  • Great version! Very inspiring! :) My good lady wife has recently put me to task......

"I need a backing track for 'Scots, Wha Hae' " she says!! It's for young primary kids....your version is by far, the most accessible...thanks for that! So very good!

  • @lofi500

thnx my friend. where does your good lady teach? I am often in schools talking, reciting and singing about Burns........

  • What can I say - beautiful! This really gives me creeps.

  • @ForCarolToEnjoy

    thnx Carol ;o)

  • Its actually about Thomas Muir, well thats what Robert Burns said it was about

  • Scots Wha Hae (Scots, Who Have); a patriotic song of Scotland.

The lyrics were written by Robert Burns in 1793, in the form of a speech given by Robert the Bruce before the Battle of Bannockburn on 24 June 1314, where Scotland maintained its sovereignty from the Kingdom of England. Although the lyrics are by Burns, he wrote them to the traditional Scottish tune Hey Tuttie Tatie which, according to tradition, was played by Bruce's army at the Battle of Bannockburn.

  • Amazing performance. I'm proud to be a Scottish-American and descendent of the great King Robert the Bruce! (my surname is Bruce). I also love Celtic music and was trying to learn this song when I saw this video. It helped me a lot (although I'm not sure I'll ever be able to sing as well as it is sung here). Keep up your great work keltickev27!

  • Scots should bite a piece of leather before listening to this - I nearly broke a tooth! wha sae base as be a slave?.....liberty's in every blow....Awesome. That said, apparently what Bruce actually screamed was, "They've too many cavalry, so if you run you're dead. If you were going to run you should have done it earlier. Besides, if you fight you might win, and if we win we'll be rich". The bears, being rational, stood and fought!

  • Scots don't only have Wallace bled, they also know how to make music!

  • @matthijseric

P.S. Did i just see you on TV reciting Burns??

  • @keltickev27 tclifford88@yahoo.com

    Thanks a lot man

  • Thank you. Just what I needed to prepare for the Burns Supper on Tuesday

What's brilliant about Burns' patriotism, I think, is that it wasn't really anti-English. But it was anti-tyranny and pro-Scotland.

    SNP take note.

  • @LittleDragon2000 He was no Unionist, Labour,Liberals and Tories take note.

  • I don't have any direct relations to Scotland or the Isles in my heritage, but I'll say that when I venture through folk traditions from around the world I hear songs and read literature that point towards something greater -- and my God if you don't hear it here. Thanks so much for this. With Burns I could feel the pride of Scotland spill into the sea of Humanity and course right through me. Wonderful poet, and a wonderful rendition.

  • @IAmJustABard

thanks my friend. I agree with your sentiments re Burns......wonderful indeed and I am delighted you like my renditition. ;o)

  • This is a fabulous rendition, Kevin (I assume). I listen to it at least thrice per day. I've been to Edinburgh, Portree on the Isle of Skye, and Dunvegan, Stirling and Edinburgh Castles. At Stirling I saw the giant Statue of Wallace - a sight to behold! I love Scotland and God Bless you for touting her proud heritage of Freedom Fighters.

  • This really brings a tear to my eye. As an American whose grandparents came from Ireland and Wales, the heritage against tyranny is strong and similar to Scotland's history of resistance. Your voice is amazing, you play the guitar well and you do honor to those that died for liberty.

  • @ireland88

  • I don't understand why people whose the first language is English call themselves being the Scottish. If you don't speak Scottish (Gaelic) then you are not Scottish.

  • @qqq1985 The Scottish language is Scots, a cousin of English, which most Scots do indeed speak to some degree or other. It is, among other things, the language in which the above song was written.

  • @Traitorfish I believed the Scots were one of nations of the Celts. It means the Scots should speak in Gaelic.

No, the Celts are not cousins to the Germanic/Saxons who the English are. .

  • @qqq1985 Scotland is a composite nation, formed of the Highland Gaels and the Lowland Angles, through cultural cross-pollination and, after the Highland Clearances, intermarriage. It is not like England or Ireland in being either purely Anglic or Celtic, but is an Anglo-Celtic hybrid (the Bruce himself personified this, having a Gaelic mother and an Anglo-Norman father!) and so has two national languages, one Anglic, Scots, and one Celtic, Gaelic.

  • brrrrrrrrilliant! luv this!

  • @madhairman

I did indeed and this was in no small part responsible for his success. His brethren helped him get published and supported him in many other ways

  • I know Burns was a freemason but I can forgive him even that.

I like to think it was the spirit of fraternity that drew him in to the masons rather than the desire to profit from the influence of its members.

    Great version btw.

  • indeed it was although he did the latter too....what's to forgive byt the way? It was the norm for most men in his time

I went to a Scottish fiddle camp a few weeks ago and Elke Baker taught us to learn the cadence of Scottish snaps by chanting, "BANNock burrrn: a SCOT-'ish BA'-tle." It had us cracking up!

I discovered the lyrics to this song while reading a children's book to my kids. The little girls in the story sing "Wha Hae ..." whenever they need some encouragement to be brave and strong. We really enjoyed Kev's video. We had never heard the song before. (Please excuse us; we don't live anywhere near Scotland!)

  • For whatever an American's opinion is worth, I think Scots Wha Hae would make great national anthem. I fully intend to pinch the tune for myself when I come into my own kingdom. ;)

However, Flower of Scotland has grown on me over time. An early recording by the Corries is especially moving (Search YouTube for "corries flower of scotland 1968").

  • Tis truely some of the finest poetry ever written.

  • @PapaNoMidokoro

Did you know that Robert Burn's descendent is an American?

So before you say, you don't know what an American's opinion is worth, watch your P's and Q's, and show so manners.

And yes Robert Burn's descendent is not Scottish, he is American, and he's my next door neighbor.

  • @pluto4847

Robert Burns - no apostrophe - has many descendants...some indeed are now in the US. Why so aggressive? No arguments on that issue

  • Wow. This is impressive. Nicely done.

  • thnx my friend

  • A nice song played by a sexy man.

  • Not all Scottish songs have to be accompanied by pipes, especially those not actually specifically written for them, such as this. Scottish folk music is far more than a set of bagpipes, y'know. Look up The Corries and get an education...
