Good question. There has certainly been an overall decline in good melodic hooks within pop songs generated by modern musicians.

Either the demand for it is less (i.e. people buy mostly hip hop/rap) or there is less talent (i.e. a decline in the human brain function). Or they are reflections of each other.

Not all, but most, modern music is junk. And this song isn't even close to the height of the Cure's talent.
