Thanks man, I just try to be real. I know how bad I wanted to play this kind of piano, so I just kept working at it, experimenting with riff sounds, listening to & watching others, as well as written music if you could find it & figure it out.
There is a lot to be said for playing enough until your fingers really loosen up & become more nimble. The free-ness of supple playing will help you hear things quicker. Chopin was all about suppleness, playing smoothly, with expression & a relaxed hand.
I really enjoyed doing and practicing these licks. It's great to have it slowed down so I can get the basic notes and improvise later. Keep them coming...I am doing much better because of your lessons. I've been doing Eeco's lessons too and find yours are just as valuable. Thanks !
Don't worry about the critics. These are free lessons and they help a lot of starting pianists out... Nothing more, nothing less. We are gratefull for that!
Dear Starboy, My apologies for being such a smartass. I also commend you for not telling me off in cyberspace. You are a true JJohnson afficianado and I respect that.
Hey Starboy, You've got the licks figured out, now maybe you need to develop some manual dexterity before you try to give the world Johnnie Johnson lessons. By the way, I knew Johnnie, he played most of his hot licks in Eflat and B flat. You sir are no Johnnie Johnson.
This lesson is not a Johnnie Johnson riff and, I never claimed to be of his stature, as I knew Johnnie too, for almost 30 years. Simply a great guy & master piano player in his genre.
These are free lessons, done off the cuff, so what do you expect for nothing?
I'm just glad a lot of people are having fun trying to play boogie/rock piano & find these lessons helpful; as a starting point or to add to what they already play. I've already said that freakyhead 20 has a bunch of good lessons.
Right hand help please...trouble following the middle part right after C is played 3 times. "1"(GC C, FA Eb, EG C), "2"(GC C, FA Eb, EG) repeat "1", repeat "2", Cx3, ??????????? until repeat "1" and "2" again.
You've kind of lost me there. I did three variations of the riff, then drifted off to the move to F before coming back to the main riff and a tag ending.
The move to F and related notes played is too much to put in this reply, so you'll have to use your ear, trying to listen to the notes played, and your eyes, trying to catch the keys I'm playing. That's all I can offer on this request...
Your "Hot Lick in C - Extended" video helped. Now for the challenge of getting the mind to accept playing the right and left hands at the same time! Thank you for the video lessons. They are very appreciated.
Every question and comment and rating is appreciated too, by all of those of you who stop by to check out the sharing of what I've learned & created over the years.
My goal is helping all of you to have fun and make progress! Be patient with your playing, and play a lot, with little breaks now & then to avoid tensing up. Keep it loose & free, but use a metronome sometimes too, to develop steadiness and economy of motion. Best to all of you in your musical quests.
Rapture, glad it helped you. I've been searching for good riffs myself for a lifetime, adding what I found as I went along, looking up pianist Johnnie Johnson in the 70's, finding Eeco's youtube vids (freakyhead20) lately, all just to improve & have fun. The more you play the better you get. Try to get in an hour a day & you'll see what I mean.
Thanks rounder2u, We had problems all day long getting the vids to youtube, got started late, had only an electric piano, & I was pressed for time while out of state w/someone helping me by videocaming it, as don't have my own. So forgive the roughness of the lessons, but there they are & I trust they will help some players.
:) thanks a lot for this tutorial .. i'm a piano beginner but i have a lot of fun playing this ..
i've tried to catch up on the part after those riffs (1:17 - ) - still got issues telling right hand to play something else then left one :(
