If you look closely his neck is broken and he is in fact hanging. Pause at the moment when they take a photo that lights up the picture of him. The head is hanging 90 degrees horisontally backwards.

I don't get how they drop the gallows and then the camera shows a few seconds later his dead face while he is lying on his back. Shouldn't he be left hanging so he can die, or is that edited?

It is very simple. The fall, in combination with the weight of his body, broke his neck and kills him quite quickly. Only when a man is hung without such a fall, the neck does not break and the choking process is much slower.
