I generally start by trying to find a point at which the top head resonates and starts to have a sustained note rather than have it loose and flappy. Then I tune the bottom head so it is in tune with the top head.
When you get it right the drum will sustain the same note as when you first hit it without dropping or raising in pitch noticeably. Sometimes this can be a really frustrating exercise but if you persevere it is well worth it. Good luck.
The CAD E300 is a really hi end microphone that retailed around $3000 in it's day. I am pretty sure that there were some copyright issues with the design which is why CAD stopped making them.
I think it is a great mic and has been my number one mic for the last 10 years. There may or may not be better mics out there for the money, it depends how much the CAD costs.
This was done with no processing using the pre-amps in my Tascam desk, so it a good preamp should make it better.
@AuroraSunset I just had a thought that may be worth mentioning. My mic is the Equitek E300, that is no longer in production. CAD is selling an E300 currently that is not the same mic. If you are thinking of the new one I have no experience with it.
@SalemKun1 The china is a 14" wuhan. I really love the short sustain. They are great cymbals and really cheap but you have to go through a few and find one you like as they all sound totally different.
It is a bit fragile as well and I am pretty scared of cracking it. The Paiste 200216" china on my right is over 20 years old now and it has done a lot of work, is very durable and still sounds fantastic.
@jfrese98 Hi, I recorded the drums with one room mic, a CAD E300 series 1 large diaphragm condenser mic that is no longer made. The position of the mic makes a huge difference to the recording, but if you get it right you get a really good drum sound if the drums themselves sound good. There is no EQ or processing of any kind on this recording, it is exactly how the drums sound. The video was done with a Canon 550D and then synced up to the mono digital audio track. Thanks for your interest.
Although I am pretty happy with the sound of the response 2 heads, I found them really hard to tune.
I have mainly used pinstripe heads and Evans G2 and G1 clear heads. I was keen to try coated heads on this kit. I would prefer to try G1 or G2 coated next time for this kit. The response head on the 16" tom had a big rectangle section of coating flake off. I have never had that happen on any other brand of head.
Nice drum sound and nice skill ^^
