i drank for 20 yrs also smoked off and on and then regularly at night for the last 5yrs of drinking. quit drinking but continued smoking. i could not have quit drinking without it. now due to many factors i do neither. it should definitely be an option for alcohol problems. it is less toxic, less destructive and less addictive. being drug free should still be the goal for people prone to addictions but if alcohol and tobacco are legal this should DEFINITELY be also.
It works. I can tell you first hand. I went from drinking a pint of vodka a night, to now drinking nothing, one glass of red wine, or possibly two glasses if it's a long night. I just can't drink a lot when I do cannabis, and the cannabis takes care of my stress (what led me to drink).
It works long term too. I haven't gone back to heavy drinking and it's been 2 years. I see no sign of going back, as long as I have cannabis.
This is completely true! I've been an alcoholic since I was 18 (I'm 29 now). I've tried AA and 12 step with 0 success. I recently took up smoking marijuana and my drinking has been GREATLY reduced. Most days I only smoke & once in a while drink (usually when im out of weed). I know smoking weed sounds counter-productive but trying to stop drinking completely cold turkey is nearly impossible and for most unrealistic. By the way, I used a vaporizer to avoid the effects of smoke on the lungs.
Sorry if this is a dumb question. Is there a difference between smoking medical marijuana that is prescribed or smoking with out medical supervision to help abstain from drinking?
I'm an alcoholic. Weed doesn't seem to cut for me. I like it, but that doesn't mean it will snuff out the cravings. Let alone the withdrawals. Sweating, shaking, anxiety, depression. It's hell. I'm on benzos just to survive withdrawals. Alcohol withdrawals for me are more intense than average people 'cuz I have a dissociative condition. Wish weed worked for me. Kratom on the other hand works miracles. Unfortunately I experience negative come-downs.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!! TRUTH BE TOLD!!!! TO HELL WITH THE COMPANIES THAT MAKE MONEY OFF OF ALCOHOL!!!! ALCOHOL is a DEMON! Weed is a safer and smarter way to relax!
Thank goodness you live in a country in which you can obtain medical marijuana. Here in England, there's no such thing - cannabis is illegal and that's that. I can say quite categorically that if marijuana was more easily and cheaply available in the UK, I wouldn't feel the need to drink anywhere near the quantity of booze that I do. Not that I feel I've got a problem with alcohol, but I drink as a substitute for marijuana, simply because, owing to circumstances, I can no longer lay hands on it.
@ShowRyuKen not only is it medically legal in 13 US states, but in Cali its basically completely decriminalized. In my city, if you have under 28 grams, you get a meager fine. Thats all. And in Alaska, as long as you stay in your house you can grow and smoke all you want! It should be totally legal. I have seen so many HORRIBLE effects of everything else, and cannabis has such minimal negative effects. LEGALIZE
@rsohlich1 indeed... correct! I live in Fresno California and got a fine for 1oz of medical weed even though I have a card to buy or grow. I sure do want it legal then I dont have to make sure my plants wont be stolen by the Federal government so a politician in California looks good.
I drank beer for 30 years and spent the last 7 years trying to quit. It wasn't until I started smoking 1 puff each evening that I managed to get sober.
12 step programs work for less than 5%. According to the triennial survey by AAWSO the numbers show AA to be totally ineffective and possibly detrimental. Cannabis method certainly beats the LSD method for a "spiritual awakening" that Bill W did.
@isegoria1 Dr. Bob prescribed it. Just don't mention that during a meeting. If you do some idiot that just got finished providing the talking points of Fox News will tell you the true history of AA's founders is false. Funny how those two go hand in hand. I either ignore them or simply say "some people need to go smoke a bowl so their head will come out of their ass" when it's my turn.

@blancokitty89 The basic difference is one of legality.

Thank you for an excellent message. Hopefully more research will continue to find more ways to treat this fatal disease: Alcoholism.
in UK:
Liver disease is the only major cause of death still increasing year-on-year
Liver disease is the fifth ‘big killer’ in England & Wales, after heart, cancer, stroke and respiratory disease
Liver disease kills more people than diabetes and road deaths combined
The cost to the NHS of alcohol misuse has been estimated at £2.7 billion each year.
