Hmmm, it seems that even the US authorities themselves accepted that the F22 and the F35 are useless compared to other new planes. Very advanced high tech but useless, so they say.
Anyway, I think that there is much confusion around about the importance of stealth properties. Stealth is an advantage for ground attacks but not so much for air combat. The F22 for example may be invisible for ground radar stations, but this is not nevessarily true for a radar mounted on another plane.
What is in use is a "preliminary" version of it, not the initially planned fighter plane. The F22 was still in development when they decided to abandon the project and not finish it. It was a project that went wrong right from the start, so they say.
This doesn't mean that it is bad. It only means that it is not as good as it was thought that it would be. I guess that it will be given a fighter bomber or ground attack role, but it will not be assigned to air superiority tasks.

The F-14 is actually a superior to the f-15 -18 in air to air combat. The reason they don't really use them anymore is because they cost huge amounts of money in upkeep due to the swept back wing design.

And Gripen have been sold to way more countries than south africa. @TheSwekebab i serious;y thinnk u need mental help, the gripen wasnt introducted into service until 1996, the mig25 came into service in 1970, and that then spawn the chain of aircraft that i talked about, and that was all b4 1984 so 12 years b4 the gripen, and an example of a 3rd gen fighter is the f4 phantom, the mig 21, the mig 23, the a7. not the f16 and f15 in there original models are 4th gen. now they r all 4.5 gen. but the gripwen was nowhere bnear being the 1st 4th gen fighter.

@ps3bandit8 Wikipedia and many other sites says that raptor costs 361 million dollars and i know for sure that gripen costs 75 million ^^ Look when ur chosing the best airplane its just not witch plane that could shoot down the other. For example, a raptor needs 36 hrs of maintenance for 2,2 hrs of flight and the Gripen only needs 10 minutes for refueling and rearming and then its back. In every war it have shown that the one that have the most fighters, not the best wins.

A war between 2 countries 1 had 100 raptors and the other 450 gripens (due to the low price) In a start of a war u bomb airfields so the but gripen is hiding in road bases so raptor cant strike them out with bombs. a raptor needs 32hr of mainenternce for every 1 hour of flight witch means that it would almost never be avavible. The gripen however only needs 10min to refuel and rearm. Continuing on a new page.

A raptor wouldent know where they should attack because the gripen could be hiding at any road anywhere in the country. Gripen could strike and return again without the raptor having time to strike back. However when the raptor would strike the gripen knows from what airbase and so on. After some months the most of the raptors would be grounded for repaisr.... Gripen wins...

We all love the F-14D, but there is no way that it would have been superior (as compared to "any" of the aircraft listed before it) in a dogfight. The Tomcat was an interceptor; emphasizing radar/missile range, speed, rate-of-climb, and ceiling all at the 'expense' of agility. This was the reason the two pilots over the Gulf of Sidra sounded so shaken after downing the 2xLibyan MiG-23; the MiGs having nearly closed within a radius where 'they' would have had a very deadly combat advantage.

Hmmm, it seems that even the US authorities themselves accepted that the F22 and the F35 are useless compared to other new planes. Very advanced high tech but useless, so they say.
Anyway, I think that there is much confusion around about the importance of stealth properties. Stealth is an advantage for ground attacks but not so much for air combat. The F22 for example may be invisible for ground radar stations, but this is not nevessarily true for a radar mounted on another plane.

What is in use is a "preliminary" version of it, not the initially planned fighter plane. The F22 was still in development when they decided to abandon the project and not finish it. It was a project that went wrong right from the start, so they say.
This doesn't mean that it is bad. It only means that it is not as good as it was thought that it would be. I guess that it will be given a fighter bomber or ground attack role, but it will not be assigned to air superiority tasks.

@MajorDumai The F14 is garbage, and has always been garbage. It would not be able to hold its own in a fight. It was designed to fire the Pheonix missile at extremely long ranges. It is essentially an interceptor, not a dogfighter. The F15 can hold its own against an F16. In a turning dogfight the winner is the better pilot.
Aircraft are moving from out-turn, out-run to see first, shoot first, do not be seen.

The new Su35 is for all practical purposes, however, developed from (and now considerably 'more' advanced than) the earlier Su37 prototype. Hence, its fair to call the Su37 a 'fighter' ...even though its mass-production variant is the new Su35. Under a few superficial differences, the two aircraft have much in common.
