  • I highly doubt using a watergun on him will teach him anything about tolerating someone. It would make me hate them more, if I were Caplin.

  • How about leave the poor animal alone, you dick!!! Hell, I'd kick your ass too if your kept messing with me like that!

  • stupid people.

  • I hope Caplin Bites the Hell out of that stupid kid Phillip. You spray me with water and then try and palm me in the face, you think I'd be happy or submissive? This was disgusting behavior.

  • Poor Phillip. Will he ever win?

  • The lion's will take the food given and might take the person as food too. Becareful when you train the cappy. I'll be ending it here. I hope I help in some ways.

  • Life is not easy to live and not easy to train when they are from the animal kingdom. Here are my suggestion: Don't stress the cappy and don't force the Cappy. Use a more friendly approach such as letting the unexpected person feed the cappy with his most favorite food. This does not mean the immediately becomes good friend. It'll take time depending on the cappy's learning ability to recognize a person as a friend or foe. Sometimes this method don't even work with wild animal like the lions.

  • until exhausted or if not the animal will become very fearful of his surrounding and it will cause them to fun in terror when someone or something engage them. However we dont want that to happen. We want the Cappy to stay in a proper and balance and calm state of mind. The best form and proper form to train almost all animals is during this stage. It is however difficult to achieve this level with the unexpected surrounding if other people and it involves people to surround them too. Life is-

  • I want to suggest that if you want to train this animal, you'll have to watch him carefully, meaning how he behaves, what kind of stuff angers him? example: when the cappy was being engage by philip, the cappy flee to a more comfortable surrounding but the cappy kept being chased by philip which caused it to go in defense mode, this is where most animals aggressiveness will begin to show and if taken over the limit the animal will go into rage mode attacking everything in his/her path until-

  • This is because most animals brain are develop a certain way when they were in the wild. They passed it to the next generations. Also most animals do not have the willingness to please instead they are lock in survival mode, meaning they tend to be more greedy when it comes down to food and they become overly protective of themselves, and fearful of other creatures and creatures that they haven't been around when they were at a young age and more reasons.

  • Alot of wild animals brain are used to being in the wild and used to no interaction with other creatures of this world. Dog's however had it easier in the animal kingdom to be friends or to be enemy and their willingness to please does help them to be more intelligence. For several reasons, most other animals lack the brain development of what a dog has. However with given time and proper interaction, all animals mind can develop just like a dog but it will take hun or thousand of years

  • I don't own a capybara but just by looking at this i know that is not the proper way to train a capybara to like someone. Just by watching this, the capy did not want to be near "philip" so it moved away from him but he engage the Capy anyway. This will cause the capy to stress out and feel threaten by the unexpected person. The mind goes into defense, this is were the aggressiveness comes from, protecting itself in fight of flee stance. The capy went from Flee to fight.

  • I mean you guy are bothering that animal. How would you like someone taunting you and spraying water in your face. It's people like you that get mauled...

  • So who else watched this hoping Caplin would go for the jugular?

Seriously Philip is taunting Caplin with that plastic gun, even I wanted to bite him.

    ...cool pet though.

  • philip's kind of being a jerk to Caplin, just sayin.

  • Has Phillip died from the wound yet? I would be disappointed if he hasn't.

  • ok if it was a dog it would be animal cruelty, but why is this alright?

  • And you say that you're going to try and 'train him out of this'. What are you training him to do? To put up with Philip's abusive behaviour? Well you've already trained him to put up with your own abuse.

He's just responding to Philip's aggression. Either get him off that leash and let him do it, or put up with the fact that your cruel treatment of animals has gone far enough and you should put him into the care of someone who knows how to treat animals in the correct manner.

  • Your treatment of this capybara is disgusting. They're used to living in large herds, not on a leash in your yard on it's own being made to play to your disturbing little tricks. Seriously, people who have Capybaras as pets are dicks. And then you let 'Philip' be around and attack it, knowing that the Capybara already hates him (I certainly hate him). The owner clearly has some sort of mental complex, probably owing to her not having any children, husband or in fact anyone who likes her at all.

  • Why can't the guy stop effing with the poor thing!? It looks like you have to piss Caplin off to make him try to nip you...

  • A capybara will kill for liver i seen it. i suggest you never put liver around that lil fella.

  • im calling animal services

  • Make Phillip sit down in a chair. Such a lethargic individual in this video.

  • I agree, Philip is a dick and should not be let around animals.

  • Poor Caplin

  • I don't blame him for not liking Philip... He doesn't know how to treat an animal. Before trying to "teach them to get along", Philip should be taught how to behave.

  • Never use aggressive behavior to think you are going to desensitize an animal. The only thing that works is positive reinforcement. Denying food and having Phillip be his only food source...would work more quickly..but he could never again be aggressive in his presence.

  • This was quite disturbing. I'm becoming very fond of Caplin and this mistreatment was terrible to see. There are better ways to enlighten prospective capybara owners about discipline than tormenting Caplin.

  • I'm surprised that you would allow someone to mistreat Caplin for the purpose of making a video...that seems very cruel. Philip deserved to get bitten. The video operator deserved a nip as well. Not a nice video. Shame on you for allowing this sweet animal to be hit, taunted and abused.

  • Why is Philip touching Caplin's head like that? Does it have a meaning?

  • just like all living things they dont want to be messed with..or bullied

  • this is awful... Philip has hit Caplin so many times already with the squirt gun... this is like provoking a rabbit until it lunges and bites. You should have stopped and walked away. Getting Caplin to trust Philip is never going to work... I can't believe you all even did this... it's like you wanted Caplin to bite Philip... and telling Caplin it's okay? Philip seems to be dying to squirt the poor animal! Obviously Philip does not like the Cabybara! Philip should stay away from him!!

  • @XantinovaX Just watched this. Can't believe the guy with the gun.... Agree with everything you said. You don't get anybody to like you by waving any kind of weapon in their faces.

  • this is very interesting. I know a lot about rodents, but not much about Capybaras. So they have a good memory for people? That is so so so interesting

  • This is kind of animal abuse, just saying. Why would you put an animal on a leash and let some guy make it angry over and over? what the heck?

  • I'd hate him too if I were him. This guy seems like a douche.

  • My heart breaks for Caplin Rous. Did you, his owner, buy him for the sole purpose of mistreating him? Why would you let Philip antagonize & scare an innocent animal who only wants to please you? If you possess one ounce of compassion, you will find poor Caplin an owner who actually cares about him and you will find yourself a hobby that doesn't involve self-serving stunts & Youtube.

  • Phillip seems like a dick.

I wish Caplin would bite Phillip in the penis.

  • Am I the only one who thinks Philip and the camerawoman are really, really stupid?

"Make him attack you again." "Then why are we videotaping this if that's not what we want." Seriously?!

And Philip.. Well, that's self explainatory by the fact that he was squirting water at Caplin to try to get him to trust him.

  • "isn't that what we want?"

    WTF?

  • you're crazy. Caplin poor, I want you to die hit by a bus

  • Phillip seems like a jerk. It does seem like you genuinely care about Caplin, but your friend Phillip and the Video recorder don't seem to care at all about him and seem to be exploiting him for YouTube viewers, I wouldn't bring them around Caplin anymore if it were me, but I have faith you know what you are doing.

  • does the kapibara bite hard?

  • Caplin SMASH punny Philip! i can hear im huffing and clicking, at least i think i do....

  • Philip wasn't being very nice to poor Caplin. Someone may need to knock some sense into Philip.

  • poor caplin, is phillip a retarded child from the neighborhood

  • This is bullshit, I hate what everyone is saying in this video. This is a video about humans baiting animals to attack them for video views under the guise of pretending it's about gaining Capybara trust.

  • I don't really know what your point in this video is, other than to prove how tasteless you are. If you love your pet so much why would you let someone treat him as such? At several points he hits him with the toy water gun... and you seem to take this in stride yet say how disappointed in Phillip you were. Maybe someone should chase you around your own back yard and smack you in the face with a plastic toy a few times... might bring things into perspective for you.

  • UGH... I don't like Phillip either!

  • phillip is a jerk

  • I dont like philip either

  • I don't really like Phillip that much either.

  • There were certain people at the stable that my ponies took an instant dislike to. Most of the time, I agreed with their judgment.

  • yeah grab his face and hit him. that'll make him like ya more. i wouldnt let that jerk anywhere near my animals

  • wow phillip is an asshole

  • Retarded idiots

  • i think Caplin should eat that douchebag :P

  • agreed

  • Philip doesn't seem to know much about animals. In this and other videos, Philip takes a dominant stance and keeps invading Caplin's space without giving him a chance to relax. Then when Caplin responds to the threat, he gets hit! You can't win an animals trust by getting all up in their face and hitting them when it freaks them out. You gotta let them come to you, and not try to put your hands all over them right away. And Carol is a drama queen. Philip should hit her with the water gun.

  • The solution to the Philip problem is to keep that animal-baiting moron out of Caplin's orbit before Caplin is goaded into attacking him for real and made to suffer the same consequences as dogs who attack humans (for whatever reason).

That would be a real tragedy, and a completely avoidable one at that. Caplin deserves better.

  • maybe if you quit hitting him and spraying him with a damn watergun he would come around a little easier

  • I'd be almost afraid for capyberras to become too popular. People will get them indiscriminately, and then there will be people who will do something cruel like remove their top front teeth so their bites won't hurt (they do that with pitbulls).

    I dunno...

Wouldn't mind having one myself if I were in the country.

  • Reminds me a little of the book, "Capyboppy" -- the otherwise docile capy is aggitated and bites a boy in the face.

I can relate to this. I have a wonderful Weimaraner, but for some reason, stupid people love to come to my house and stare at him square in the eye and snarl and growl. Why would you do that to any dog? Granted, my beagle does not react to this sort of thing, but they don't do it to her. I let my Weim out back when certain stupid people come to my house. The liability *sigh*.

  • if anyone has raibees its you phil! and to the lady who was trying to calm caplin down why diddnt you just take the water gun of phil and wack him in the face with it!

  • Yep.. can understand why he doesn't like Phillip. I hated him when i heard "I'm not sitting down."

  • Caplin wins ! flawless victory!

  • he should bite your nuts of you idiot and the should but you in jail bitch

  • I don't think that Phil is really a "bad guy" I just think he's a bit of a reckless person who is awkward around animals. The camera person on the other hand seems like a malicious retard who's sole aim is to make an exciting movie even if it means being cruel to an innocent animal.

  • Finish the job next time Caplin! No prisoners!

  • is the guy with the water gun retarded or something? he seems to be. what's the point here...

  • What a pussy, I'd hate to see how this guy reacts when he goes to someone's home who owns large dogs that jump on him trying to play.

  • I have to agree with Caplin, I dont like asshole Phil or snotty bitch Carol.

  • "He got me with his FANGS."

No shit, dumbass, you were teasing the poor guy, I'm amazed you didn't lose the whole finger.

Dude's lucky you were there, lady. :| Sorry to say, your friends are retarded.

  • I don't like phil either. He is antagonistic and has an aggressive stance. His body language is easy to read. And the person filming this is a moron.

  • I can see why he dislikes this guy but why didnt he like carol?

  • The story of why he doesn't like Philip is more complex than this videos shows. I was very disappointed with Philip's behavior but it is actually pretty scary to have a big animal like this that wants to bite you. You can see the video of the first run-in in Caplin Rous vs. Philip, taken many months before this.

The only reason I think for why he doesn't like Carol is that she spent a couple of nights at our house and he got a bit territorial.

  • So, the point of this is to show how it is to live with a capybara? Nothing against nothing, but you may as well show a kitten in the same thing. If you pester and torment any animal, it's going to do the same thing. I, like others, really enjoyed watching your videos and it does seem like you care about this animal, but this video just shows that you don't care as much as you want us to believe. How about telling the guy to stop tormenting it so it stops, not wait around until it gets mad?

  • What a freaking IDIOT!!!!! I detest people that do crap like this!!! LOSER!

  • animals can sense evil people, nuff said! hahahahahaahahaa

  • So why is Phillip being a dick and tormenting Caplin? Would it ever be acceptable to hit an animal with a water gun?

  • It acts like a guinea pig. A really big one. Why the hell would you WANT him to attack somebody, you idiots? I've seen the other videos and though you people actually cared about him, but this is sick. Stop tormenting the poor thing!

  • Uh you realize the actual OWNER, which is the woman with the silver/white hair, is actually trying to get those other 2 idiots from NOT tormenting Caplin and trying to soothe him? She's not the evil person, that friggin' Philip guy and the ditzy moron behind the camera are.

  • Yeah, cover his eyes with your hands. Nothing a mistrustful animal likes more than your hands near his eyes.

  • Are Philip and the woman holding the camera both mentally retarded? I would think the animal would get even more annoyed with him holding a water gun at his face and then when someone said, "Don't ever hit him; that'll only escalate things" the woman with the camera said "Isn't that what we want?" Ummmm... no! And for her info, rabbits CAN get rabies - all mammals can!

  • Like a pitbull with longer teeth.

  • Those that tease and intimate and show signs of potential aggressive behavior towards animals is a sign of a psychological problems they need treatment and should not be allowed to interact with any animal. They are a potential dangerous time bomb and they need boundaries and they need professional help!

  • This Phillip needs more instruction and closer supervision , do not leave this boy alone with this animal he is immature ,he will cause mistrust in the animal or cause injury to it.

  • This kid is clearly trying to annoy caplin and push his buttons, no wonder caplin hates him.

  • Hey, I know! Just don't let Phillip around animals. Everything about his body language and tone of voice says "I hate this stupid animal, he's mean, and all he wants to do it bite me - watch, I'll prove it." There's nothing about him that says he wants to be friendly and reassuring. Caplin is showing good judgment by being cautious and defensive.

  • I'm rooting for Caplin....no wonder he's attacking Philip....I would, too, if I was being pestered wtih a water gun and then smacked with it

  • I have to give you kudos, like cats or dogs, any pet can attack either cause their "herd" (the family) is perceived as threatened, or due to a perceived personal threat. People can be soo presumptuous as to think that being domesticated eliminates the animal's nature. I'm happy to see that you put this video on as an instructional that we should NEVER take our relationships with any animal for granted.

    Keep the videos comin....

  • Thanks. The point of these videos is to show people what it is like to live with a capybara so they can make an informed decision if they are considering getting one as a pet. They are not the right pet for everyone.

  • Agreed, my daughter has 2 guineas and though we love them dearly, they require dedication. And alot of patience.

  • I almost thought the water gun contained some nutrient solution and he did not like to be eat at that time.

  • Caplin is not spoiled, he's just ignorant on how lucky he is in that his life would be snuffed out by jaguar in his natural environment.

  • Philip better bring a popsicle instead of a watergun next time. Caplin would love me, ha!

  • Omg i want to get rid of my rabbits and get a capybara!

  • Caplin gets along with rabbits so you wouldn't have to get rid of yours. But he is really NOT on his best behavior in this video. It's meant as more of a cautionary tale.

  • I was going to be a biology nerd, but someone beat me to the lagamorph/rodent punch!

There isn't really an authority on human/capybara relationships is there? You guys are kind of writing the book! Well, video documentary. Dealing with guinea pigs is easier (obviously) but the principal seems to be similar. I don't know how to get a pig to "like" anyone they don't. Tolerate is another matter. Hopefully you are successful at getting Caplin to tolerate Phillip.

  • Caplin is so SMART! How much does he weigh now?

  • He IS really smart. Capybaras have an amazing memory for people. I think he probably recognizes everyone he ever met.

I weighed him about a week ago and he was 99 lbs. That weight seems to be stable for the past month or so. I think he has finally stopped growing.

  • Capy's are even better than horses for remembering people who annoy them! I've always wanted a capy - I even have a large pond and creek, but I think it is wiser to live vicariously through your videos and stick with my horses and goat. As always thanks for the interesting vid and information.

  • remember when Caplin had a birthday I made calculations using Smart Model? :) Now I looked there again, and my model says he should be 99 lbs by the beginning of December, and will gradually gain another 10 pounds over the next year. He will gain 1.5 pounds/months, then less, less, and will stabilize at ~110 by the end of the summer.

    That's my bet :)

  • I think you will win. I don't feel much like growing these days. Ah science, amazing what you humans can do with it.

  • Well, you will get more mature and heavy, 10 pounds more, 10 pounds less - doesn't matter.

What bothers me though is this whole film. What are they trying to do with you? To train you as a guard capibara? Why should they intentionally make you angry? This woman with a camera said "that's what we need to shoot, how he attacks". I know you are a friendly, loving animal, and, personally, I prefer seeing you with kids, where everyone loves everyons.

  • Caplin has his dark side. I don't want to hide things in these videos. We took Caplin all over the place today, 50 people must have pet him, and he was fine. But he hates Philip. If only I could get Philip to just sit and take it easy, but there is fear on both sides.

What the video doesn't show, because Coral got tired of taping, was that eventually Caplin let Philip feed and pet him. He acted much calmer. But he was still looking for an opening to attack.

  • Oh, Coral is visiting with you, that's great!

Now, my apologies: I must admit I did not understand what was going on. I remember that once Philip scared him, when Caplin was young, there was a video. So, now Philip is trying to make friends with him. Hope they will go along together!

  • caplin is the best animal on youtube!!

  • No offense, but whoever is taping strikes me as an idiot. You never want to agitate him, that will just lead to worse behavior! In my opinion, Phillip should be stationary with Caplin able to walk to him, and away from him, while on his leash. Phillip should also offer treats to Caplin and not be the one to squirt or correct him, as it just reinforces Cap's fear of him. I would also do it all in a neutral place that Cap doesn't feel inclined to protect, and I think using water,

  • which Cap LOVES, is confusing. It

s like rewarding AND punishing me with chocolate. Phillip should also never lean or tower over Cap, as that is very threatening and predatory. Phillip should basically be as non-threatening, and act like just a piece of furniture until Cap is comfy around him. I fear if you continue to do things in this way, you are going to do WAY more damage than help to your rodent king. Just my opinions. (Oh, and camera woman, rabbits are lagomorphs, and not rodent.)

  • We know rabbits are lagomorphs, that was a joke.

However, I admit this was not the best desensitizing situation. Having Philip sit down would have made Caplin more comfortable but Philip more nervous. Things calmed down more later but we didn't get video. Eventually Caplin let Philip give him treats but he was constantly looking for an opening to attack.

  • Any idea why he hates Carol?

  • We don't know why he hates Carol. She was staying with us for a few days. On the first day he loved her but halfway through the second day he attacked her and then acted pretty much the same way he does toward Philip.
