Things certainly would have turned out differently if he'd stayed away from heavy drugs. I remember reading about his desire to escape the depressing existence of his home town. But then I heard him in an interview saying that he'd been offered a couple of art scholarships in school, but he'd turned them down! That decision was probably as fateful as any, since he could have gotten out that way also. He'd probably be some cool artist/art teacher somewhere!
I think the shotgun he stuck in his mouth might have had more to do with his death than the drugs, who's to say that even if he never tried drugs he would have still killed himself as that Cross dude that wrote the book says there had been a history of suicide in Kurts family. Either way rest in peace Kurt its all about the music you left not how or why you died.

Drugs didn't do anything to Kurt, Kurt did it himself. He made the choice the first time he decided to shoot up, and he knew what could happen.
