  • Lol Tasmanian devil at the end

  • 2:00 kind of sounds like Little Wing. LOVE YOU JUSTIN! AMAZING LESSON!

  • Great lesson, mate! Always looked for something like this :)

  • Great lesson, I was playing around with thumb over chord technique, as per video, with finger 3 taking strings 4&5, eventually got it after a couple of hours struggling with it, then it occurred to me I could do that on a standard e shaped barre chord, using your technique to take 5 and 4 with one finger work seems to with standard barre and still free up finger 4, ie a 3 finger E shape barre, 1 for barre 2 for shape. Are there any advantages of thumb over. Any thoughts ??

  • I study music at University and I cop a lot of shit because I use my thumb. But I do it anyway. Because you can 1:48

  • hey i have a question in theory: why can i play the A D C G and i doesnt sound weird? which key is this, i always thought there must be 3 major and 4 minor chords oO help`?

  • How on earth do you guys get the thin E string clean with this grip? I can't seem to get it clean, and the grip also very straining on the hand, any tips on how to achieve this with a "looser" grip?

  • 'SCUSE ME WHILE I KISS THIS FLY LOLOLOL

  • when i put my thumb over i mute the first e string! what should i do?

  • @click5rox12 Try to get a note by just using the thumb, the rest can wait.

  • @click5rox12 press a bit harder, takes a while to get used to

  • @wesiscool123 how long did it take you?

  • @click5rox12 about a week, get your hand in a comfortable position and use the side of your thumb on the E string just practice practice practice and you should be able to get it right while feeling comfy not being strained

  • @wesiscool123 thanks:) hopefully ill get it soon:) can u do it on an acoustic guitar aswell or not?

  • @click5rox12 absolutely, you'll have to press down harder though so it will seem alot harder, but practice makes perfect!

  • What are the best effects to get a Hendrix sound with a stratocaster ?How bout Octavio effect ?

  • HERE I FUKEN AM, moving with progress with little wing, thinkang ahhh it snot THAT HARD... of course,,,,, now i gotta relarn a different fucking way to play bar chords b4 i can move on. THANKS JIMMYY!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

  • Dude thank you, this rocks my socks off and ive been playing for a little over a year, free lessons you are truly awesome, thanks

  • Finally a advertisement I can enjoy :D

  • I wish I had a instructor like you!

  • Awesome playing mate!

I will show this to my friend who also plays guitar here on YouTube.

  • It's all official now, but the thumb over the 6th string was heresy back in 1970 (I was 14 years old): when I was taking guitar lessons (MEL BAY BOOK 2); I asked the instructor to explain what Jimi was doing with the thumb hangin over the neck and to please teach me how to play like that. He said "Well, his technique is WRONG- but I can show you his stuff once you've progressed to MEL BAY BOOK 10!". (I quit)

  • I remember my guitar teacher would get mad at me when I would play like Jimi

  • Which pick-up on strat? Bridge or neck?

  • @jerakje neck. gives you a warmer sound

  • @jerakje neck, or the position right after usually.

  • Excellent lesson. I've been experimenting with this technique for a few months. When you start adding slides, hammer/pull, tapping, different chord shapes...you will never get bored, there is just literally a million possibilities.

  • What happens if your fingers are to small

  • @FrankJeeves You go and Check out Tommy Iommi who has 2 cut middle fingers and he's the Black Sabbath Guitar player ;)

  • justin youre awsome, i wish to hear some of your oown material

  • You are pretty much a live wire. I appreciate that. Thanks.

  • I gotta get an electric guitar =( Its tough wen the sounds dont come out as much on an acoustic guitar...but i gotta keep practicing!!

  • I meant to say "without" barring the bottom E with my thumb (see comment below in response to dingdongdanny) and just not playing all 6 strings from the bottom E.

  • @dingdongdannny The difference that it makes when you do not completely barr with your index finger is that it gives your little finger more manouverablitly as its movement is not restricted by the otherwise pinned-down index finger. I use this technique with barring the bottom E with my thumb by not playing all 6 strings. You can move this pattern to any key.

  • Nice playing dude. Good of you to take the time to show people stuff. Before I broke my left-hand pinky knuckle I used to be able to play similar licks. These days not as good but get by. I just have to remeber Django Reinhardt to stop feeling sorry for myself.

  • hey bro good lesson the last note of that rif is an e right not a b otherwise great trick

  • If you like this type of sound, also check out Curtis Mayfield and gospel guitar.

  • I learned this trick the second year i started playing and now i play all chords that way even the A shaped ones. My thumb is on the E string when i play solo too that way you get a better grip on the fretboard and it enhances your bending and vibrato plus you can mute strings easier.

  • Very good Lesson mate!!

  • I saw a documentary in which Noel Redding was trying to demonstrate this exact technique explaining it as he went along. After he gave it a couple of tries he took his hand off the neck of the guitar shook the cramps out of it and said something like “Jimi had huge hands so it was very easy for him”.

  • i dont know how to play guitar yet .....ill get better i just got mine butt this does help

  • Man, that video was so useful. I kept asking "how they do that?" and now I know it.

    Thank you!

    Cheers from Brasil

  • The telle sounds Great man the boogies an awesome amp aswell Ive got one and its got a wonderful srv jimi feel to it, keep on keepin' on

  • a humble thanks 4 this and all u given its a great help

  • There are a lot of other really helpful videos about this same thing, but this helped the most

  • 1:48 frusciante does this in 'pretty little ditty'

  • God damn insects

  • This is very helpful

  • Justin, is there an advantage of using the thumb if you can just do the same thing with a standard barre.. maybe you can't progress to holding the A and D string with only your ring finger?

  • Thank you man!!! Really useful!! Salutations from colombia

  • thx, man! tele sounds goods. no fx needed if you hit the notes right. pick is problem. see hubert sumlin.

  • Cheers Justin. Primo lesson. Much appreciated bro. K up the good work. From a kiwi living in London

  • that is hey joe the first chord sequence you tell us c/g/d/a/e

  • there is always so much info in your videos-thanks for the demo and your efforts.

  • my grandfather played this way for many many years, he called it box chords. It allowed him to play harmonies with his rhythms. While picking the strings, he used his other fingers to pick harmonies.

  • Hey Joe.

  • great lesson thanks

  • I'm in love with Justin.

  • Hi Jus. Careful on the flick at the fly...it may well be JIMI givin ya a big little kiss to say fanx for you givin us all his magic. Respect x

  • @7000bass Damn hippies. XD

  • Nice hey joe progression . . .hehehe

  • Great lesson! But my hands are too tiny for it....

  • @SOM3RANDOMDUD3 your guitar is too big

  • I'm quite experienced (deliberate pun!) & I always wondered how the Mighty Jimi did that lead/rhythmn thing - excellent teacher mate, explain patiently without being patronising...keep up the good work fella! Not convinced by the beanie though ha ha.....only kidding....

  • @1702philip I agree. The thing about Jimi that made him so great were his rhythm chops. He got that from all those years backing "soul" groups. He really had that "James Brown Thang" down pat. He could build up so much momentum which set up his unbelievable solo work. What I notice is how much you have to build your hand strenght to really play those chords for extended periods. I know Jimi had huge hands but that is torture after about 1 minute. Jimi could keep it up all night. No pun intended.

  • Great lessons man! :D

  • this is impressive.......nice pinkie usage.........

  • Thank for the amazin lesson man!

  • hahaha... Brilliant!!!

  • kudos for the flies

  • lol that chord progression at 4:06 is from hey joe.

  • @Gerchuuuu yea man :D sounds great everywhere you put em. You can even try wind cries mary

  • no me molesto moskito

  • is that a 52 reissue tele? you seem to have different inlays though ^.-

  • your a good teach... thankx!

  • Thanks mate, I've been trying to work out these voicings for a while now. I've got a gig on the 20th and I'll try it out. Thanks again man.

  • great lesson !!! I just wish i was a little more coordinated !!! practice practice and more practice !!!!

  • Man...you're cool...And those fuckin mosquitos are on a mission,you know...

  • Damn... How to press 4th and 5th string without muting the 3rd one? Imposible for me :/ My finger is to thin to press both srings placing it in between :(

  • Great lesson, i only struggle with the rythem. Could you make a tab of the riff that you play in the end (c, g, d, a, e) with al the up/down strums and picking notes. I couldn't find a documentation of that on your site. Thanks alot!

  • lol the shadow of the strings is confusing me xD

at the beginning i was like whaaat ? o_O and then i was like oh owkay that's just shadow

  • good simple technique that adds a lot of finesse and vibe. thx bud.

  • What a great teacher. I play in a classic rock band, and after watching this video i immediately started using these techniques to fill up the rhythm especially when the singer was in between his lines. And every one in the band positively commented after the first song. (which happened to be a hendrix song). Thank you. Your lessons are not only enlightening, but also inspiring.

  • I've watched most of your lessons, but I especially love this one. Well done man, keep it up.

  • thanks so much for the clear teachings...

  • Nice work!

  • my problem is i cant barre the 2 bottom strings with my index finger

    makes me rage

  • i just cant seem to get my thumb wraped aroung the neck of the guitar, and i have big hands!! Any Advice???

  • Argh at 0:07 I was like: TOO MANY STRINGS!!!

  • Great Tip!

  • Thanks,,I love Hendrix, good ,easy to follow lesson! Thanks again, from Fla.

  • Central elements in the Hendrix magic! Very good. I get so interested in the proper sound and the good sustain in these relatively clean tones. Is this due to the guitar, your Mesa amp or both ?

  • this is for beginners

  • Diddo! I've been trying to figure that stuff out for a while. You put it in a new light.

  • Hi, thank you for your great and helpful lessons. Is this a Hot Rod Tele? Did you say you just got it? Because at the moment I'm waiting for the American Deluxe Ash to be available again, because I think it's the right one for me and I tried a lot of different Teles, but not the Hot Rod. Does this give you the typical Tele sound, although it has no standard neck pickup? Can you tell me, why you are prefering this one? Thanks!

  • this is probably the most useful guitar video there is on youtube, because it was the way jimi spruced up his rhythm guitar that made song like hey joe a legendary song

  • nice very nice playing.....

  • hey i was wondering do you have to have hard callasus on your index finger to barre the e and b strings? im having difficulty barring those two strings. thanks

  • ope im getting attacked by a fly

  • if only I could be english :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

find someone to translate in french plizzzzz =D

  • @Axoutatiser I dont get it, hate hate the peoples from french because they can't say at goddamn shit in another language, not even english which and the "world language"

  • @IfearGuitars woah lay off a little bit... you cant be leaving us americans out if you're going to be bashing countries!

  • That little trick your using to hold down 2 strings with one finger is essential to my ability to play guitar. I even use the stub for some 7th chords! LOL

  • good trick

  • thank you because i need help lol

  • lovely clear explanation dude , its like sittin in the room with ya , an sweeeet playin

  • Thank You for this

    Greatly Appreciated

  • Hey dude, just want to say that ive never been a fan of guitar lessons, but you make it so easy and clear to learn, and you have a laid back aproach, so i can listen to you with out thinking what a hack... Cool stuff man, and im now furthering my knowledge of the guitar, so if im at a party and somenes says play us a tune we know, i can now do that. Peace.xxx

  • tnx tnx tnx tnx tnx a loooooot :)

  • hey justin, could you make a video on these chord progression?

  • "im getting attacked by a fly!"

"what are mosquitoes doing in my flat?"

  • JUst watched part one and part two and great lessons, I have learnt allot in a short amount of time. Thankyou. I will suscribe

  • it will sound redundant to give praise, but hell man, nice lesson

  • nice lesson thx!

  • rock on you're a good teacher give us some more

  • @MrRemotecontrol1982 look at his website (it's in the discription) there you find a lot of lessons so have fun

  • i think this man excels in the way he gives good clear simple examples of the subject he covers.he is a fine teacher.

  • 3:50 - 4:28 is Hey Joe

  • this video is without doubt one of the best instructional vids i've seen on youtube, clear, precise and really helped my playing :).

    Thanks a lot man :).

  • Fender guitar, hercules stand, mesa/boogie amps. Lol we got the same equipment :)

  • what pickup are you using? is it the one between the bridge and the middle one??

  • Justin: I tried this myself, but if you're going to use your ring finger to fret the A and D strings on the 5th, then wouldn't it be easier to bar the 3rd fret with your pointer finger and use your pinky anyway? I think it's a cool little technique, and it looks cool, but you could just as easily play it the usual way and free up your pinky by using your ring finger to hold down both notes on the 5th fret. The only difference is that you're either barring with your pointer or using your thumb?

  • Really helpful stuff! Great sound/video quality, good camera shots, and a lot of positive reenforcement! Good videos! Thanks. Keep it up.

  • He' s a aussie

  • Hey dude cool listen for a long time i hve wanted to play like hendrix i will use your methods and hopefully work for me thanks man!

  • Was the LOUD animal at the end really necessary?

  • Good lesson. Many thanks

  • lol... mosquitos always seem to interrupt nuno bettencourt's lessons also

  • The Riif you worked out 4:00min sounds like "Hey Joe" ;)

  • @CZA1112 Yeah it's the same chords.

  • You do an awesome job of explaining the Jimi Hendrix method of playing chords. Thanks for the help!

  • Dude, GREAT!!!!!

  • Brilliant! Where do you live?

  • when hammering on and off with the pinky, does he strum the entire chord or just double stops?

  • when trying to barre the B and E string with your 1st finger, is it supposed to hurt?

  • Very ~Cool

  • mosquitos owned JS! hahah Success!

  • sounds nice, thx. what is the difference between a tele and a strat?

  • Did Hendrix do anything like this for minor barre chords?

  • @agreewitme just lift the long finger from the chord and it will be a minor:)

  • @agreewitme Just reading some comments on this, and yes he did. Hendrix used his thumb hooked over the e and would play minor chords just lifting off 2nd finger. A good example of this is in Wind cries Mary. Justin does a blistering lesson in 3 parts on this.

I think the tonal quality of the chord played like this is very diferent to the conventional barre chord. I love it so much I use it whenever possible. Took me months to get sounding nice though!!

  • Did Hendrix do anything like this but with minor barre chords?

  • What type of Tele is that, looks very versatile could you tell me the model, also great teaching I'm a bit past that but your technique is very good for learning. Great Job Mate!

  • Hard to see the strings against the light fretboard. It looks like 12 strings in shadows.

  • lol what

  • I love The Beatles ,and I know that John Lennon have used this style too ,and i like this style very much

  • riconosco tutti i suoni di Jimi

    Bravo gran lezione!

  • Man, I think that you are one of the best teachers around the whole internet acess.. Really, you do a pretty good job explaining technics that actually sound good! Thank you very much!

  • @SenhorNuno this is what i was thinking right before i read this comment.

  • hate this technique too

  • fuck that fly!

  • that lesson just put my playin on a whole other level, good job explaining the theory behind it too, thanks for sharin' man.

  • I frickin hate this technique!

    >=[

    Dm

  • @Detman101 Y Whats so wrong?

  • It's just taking forever to get it down.

And my guitar teacher has YET to show me anything on it. I realize that I don't HAVE to play like this, but it does make fast scale-runs that much easier.

If I could nail the E-shaped hendrix barre chords it would be a lot easier than switching up from standard barre chords to other chords I think. Also easier to go from the hendrix barre chords to scale runs/licks.

    Dm

  • I see.

  • I'm slowly getting better.

It truly is about committing to it and just converting everything you know over to the new style of technique. I am slowly going through my catalog of songs that I know and playing them in the "Hendrix-Style" and it's going well. So far I have converted "Allison" by SLOWDIVE and can play it properly with embellishments using the Hendrix technique.

    Next song to try.....Hotel California.

    Dm

  • Thats great and yeah basically 'converting' songs to the new style works. I have seen some hendrix style vids of Hotel California so try check them out too. good Luck

  • Great lesson mate! You're a good instructor.

  • ha ha first flies, then mosquitos then bikers and football people and then some crazy fuzzy animal with sharp teeth

  • ogi bloke hailing from Kazgackistan G chord it up

  • fuckin bikies and footballers!

  • Thank you mate! HUGE respects from RUSSIA!!!! the best teacher i`ve ever seen!!!!!

  • you're such a man, keep it up

  • that thumb thing is freaking me out... i'm practicing like hell, justin. i'mma make you proud, bro.

  • oh and by the way, awesome tele ;)

  • hello

  • this guy is the kind of person you want to take lessons from,an encouraging person with alot of useful info.I`m in my late 50`s and have been in a bunch of bands, this pbstratocaster guy sounds like the kind of guy we hated jamming with,a condescending, name dropping, know it all.I`ve seen a bunch of Justin`s video`s,stick with him it`s good stuff.

  • well said 109gtbob.

  • amazing. Thanks man i owe you

  • Bro you've opened a new door for me in playin guitar..i now have somethin to work n perfevt on..i really thank you xD

  • dude this is a badass lesson. thanks man

  • you're from london hey

  • great vid...ty...:)

  • Absolutely waste of time!!. Spending more than 3 min and NOT getting to the point of WHY Jimi used the "Thumb bass". This guy demonstrates Gsus2 - G6 and Gsus4, which ALL could be played by barree chord. Now, why Jimi used the thumb is that he palyed with AN OPEN g-string (which is not possible with barree. ("Little Wing + Castles made of sand" is fine examples). And ofcourse, many guitarplayers, who are more than 50 uses "thumb chords"..So, this lesson has no real point, and is a waste of time.

  • The real wast of time in this lesson was your comment mate...

  • Well, prove me wrong then.

    (or leave some quality comment).

  • I can´t prove you wrong because you are probably right in your theory. Where you got it dead wrong is when you state that this lesson is a waist of time. This lesson helped me a lot and i´m sure others as well, where your "obvious theory" statements didn´t. Clear enough for you now?

  • tsk,,,tsk

  • Can we see you play?
