  • shapingasm

  • camo drums!

  • This is so balanced and blended and just so tasty and sweet to listen to.

  • @theflamfounder decription?

  • A good portion of Phantom's percussion staff defected to SCV last year. Maybe SCV is on their way back to the top

  • Twenty.

  • why don't you kids actually go march a top 12 dci corps and then you can talk all the shit you want about what's good and what's hard to clean. k thx.

  • this is just incredible. amazingly clean.

  • Good God this is so amazingly clean and so great to listen to.

  • Not saying the book is easy, because rennick always writes amazing stuff that seems easy but is really hard to play clean in a line, I just would have liked more triplet rolls. I only heard 2

  • To people who think their book is too easy.. It's always harder to clean easier notes.

  • @drmcbeats No, it's not. Most rams would be harder to clean than this. The thing is, Rennick's books are so freaking musical. That's what makes them difficult to clean. The drumline is complimenting the rest of the ensemble, as opposed to the Blue Devils who just play like no one else is on the field.

  • @TheLogan1156 Jesus Christ. "Musical" to people on YouTube means a lot of buzz rolls and easy beats. That is NOT hard to clean. And they aren't even executing it on a level that would make up for the low demand level of this book. I assume this is finals, but it doesn't say in the decription. Something truly impressive would be playing with musical direction, contrast and phrasing with more dense writing. More notes = more room for musicality.

  • @theflamfounder More notes = more room for musicality? lol

I pray to God you are not a teacher of any kind, because there are GENERATIONS of incredible drummers in all idioms and genres that would disagree with you.

We get it. You have a hard on for the Cadets. That's cool, they're a good line.

  • @cosmodrum1 Play an eighth note check pattern book like this for 11 minutes straight, with all kinds of musical direction and phrasing; or instead, play a demanding book for a minute straight, with that very same musical direction and phrasing. You tell me which one is more impressive. I'm interested to see why you and your "GENERATIONS of incredible drummers" prefer 7th grade bullshit beats to that. Tired of this elitist garbage.

  • @theflamfounder lol you lost me at "play an eigth note check pattern book like this for 11 minutes straight." That is completely false. You don't like Paul's writing. There's notghin wrong with that. You know what isn't impressive? The Devs playing a bunch of notes...and being dirty as hell. Check out literally ANY vid of their snare break this year (which wasn't very hard by the way), and you'll see a dirty break. I like the Cadets, and they play a lot of notes. And they usually play 2 heights.

  • @cosmodrum1 You are, of course, welcome to have your own opinion. But I don't see how anybody with a discerning ear couldn't realize that these beats (and scv's this year) have almost no motion change or demand. It's all very check-based, without much space, played with all arm. It sounds like I'm listening to the same thing over and over, for 11 minutes straight. But of course everybody on youtube thinks that their books are "musical" just because they play with good touch and play buzz rolls

  • @theflamfounder Id' take you more seriously if you didn't close your account because you posted a vid of you drumming and my guess is, you got blasted for sucking ass.

By the way, people say this book is musical because they play FAST cresc/decres rolls PERFECTLY, and they DO have motion change like comfortable doubles into subito singles at a demanding height. Oh, and perfect attacks and releases. You know, all that shit BD cant seem to do, lately.

  • I'd say this book and Cavies from this year (2011) have definitely been the most musical and creative writing I have heard. They are both amazing in their own ways. Phantom killed it this year and Cavies wrecked this year. Both so clean and the way they execute their book is ridiculous. Rennick and Mike McIntosh are both godly at what they do and will continue to be battling it out for the best book on the field. I love hearing their lines.

  • IS THAT NICK MANTON?!? 0:15

  • paul writes a lot of shit that sounds easy but is hard to play...kids hack through his book and say it's easy but they'd be dirty as shit if they were playing with a line.

  • 0:59 sounds like me when i rake leaves

  • Tastey stuff...love it.

  • :18 black and yellow?

  • Favorite part of this book 1:45-2:05

  • Which snare is Banished?!?!?!

  • @CheeriosMonster He marches Cavies not Phantom...................

  • its not how increadibly hard the drum book is its the creativity shows when its played well . im not saying that a drumbook should be as easy as a middle school band recital but as long as its tastful and challenging then it should sound awesome , i honestly think phantom nails it in that aspect

  • just saying, from a perspective think of it this way; Are Rennick's books easy? not necessarily no, but they aren't some of the harder books in DCI. but what makes them score so high is their musicality and how their flow and function with what the rest of the corps is doing musically. This very same year (2008) the cavies snare solo was much harder and pulled off much better than it was given credit for. So why did regiment win? Because their book was more easily appreciable in it's ease

  • @PogoPantheon well it all comes down to ho many ticks there were. thats why phantom won. they made the least mistakes.

  • Remember that 50% of judging for percussion is technicality.. If they won best percussion, obviously PR had a fucking badass, and technically challenging book

  • I wish I could see them up close like this. Then maybe they would seem almost human.

  • will somebody please pay attention to the basses for once?

  • McCollum High School now has these drums :))))))

  • @123Laurentee lucky bastards!! -_- lmao. how'd you get a hold of 'em?

  • left end snare marking time like a duck

  • ...wow

  • Anyone who thinks that ANY part of this video was boring needs to get out of music. Screw beef. Go music.

  • The roll at :40 is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

  • This drumline is really good and Paul can is an incredible arranger, but 90% of this video is BORING!!!! While I can't argue about how clean they are, I can argue that they are taking VERY few risks! Lots and Lots of check for 2-4 counts then some rolls. Right around 1:45 it gets good, then it goes back to check diddle patterns. I want BEEF!!! Where's the BEEF?!?!?

  • @oatsoda1855 Like your school plays anything beefier than this.

  • @jlwtformer Ad Hominim. Please attack the argument, not the person presenting the argument.

  • @oatsoda1855 But why does music have to be about Beef though? I understand what you mean about wanting to see more beef, but why does it have to be BEEF BEEF BEEF BEEF MORE BEEF PLAY BEEF THROUGH THE WHOLE BALLAD MORE BEEF BEEF. Why does it have to be like that? I personally find the lines that don't always play beef 24/7 to be more entertaining. . but that's just my personal opinion. We do all have our own and I'll respect that you want more beef! lol YUM! = )

  • VERY cool transition at :55-1:00

  • I got to see the semi finals lot of them. There is a reason they took drums, if you were there you would feel the same i think.

  • best drum break ever

    -----blue devils fan

  • @ugot2dowhatugot2do you are gay, now you are less gay

  • Classic. Perfect.

  • The tenor part at the phrase starting at 2:06 is just so damn catchy, mmm.

  • this vid just goes to show people music doesn't have to be hard to be musical

  • this vid just goes to show people music doesn't have to be hard to be musical

  • Synchronized woo's at the end.

  • These guys were fucking incredible.

  • god those drums sound so good! no wonder dynasty makes the best drumlines!!!

  • @bmascara34 not to mention there cheaper than pearls and yamahas!!

  • @bmascara34 yamahas are the cheapest

  • God damn, i love the way all these drums sound.

  • Jesus... so clean.

  • i feel like cavies have a more easier book than pr though...both my favorite drumlines anyways.

  • The quad second to the right looks Jay Jeter.

  • Im tired of all the bullshit people say about how every year PR makes the easiest book. I dont give a shit, and every other person watching this doesnt either. Do you not hear how fucking badass this sounds. Paul Rennick in my opinion, has the most creative and musical writing. There is definately a significant difference between other lines and PRs in how it sounds. Im not saying their gods but shit, why you gotta be hatin on something so appealing to listening to.

  • @justabackup Agreed 100% Plus, if their not that good or their book is easy (especially that year's book) then why is it that they won the Fred G. Sanford Award for Best Percussion???

    Their drumline is PHANtastic.

  • @justabackup They have a certain sound no one else has. No one can play that book like paul's kids. No on can write a book like paul. People hate because they cant participate.

  • @justabackup they win drums for a reason......

  • @justabackup i agree. it doesnt have to be retarded like bd, but paul rennick is a hell of a writer, and even if isnt super hard, it fits the music so well, and thats what helps with the score imo.

  • @justabackup plus this book is definitely not easy...

  • @justabackup yeah, and they play piss clean on top of that!

  • Comment removed

  • @justabackup They're all just jealous because they can't write as well as Paul Rennick, or play as well as him or anyone on this and every other Rennick line.

  • weird analogy here we go. Here is how I contrast styles of drumlines. So if crown wanted to kill someone, they would whip out the anti tank gun and pump him full of bullets. If phantom wanted to kill someone, they would quietly slip him a drug that would put him to sleep forever. Sorry ik thats weird. I hope someone out there found this entertaining lol.

  • You guys should crank your drums. :)

  • This is some really sweet writing. And talk about clean. :)

  • @fuzzypear123 #1 in drums that year. and paul rennick is the greatest percussion arranger of all time in my opinion

  • @retardmusicgroup yes, yes it is, bluecoats come in 2nd in dificulty. lots of triplets and shots,

  • this has to me the most musically inclined drumline I've ever seen!

  • Hands down the best line that year.

  • @sgt2112 obviously you dumbass. they won drums lol

  • @rreemmzzrruullee I think that you misread my post. What I said was that they WERE the best drumline that year. I also think that they had the best line in 06, 07,10.

  • I really like that tenor book

  • They're like the only line in DCI that uses quints.

    clleeeeeaaannnn...

    (drool..)

  • Dear Tenorsarefun,

As jay mentioned, microphone placement, etc, will affect how the drums sound on tape. It's called acoustics. Especially when you're plaing 32nds at 200bpm.

    Thank you,

    The world

  • Phantom's Clean. End. Of. Story.

  • u guys crack me up. if ur not a percussion person to start with then your already lost. anyway, you can b clean and sound dirty. especially with pearl. it is possible. it depends on where the recording camera is when in front of the drumline. and it also depends on which way the snares under the drums are angled. if they are angled facing away from the video camera, it can sound very dirty, because the recorder will pick up the imperfection that the human ear will not.

  • @jaydrumbum That's gotta be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Clean is clean. Dirt is dirt. Whether you hear it in person, or on video. So no, there is no playing clean and sounding dirty. Lets just assume you're someone with an educated ear who knows how to listen...If that is the case, then it would be safe to assume that to your ear, clean beats sound clean and dirty beats sound dirty.

    continued ==>

  • @jaydrumbum Now you may watch a video or listen to a tape, AFTER listening in person and decide that it isn't as clean as you first thought it was. That's because as humans we aren't perfect, and we can't always judge something from watching or listening to it only once. This is why refs watch re-plays at professional sporting events such as football. That's natural. It's called analyzing; looking back and listening more throughly.

  • @jaydrumbum you're OBVIOUSLY going to notice more errors (such as dirt) that you probably wouldn't have pointed out when it was happening in person...."That's clean, but it sounds dirty!"

I can't get over how fucking retarded that sounds. XD

  • omigod the Phantom regiment is the shit they played at the rockford memorial day parade, and everyone in my drumline section was like: "damn holy shittt man they can play!" lmfao it was hilarious & some of my friends said they looked lyk walkin toilet brushes which they did rofl.I'll try out for it my junior year, and these ppl hav won the world champs three or four years in a row! not perfect in this one,but better than i can play so far so im not complainin ^-^ all i gotta say now is: WHOA

  • are tenors using mutes? lol no not a trumpet mute for you smart asses

  • God i love those buzzes

  • cleanest triplet roll of 08 @ 1:07

  • @drumfill27 Don't you mean 1:27?

  • @hughesmr yea definitely 1:27 lol triplet roll up into 16th note singles down?

    FTW.. get outta here BD.

  • Great video.

  • Again wicked sick dude wicked sick

  • those Dynasty drums sounded FANTASTIC. Too bad everyone's leaving for Pearl.

  • @Tenorsarefun When I first opened this video, I was like "NASTY." Then I realized when I read your comment.

You're crazy. No matter how clean they are, it seems like Dynasty makes them sound shit-dirty.

  • @ThreeFourthsFull hate all you want. 08 was a very clean year for phantom. In fact If I recall correctly, they scored higher in 08 then they did in 07 (the last year they were playing pearl). I hope Phantom stays, but if they don't I wouldn't be surprised. Everyone seems to have jumped on the Pearl fan bandwagon lately. One ensemble that we CAN for sure count on staying with Dynasty is Rhythm X (=.Try calling this dirty all you want; the truth is you're a Dynasty hater, just like everyone else.

  • @Tenorsarefun I never said they were not clean. I said they SOUNDED dirty. The drums sound really, really bad. It's just an unpleasant "Plat." I didn't even know they were Dynasty at first, if you paid attention. The video really isn't high quality enough to see the Dynasty label.

The "Pearl fan bandwagon." No, I don't care if they go to Pearl or not, but anything but these drums. I don't hate them just because they're Dynasty brand, I hate them because they sound terrible.

  • @ThreeFourthsFull Wait, are you even listening to yourself? How the hell can you be clean and sound dirty? Just shut up while you're ahead. It's clearly not fact, it's just your opinion...What I don't understand is how you have a problem with this particular sound. Did you hear the drums in 07, and compare the sound to this video at all? Different drums, but VERY similar tuning...If this sounds terrible to you, than I guess the 07 line does as well, because the difference between them is minimal

  • @Tenorsarefun Okay, high school freshman, go ahead and try to act like you know more than me. Yes, you can sound dirty but still be clean -- If everyone's hits are at the same time, they're are clean. Which, for the most part, they are. But the drums sound terrible, making it sound like they aren't together. Also, if you think '07 sounds "VERY similar," then you have a very, very untrained ear. Idiot.

  • @ThreeFourthsFull high school freshman? Where the hell have you marched bud? You should listen around more...

  • @ThreeFourthsFull Buddy, you'd have to play your little freshman ass off to make a line like this. Of course its a tiny bit dirty, number one, they're rehearsing, number two, there playing licks you probably wont be able to play in your life time. So please, before you diss the PR Drum line, go work on your own chops till you can play better then that. Thanks buddy! Have a great life

    ~Benny~

  • @bendrumsalot415 I wasn't dissing Phantom; I love them. I was dissing their brand of drums. I was saying the drummers were bad, I was saying the drums sounded bad.

  • @ThreeFourthsFull So BAM! Suck on that!

  • 1st place!!
