work pack. The larger light is good since I often have to lend my light to my young students and they are not always so coordinated. Most 4Seven lights are made for using 2xlithium cells (like the 123² lights). Could I use the 2x14500 cells in the AA²? Then I only need one type of cell with me.
XCritonX 1 year ago
@XCritonX You cannot use two 14500 batteries in a Quark MiNi AA² it will be way over (8,4V) the maximum voltage of 4,2V. The 123² are produced to take a max of 9V (but the min voltage is also higher).
If you insist on having maximum brightness and only one type of cell, you can use one 14500 and a "dummy cell"in your MiNi AA²
gimepepe 1 year ago
holy crap I never even knew this was possible. Looks like Imma have to get some of these batteries. Tubrocharge!

"Why so short?" The reason for the shortness of this video is maybe, that it is an "Update".
Just what I'm thinking =)
raphael808 1 year ago 19
@raphael808 You are correct sir!
nutnfancy 1 year ago
Doesn't a 16340 cell have a higher power density than a 14500 cell? and if so would give you better run times in a lighter weight and smaller size (cr123) package? If you plan on running liIon cells (voids warranty either way) I recommend the quark mini cr123.
therealcarbine15 1 year ago
@therealcarbine15 I have not tried that combination yet but your logic is sound and I'd like too.
nutnfancy 1 year ago
@therealcarbine15 In the real world, 14500 have greater capacity than 16340.
and the QMini AA allows for regular lithium Energizer L91 'ultimate' (and their cheaper cousin EA91 'advanced'), a cr123 in the AA form factor (titanium innovations crAA 14505) which makes the output of the QMini AA match the QMini cr123, and then 'overdrive' with 14500's!
I'd only use ICR/IMR 14500 in the winter, use IFR LiFePO4 14500 the rest of the year.
extreme versatility, and AA means 'always available'

nutnfancy 1 year ago
Nutnfancy, I went to the 4sevens website and they didn't show a Quark mini AA with over 200 lumens. Is there a special model number? Many thanks and keep it up.
EnduringEagle 1 year ago
@EnduringEagle it gets over 200 lumens if you use the Li-ion AA 14500 batteries, there isnt a particular quark that puts out 200 lumens standard, hope this helps.
