Sully man, I really need help, could you (or someone) tell me how to know if my guitar needs leveling and crowning, cause it just keeps buzzing no matter what I do! :S Thanks!! :D
9:08 you shouldn't throw your tools, they may turn from useful to useless. especially files, levels, bits etc etc. if it bends you're just left with a cheap recyclable material :)
@mdmccat If you haven't, watch the video prior to this one, as it will answer some of those questions. Mill and Bastard files are not the same, though; Mill files are finer.
Great video. I'm really looking forward to part 2. I see that you're using a 8 inch flat beam, would you recommend also getting a 16" or is 8 enough to the whole job? Thanks.
@jsullysix Fair enough. Do you have any advice for leveling a compound radius neck? I have a few of em that could do with a small leveling/crowning. Thanks
@1defec Sure, just follow the string path as you go and you'll be fine. Dan Erlewine has some great things to say about why that works, but it's a lot of geometry and formulas. Pick up his recent edition of Guitar Player Repair Guide if you haven't already; it's awesome.
a few thousand more views and im sure you'll get rid of the 15 minute limit per video I don't have it any more for example.
I have to look at a few frets on my next string change but no big deal for now 15-ish vecinity on a guitar I've played for more than 5 years it happens. 90% sure they're too high so its alright. You get the google adsense offer on all your videos offer though?
Nice tips for fretting, Sully! One thing I like to do that I'm sure you'll find very useful, is that I use as many different color sharpies as possible when marking my frets. It's prettier and much more funner that way....and, I didn't get enough coloring books as a kid, so now I can make up for that.
If you don't have a bunch of different colored sharpies, DON'T FRET!
@Speedabob couldn't tell without seeing where the straightedge rocks, but it's one of those two! :) Pretty sure I had 220 on the leveller. Thought I mentioned that in the video, but it may have been edited out due to youtube's time limit of 15 minutes.
Nice work Sully! One thing I think is worth mentioning...A tip I was given by Anthony at ACD guitars in the UK was not to drag things across the fretboard or the frets when working on them as you may inadvertently drag dust and metal filings under your blade/radius measure which may give you a false reading. I notice you didnt drag the blade across the frets, so I'm assuming you do the same, but some people out there may not realize. Looking forward to part 2!
After 4 minutes of talking about Wisconsin and his friends that make cloths, I just wanted to get the the actual meat of this video. You lost me.

@diegobo135 I would recommend taking your guitar to a qualified tech who can go over the guitar with you in person.

@seasonedtoker ...but if I stop throwing my router around the shop, how will it learn to behave itself. I throw them because I love them.

Is that C.C. DeVille on the poster back there by the drill press?

@jsullysix ah! the V guitar and the apparent bleached white hair made it look like CC from a distance.

diamond stones are great for fret leveling

@Semimentalman2 Yeah, been wanting to try those out!

So if you check the wood of the neck and it's not straight then you need to adjust the truss rod? correct?
Is a mill file and bastard file the same thing?
Do you take the tape off the 12th fret while leveling the rest of the frets?
Thanks so much for explaining this all!

Awesome :) I actually have a guitar with the frets 1 and 2 buzzing! I'm guessing the 2nd fret is too high? or too low?
Also, what grit was the levelling tool?

@jsullysix
The rock is on 1 2 and 3, it rocks side by side when its in the middle (2). going from 3 to 4 to 5 it doesn't rock at all, its just #2 that is high.
Also, If it helps, I've recently fixed the back of the neck of this guitar as it was cracked and hanging a little. would that be the problem?
Speedabob 4 months ago
@Speedabob the neck injury could be the catalyst to the fret issue. If you're spanning frets 1-3 and it rocks on 2, your high fret is 2.
jsullysix 4 months ago
@jsullysix
What can I do to fix this?
I found out it was actually fret 3, my bad, i put the rocker on fret 2 - 3 - 4 and it rocked .
1 - 2 - 3 is fine, does that mean #1 is too high too?
