  • Thank you for your work, I learned a lot watching your videos, thank you very much. (Cris from El Vendrell "The Pablo Casals village" - Catalonia- Spain)

  • now.... wht happens with people with really long fingers? :P

  • Giving lesson

  • Is it necessary to have the chewing gum into your mouth when talking and living lesson?

  • How do I avoid pressing hard with my thumb?

  • I guess this method helps with pronating. By focusing on the thumb and index finger, this encourages pronating without even mentioning it. Good idea!

  • ok so your thumb should be on the rubber not the frog? and your pointer should be on the rubber part too? and then your other figers keep it from falling forward? am i doing this right?

  • 私の要求に答えることを行っているか。

  • my pinkie stiffens when i try to hold it this way... any seggestions? i have a teacher and i try to practice, but this has always been my problem :O

  • Haha...I've been playing cello for 10 years and I've totally been doing it wrong.

    Lefty~~

  • WAKE UP!

this is the nicest bow job video of all.

  • how do i hold the bow without my hand slippping from its grip? I'm holding it like he says but it keeps slipping.

  • this helped a lot...thank you so much

  • yea same with me... i keep putting my thumb in the wrong place but this helped

  • hi Mr. John! I'm worry because a few months ago I get sick of epicondylitis and I coudn't play for several months and now that I returned with my classes I have noticed that I can't relax my thumb when I hold the bow and it really hurts..and my teacher just repeat and repeat same thing : relax your hand! but he never said to me how!! I think he is getting angry for that situation so...I mean ..could you give me some advice please?

  • You don't get "sick with" epicondylitis. It's called tennis elbow. You just develop it. It doesn't make you sick.

  • I'm new to cello, and I have difficulty holding the bow (especially the thumb) as shown in this video. Is it wrong to instead place the thumb so that it is nestled inside of the curve of the frog?

  • Actually, yes it is.

  • When you're lefthanded, do you have to get a left handed cello/specially made?

  • nah

  • Dude what if i am left handed

  • it doesnt matter. you just bow with your right hand and finger with your left.. i guess you could try to play left handed but it would look strange and the bowings would be opposite.

  • thank you so much! this has helped me loads!

  • I play violin so I can hold the bow, but not exactly like this. Can the violin grip of bow still be good for playing cello? =/

  • Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sorry

  • Don't worry. I already learned the right grip.;)

  • Thx. You make it so esay... I'll practice it.

  • thank you very much! Now I know how to hold the bow.

  • thanks very much brother. you're really a great help for us..

  • Thanks!!! I've been playing cello for 2 years and I used to play with my thumb underneath the frog. Pretty bad, yeah. I need a reminder every so often about bow hold. Thanks again!

  • THANK you !!!

    Your teaching is great!

    It really helped me!

I m trying to learn cello by myself...

  • Thank you so much for your video and I found it very useful. I love watching it. very appreciated!

  • I'm a violinist attempting to make sure I don't play the cello like a big violin - this has been really helpful!! I've only been playing around on it for a week so I need to be patient...

  • Thanks for all these videos, it makes practicing a lot less lonely and isolated.

  • GOD Bless you John!

  • Thank you for making this video. My teacher showed me how to hold the bow at my third cello lesson yesterday and at the time it felt fine. Today, as I was practicing, my bow hold felt a bit awkward, but your mention of the thumb and forefinger being the active digits was just what I needed to hear. Thanks again.

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain the cello. I have stopped playing for a couple of years due to the fact that my right hand would hurt after a few moments of holding the bow. If I relaxed my grip the bow would fall through my fingers onto the floor. I will try your techniques this weekend.

  • Thank u so much for this video! I've been playing the cello for almost nine years and I want to apply to the Sydney Conservatorium this year, but I'm having issues with holding my bow, cuz my hand kept cramping. I now realised that I hold my thumb wrong. I'll try fixing it next time I practice! Thanx again!

  • I don't play cello. I'm watching the videos just 'cause I love this instrument (although I don't play it him)

and you, John, explains all the details pretty well...

    Congratulations !

(sorry for some possible english mistake, I'm brazilian)

  • I hope this helps me, the way ive been holding a bow is by what Ive done naturally for 3 years...ive never really had a teacher that really corrected me, so ill do it myself. Thanks!

  • excellent Im a violinist but I love people that helps people with technique and teaching. great work

  • Thanks for your kind words, John..
