What did they smell on your gear? Wasn't all of your food hung up? I did that trail in December 08' and saw signs of bear everywhere, but surprisingly didn't have any encounters.
We do not no what they smell on our gear. We think they just wanted food because the Ranger told us that something like this happen the week before. So the closed the camp site down. Also, yes all of our food was hung up.
My wife and I are from SC, but now live in Alaska. We LOVED the pics and your selection of music you put with your video. We also loved it because we are preparing for a 4 day backpacking trip into Denali National Park this summer. We have been preparing for weeks with smaller backpaking trips. Thanks for capturing your trip and sharing it with others. And bears, they happen.
We were 2 miles away from the end of the trail so we hiked out. Then we went to Clingmans Dome and a kid got hit by a car so they had to air fly him with a helicopter so they stopped the road. Then we had dinner and we hiked back in and saw what you saw. So we hiked out and spent the night in the car.

Nice piece! My wife & I are backpacking in the Smokies for the first time. Looking forward to it! Here's hoping we don't run in to your bear!
