  • I'm I the only person who laughed at his joke ?

  • @Ahkuji i laught to

  • @docjazz4 I rewatched the part about transposition at least 9 times, can you make another video clarifying it?

  • Confusing is a lot different from something being COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND.

  • 12 people dont have a sense of humor

  • I dont has teh cake yet....

  • the first joke was really funny xD

  • what do u get when u drop a piano down a mine shaft? Ab minor

  • why has the stl other keynames

  • Somehow this video wanted me to take A# knife and crash on an apple till i Cb!

  • bad jokes FTW

  • Remember, if you can't C Sharp you'll B Flat!

  • @vzwald1 That's what you do on a Musical Road, C # or B b.

    :P

  • If you don't C Sharp you be B Flat.

  • Loved the joke, just like any other youtuber here :) To be honest though, I was a little confused when looking at the scale degrees, because with every instrument I was taught, and in chorus, we always used solfege. It would have been easier to follow if both solfege and scale degree number were on the visual guides.

Thanks though, for your awesome videos!

  • I got my ocarina fromfrom stl ( tener c) and the scale they have with it is way diffrent from the one they gave me ( lowest key is a 5 with a dot on top and the highest is an i)

  • anybody knows what kind of ocarina has 8 holes on top and 2 on the bottom

    ?

  • Understood it all :D

  • I got...so...confused. =[ Maybe I should wait until I actually purchase my ocarina before I take a look at this?

  • Say you wanna make a lower transposition, how would that work?

  • lol i have never head that joke before good one! :)

  • I was confused! But I understood the joke! lolz

  • I slept at 3:17

  • lol you joke was good

  • i though the joke was funny

  • Thanks, now I finnaly get it! Thanks, you really helped me

  • i just got my ocarina today and im watching youre videos to learn how to play and ir turns out that i bought a english pendant also more money spent but i guess.. its ... a good thing?

  • what if my pendent has 6 finger holes?

  • Actually I lol'd with ur joke xDDDD

  • okaaay...@_@

You don't know, by any chance, to what note the songbird ocarina Oot is tuned? I plan to get that soon.

  • @xXKaylieAnnXx It's tuned to C :)

  • @docjazz4

    whew, great!

    Thanks a lot :D

  • @docjazz4 im confused D:

  • @docjazz4 hey im wondering: i've watched this a couple of times and now i get everything but one part. and that is: how do use, in transposition, making any sort of flat OR sharp? ex. the thing you showed on 4:21 when showing in blue what holes to cover for that situation?

  • i am geetting my ocarina any day soon now i cant wait to finaly start practicing it. you know what i never even knew about ocarinas about a month ago but now i am getting one coz they sound so beautiful :3

  • WOw, super helpful! Thanks! im taking Ap music theory next year, and im sure i use some of this stuff, might i request a continuation of these? :)

  • i watched it about 10 times but im still confused. lol

  • What do you call the holiest chord of all? Gsus. :3 Get it?! because... ah screw you guys!

  • man. i dont have an ocarina yet. but man. you taught me alot in these two vids!!!!!!

  • wow his joke is amazing he must have A sharp mind :)

  • HAHAH that joke was soo bad it was good xD AHHH i subbed. youre great man.

  • FFFUUUUCCCCKKK THAT WAS SO CONFUSING AT THE TRANSPOSITION

  • Without music, life would B Flat!

  • @DeltaAlphaNuStudio

Without music, life would A Sharp

  • @DeltaAlphaNuStudio your A Sharp one

  • maybe you can help me a bit cause i got stlocarina . com/zmini . html

  • So, about the whole tuning thing. I use a standard 12 hole Alto by STL Ocarina. The description on the website says that the Ocarina is tuned in the key of F, but the first note (not including sub holes) is C. So, would it be more accurate to say this is a 12 Hole Alto F, or a 12 Hole Alto C?

  • @Squawkers23 is it a concert C or the C in the key of F (confusing right?). for example, alto saxophone is in the key of E flat and has a C major scale, but the alto sax's C major scale is the Eb concert scale (a C on the alto sax is an Eb on a piano). so the C major scale is an Eb major on piano

if your ocarina is in the same as the alto, then you would be playing a concert G. if you have access to a piano (or google) play a G on the piano and a C on your ocarina and you'll have your answer =)

  • @twiggymac

Actually, I looked into it a bit more, and it turns out that I have a Soprano F. STL just calls it an alto.

  • @Squawkers23 in either situation they are both in the key of F (or tuned to F). soprano alto tenor bass ect. are just terms for the general size and pitch. sopranino is the highest and contrabass (technically sub contrabass) is the lowest, but for ocarina you generally see sopranino/ soprillo to bass.

besides that point, try to see if what i said was true, it should be in the key of F like i said. it's C should be a piano's G

  • 12 people did'nt understand ._.

  • Hey, I understand all in here except for why a given hole will be covered to add the flat/sharp (i.e, why on the 4 the 2nd hole on the right from the top got covered to add the flat.) I understand why you do this, just not which hole is to be covered? Could you explain this?

    Thanks!

  • Where can i buy it?

  • Supersonic xD

  • stop confusing people

  • i love the song in the beginning what is its name?

  • I love their music and want you to present the music of the opening of "octalk" seems hard to play but I think it's worth thanks friend

  • how to play X O | O O on 12 hole ocarina ?

  • finally someone who actually goes into a REAL music theory with this instrument, everywhere I've look I've just found anime fans who learn by ear not really real musicians like you. thanks for sharing

  • @batteryAAP I see what you mean but don't diss the Suzuki method (listening by ear) it's a great method.

  • I can't imagine how hard this must be to understand for people who aren't in/have taken Music Theory :D

  • is an ocarina with a key of F# wierd?

  • @polarchuck999 actually theres all different types i have a soppranio c and tenor c

  • wait a second- im confused... what if you have a 6 hole ocarina? the ocarina fingering example (the top) had an 8 hole.

  • Great video and ti and si are the same just different teaching methods

  • since when its do re mi fa so la TI wasent it si or its me!

  • man your joke is fell flat ...

  • I have to say before I begin, you are amazing. I've been trying to teach myself how to play an ocarina, and I'm already learning so much just by watching these vids.

I am a chorus student, as well as an art student. I have been combining my two passions by making my own ocarinas, and learning to play them. I do this while watching you play and listening to these vids. It's educational. :)

  • Funny joke :) I'm a bit confused how you would know if Amazing Grace would fit into your range or not? For example, if this was some random song no one ever heard of, just because the first note of a song is 5th degree doesn't mean the song would be out of range, it could just be the first note is 5 of the base range and then down to 1 rather than up. Nothing in the chart indicated notes going above/below the current octave. (such as the lines above/below the numbers in the OoT Songs video).

  • Comment removed

  • @OniRyo in the song there is a low and high 5 on the ocarina there is only one 5. since you need to 5s to play this song you move the tonic(or the 1) up 4 notes. this turns what was originally your 1s into 5s giving you the two 5s you need. (i only know what was in the video but thats what i got out of it)

  • on amazing grace it looks like it says '31'. im all like, '' is that even possible?!

  • basically, if the ocarina is tuned to a c major key, you just switch keys. Am I understanding correctly when I say that for the song amazing grace, you just move from the c tonic to f tonic scales?

    jessica

  • where did you get the inline charts? i want them to make a good table for the forums

  • you make understandable what our teacher made seem like rocket science!

:) you helped me so much :D now I only have to save for my Ocarina (they are expensive (! :O)) and practice! OMFFFG I cannot wait!!!

  • but not a sharp

  • y do u add a flat

  • did i just go back to fifth grade? lol we learned this in fiftth grade, but you make it so much easier to understand

  • What did the music teacher say to his students the day before their test?

    Be sharp!

    Ba-doom-pish!

  • "Solfege"? So there's a name for those syllables? Hmm...I think I'm starting to see the light...

  • look please help i got a c soprano ... and i didnt know that it was the highest ... and idk what to do with it ... -.-

  • Wow...today i got my 1st 4 hole handmade ocarina from a rennaisance (sp?) festival and ive watched your octalk videos over adn over again, but now i actually have an ocarina to practice with..adn for that i say THANK YOU :D

actually...i wanted to get a 12 hole, or even an 8 hole but unfortunately they were all sold out..but im liking my 4 hole and im not a music person but i think mines an alto...ill have to look that up hehe..but anyway thank you very much David

  • This is the third time i watch the last part... it's still confusing for me x.x

  • @nanfesii for me too

  • hey David. one way to make your videos more interesting (although your video's are the most interesting ever/ i have seen) is by saying a little joke hidden in mid sentence like the one at the start of this video. i found that joke quite funny. funny enough to make me laugh for 10 minutes straight

  • i think playing the ocarina will be easier since i play sax

  • lawl joke from begginning

  • ahahah Flat major XD

  • 3:52 I get it, but because I understand, I know why a lot of people can be confused by this.

  • nevermind i think ill buy a good ocarina.

  • @joshuasonicfan Dude we dont care about youre ocarina save your thoutght

  • @Shodkev sorry that is a very old comment.:(

  • lol 3:36 so confuse @_@

  • thanks for this; the website i bought mine from told me the wrong numbers to use for my ocarina in the key of c major; it say c was 5 but i just need to find the right fingerings for it and i should be ready to go

  • um... I was fine until you got to transposing... I guess I just need to watch a few more times :P

  • I still dont get the transposition I have two stl sweetpatato 12 hole ocarinas and when you moved the 1st to the 4th that's when it matched my fingering and your fingering numbers where different?????

  • How does you/he make the vibrato/tremolo? I have an impossible time trying it... :(

  • xD I got it the first time too. Am I a nerd for thinking it was hilarious?

  • @jadedragon95 Yes

  • fingering

  • you talk mostly about pendent and 12 hole ocarinas but i have a 10 hole sweet potato and i'm not sure of the key that it's in, any advice for me?(please send me a mail or a comment on my account)

  • @tailsisreal Did you buy it off of the internet? If you did, you can go back to that page and look at the product description and it should tell you. I was confused about that too, and then I looked at it.

  • Ab major xDDDD

  • so instead of playing a 1 i play a 4?

  • Lol! I got the joke first time.

    very funny

  • FUNNAY MAN DAVID IL REMEMBER TO KAIL YOU LAST (commando)

  • LOL A flat major. xDD

  • Great Video! it helped me a lot and i understood it very well.

  • great video my freind.

  • cool david

  • awsome playing david

  • You Helped me really a lot, i didn't get it at all really well, but i think i can play now (except from Amazing grace Oo on my Ocarina it just doesn't sound like Amazing grace, more like "I want to play but i just cant") =D but i will study and study and learn to play it ;D

    Thank you very much

    Chiyo

  • Ciao not Chiyo, but thats closer than what I though it was spelled before I learned how to spell it(Cheiyyo) lol

  • I'm confuzzled...

  • hahahahaha i get it.... NOT!! i did get a chuckle though.. gerrr buffering...

  • I've got 2 Questions:

    1. Do you need to cover a specific hole to get a flat?

    2. Do you you achieve a sharp by lifting uncovering a specific hole?

  • that depends on the ocarina. As far as i'm aware, some of them have holes that will make any note sharp/flat, but the one i have doesn't have any of those so you can half-hold it. for make it flat, cover the next hole down halfway. to make a note sharp, uncover the current hole halfway.

  • thank you good sir^^

  • lol, how did you practice?? i'm trying to do some practice by watching videos to know some postions and you are amazing at playing the Ocarina :)!!!

Now i have a different kind of Ocarina, can you help me.. plz..

My Ocarina has six holes in front and two holes in the back, theres also another hole in the back but it's for the air to come out... are the two holes in the back for the high and low Keys??

  • I have one similar to this. . .I'm trying to google up some tutorials but can't find any.

  • oh man the jokes on us because i cant read the tabs for the 6 hole.if it only shows four holes in the tab what do we do with the back 2?

  • I like the joke at the beginning.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I gonna tell that to everyone I know!!

Well... mayby is that a little bit too.

  • Well, it was good, but you totally lost me in the shifting stuff...

  • I didn't get it until he Explained it and yes Kind of funny kind of not

  • @iloooooovveegoldfish music jokes aren't funny to normal people, and usually there not that funny to band people either, there just there, to laugh at them because there so cheesy.

  • all those idiots who say that joke is stupid, well that joke is hilarious

  • I've been trying to teach myself to play guitar. I think these videos may help me along with the program I'm downloading to help me my emulating a keyboard. Keep up the good work David.

  • great video, confusing for a beginner like me, but i think i kinda get it,

    thx a lot

  • The joke : "Baahhhhh"

  • i just got a plastic ocarina to try them out and its has 7 holes and a left thumb hole, its and alto c sweet potato coulde you tel me the fingering and numbering on it since its different then your like 10 hole u showed i think

  • oh whoops forget that comment

  • Now I just wish I had an ocarina to practice on. XD Seriously, I've learned more about music from watching your videos then I have from actual classes. I've tried a few music classes, but they all seem to expect you to have a musical foundation. These ocarina theory videos have given me the foundation that I needed. Thank you docjazz4.

  • that was better then thaking music lasons thatks

  • i have a 4 hole ocarina and can play zelda's lullaby and song of time.

  • good joke at the begining

  • you get 5 stars fro the flat major... Well done

  • how about the 6-hole pendent

  • how do we play a 6 hole ocarina

  • it was a good joke but you looked so uncomfortable saying it . be more confident

  • he did that on purpose fool -.-

  • i told my music teacher that joke and he said you can tune a keyboard but you cant tune a fish

  • i heard that on dragonball z

  • What do you get when you drop a piano down a mineshaft? A flat minor! (Minor=miner)

  • @Naaniichuan612 nice

  • @Naaniichuan612 My friends have told me this joke hundreds of time, I never got it till now. Still isn't funny.

  • lololol my oc is e4-d5 wtf and its tuned in G

  • i laughed at the joke D: but thats because im into music XD

  • ugh well tell me can you tune a fish better then a piano?

  • wtf i heard crikets

  • haha nice joke

  • i'm confused . . .

  • Nice joke :3 Great video. Keep up the videos.

  • Failjoke. Nice work otherwise.

  • mean

  • I just got my first ocarina and these OcTalk!-videos are seriously a great help for musical newbies. Thank you Docjazz4!

  • . . . After TEN times watching this, I finally get transposition! *sigh* I'm such a slow learner.

  • but i have to say that you are really good! this video helped mme alot :)

  • umm... i dont get the joke.

  • I just saw your "Theory for Ocarina" and i have to thank you, I really helped me-

  • wow i thought it was easy to play a ocarina but now i know its not thanks for the vids :D

  • can u purchess an ocarina from a store????

  • the numbers are really confusing, it'd be better if they where letters, i would understand more, like what is 1? is it C? idk im confused.

  • By 1 he means the tonic which is the first Degree of the scale. So yes for the C major scale it is C but for another scale like F major it would be F

    It's always the first note.

    really sorry if I'm wrong

  • 0:07 Ha. Ha. Ha.

  • pause at 1:42

  • BA-DUM CHH! Nice vid.

  • the joke is so bad its geeting funny lol

  • wow if he didnt explain i wouldnt have understood lol

  • i like ur vids in the night better then in the day

  • stalker

  • At 2:22, I see that you know Tonic and Supertonic... those are my cousins. =P Yup. Just another Flotonic joke right there.

Anyway, I like this series! I've watched every episode over five times. I'm looking forward for the next!

  • am i the only guy who got this first time?

  • It's ok i laughed at your "Flat Major" joke

    lol

  • How do we determine which hole to cover to add a flat? I've watched this like 12 times and I still don't understand =/

  • When you transpose to a different key, you have to do that whole whole half whole whole whole half thing he explained in the previous video.

  • look it up on a position chart or just go by feel =D
