I have to agree with red157. As much as TCV sounds different from all bands. (You can't tell me that Dead End Friends sounds like any QOTSA material) I would have expected the next QOTSA album to sound similar to TCV's debut album. But what else can you expect when both the lead singing and lead guitarring are done by the only permanent member of QOTSA?

I'm not (Well not intentionally) insulting your opinion, it's just that TCV aren't particularly original (Neither are EODM, for that matter), being as they are remarkably similar to QOTSA. That said, originality is necessarily the hallmark of a great band, neither is the complexity of their musicianship (Metal, anyone?). I base it on song quality, in which case Eagles of Death Metal still edge it for me.

Oh come on, if you know anything about music you'd see that they're not. Just like Eagles of Death Metal are indebted to The Rolling Stones, TCV are similarly the spawn of the former bands of John Paul Jones and Josh Homme.

musicians have certain styles. that's a mark of a talented musician, someone who has a sound that is recognizably their own. so yes, they are the "spawn" of the JPJ and JH respective bands styles but that doesn't make the music unoriginal. their style really isn't like anything i've ever heard before. my expectations weren't as high as everyone else's when i first heard about them but they blew my mind. if you want to think they're unoriginal, go ahead, but i think you're missing out.

I'm not missing out, because their sound is barely a step removed from Queens of the Stone Age/ Desert Sessions territory. I still greatly enjoy it, probably due to its FAMILIARITY. There's nothing wrong with having a distinctive sound and the work of Homme is still remarkably different from his contemporaries, just don't think he's reinvented the wheel because John Paul Jones has added his input.

The main issue I have is, I can't see how someone who is familiar with QOTSA can call TCV particularly original. If it was someone who's mainly a Foo Fighters fan and unfamiliar with the finer points of JPJ and Homme's back catalogue saying it, I could maybe understand.

It's not like it was completely unoriginal; even if it was just a meshing of different styles, the end result would still be unique. Give 'em time and I'm sure they'll evolve even more into a more original sound.
