  • Trey hit the nail right on the head. Especially about Steve. He doesn't get 1/16th of the credit he deserves.

  • Prog Genesis is awsome and one of the best bands ever. POP GENESIS OWE TO BE DESTROYED IN THE SAME PIT AS HANNA MONTANA AND OTHER UBBER SHITS

  • As punk fade to post punk (the most closely thing to prog punk or at least punk with prog spirit) many other genres were born, heavy metal took the visuals from many punk styles, the new wave took its minimalistic aproach, bands like the EARLY U2, the police or the dire strais feed from new wave. American Hardcore like black flag, husker du or minuteman were the offspring of punk. The Damned opened the doors to the gothic subculture and the late 80 albums from Black Flag or The Germs were the m

  • Punk never was a musical genre, it all started as garage rock with the Who the Kinks, New York Dolls and MC5. They were bohemians artist influenced by new york popart scene, in this scence they were like the progs heroes that mixed rock with classical, jazz and folk. Punk was a subculture like the hippies, the oposite side of the same coin. Both protested for an utopic socity, by peace or by riot, by comunities or by anarchysm. Punks created a new market with new necesities, malcom maclaren an

  • Not the departure of Gabriel or Hackett killed Genesis, they died like all the great prog bands (as well as the punk movement) by a diseae called 80's. That was the time of metal, new wave and hardcore. The great prog bands lost their songs to their egos, in "Works" ELP stoped being a band, Yes almost crumbled by fight s of their members but they produced the masterpiece "going for the one". Marillion continued (rip off) the legacy of gemesis while the band became a pop act with abacab

  • Where was Peter Gabriel?

  • 3:10, Phil doesn't look very pleased. :(

  • Eno just produced "Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging" not the whole Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album.

  • I liked the bong rip!! It added so much color and frisson to trey's speech! Good job taopauly

  • I thought eno only did one song on the lamb. The grand parade of lifeless packaging i think...

  • <3 bong

  • SEBTP is one of the finest albums I've ever heard. A true classic.

  • LOL@ bong rip @ 2:05. and LOL@ masternate for being offended...

  • gotta love those music nerd jokes.......yeah...13/4 time...i am cracking up over here!

  • Thank you for posting this! As a life-long Genesis fan, yet embarrassed by much of their 80's hits (and Phil Collins') it was so amazing to hear a respected musician such as Trey say something that I've felt for 25 years (shit, has it really been that long!) Nearly wept by the end. Thank you TREY. Love Phish too! If you're not familiar with the song "Stagnation" that Trey mentioned, check out the YouTube video I made: watch?v=2NIgfLCn9js in my THE DAILY VINYL project. Cheers!

  • @TheDailyVinyl Stagnation is a beautiful song!! ;)

  • Is Mike Rutherford like 6 feet 8 or something? Banks is at least 6 feet and Mike towers over him. It's about fucking time these guys were inducted and hence true "MUSIC" is given the spotlight for a brief moment. Shit bands and acts like Nickleback, Daughtry, Linkin Park, Puddle of Shit, Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Lil Bow Wow, and Creed and the majority of today's shit can FUCK THE FUCK OFF!!!!.....Oh yeah...FUCK YOU MTV!!!!!!YOU ARE A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ralphcat LOL!!!! THANK YOU! I AGREE!! ;)

Shit bands and acts like Nickleback, Daughtry, Linkin Park, Puddle of Shit, Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Lil Bow Wow, and Creed can PISS OFF!!!!.....Oh yeah...FUCK YOU MTV!!!!!!YOU ARE A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bong rip?

  • Jesus Christ, dude! You can't even lay off the bong until I am done watching. _Shakes Head_

  • I was only 2 when Selling England came out, but I know exactly what Trey's talking about... one of the greatest and underrated rock albums of all time!!!

  • i detect pot smoking in the background 0:39

  • It's quite sad that they need to "prove" that Genesis are "kewl" enough by referencing My Bloody Valentine and Radiohead. Genesis influenced great bands like Kansas and Marillion, but those bands aren't "hip" enough.for the RNRHOF. Also, like I said on another post, it would have been far better if Genesis had been inducted by FISH, rather than PHISH...

  • Nice....

  • Always been indifferent t/w Phish, but I must say, TREY HAS WON MY RESPECT. He captures how it feels to be moved by & to live w/Genesis's music & he does justice to their unique magic, alchemy & genius. He is 100% right that they never stopped doing challenging & mind-blowing things, even in the 80s & 90s, & his descriptions of Trespass & Selling England are SPOT ON. Genesis has always been about: songwriting, arranging, soul, heart, taste, intelligence, ambition & creative vision. Bravo, Trey!

  • Very nice speech. Best band ever.

  • I like the background bong toke noises...

  • trey just wishes people would analyze him more haha

  • Great speech for such a long awaited band,Thanks for getting in Genesis!!

  • Trey so 'gets it'.

  • Genesis, Rush, Phish, Radiohead, Talking Heads,Van Halen (OK, maybe not Van Halen) and punk rock are all great. There's plenty of room in the Hall. At least no one can be disqualified for using performance enhancing drugs.

  • @maccabee36: "Genesis, Rush, Phish, Radiohead, Talking Heads,Van Halen (OK, maybe not Van Halen) and punk rock are all great."

Right on. My two favorite bands are Genesis & The Sex Pistols. Who care's what "genre" it's supposed to be? That shit's just for record companies and journalists! & who cares what clique it meant you were a part of in London in 1977! Life's too short. When we find the good stuff, the stuff that inspires us, we have to celebrate it, etc. So, I heartily agree with you.

  • Bong hits. Nice.

  • Don't know what you dweebs are whining about...this is much easier to watch after doing a few rips i think every video should be shown in this new format Hail Hail taopauly btw i love this band i saw the Duke and Abacab Tours many moons ago They should have been in the Hall of Fame awhile ago

  • Whew !!

There are a lot of morons on here who clearly know NOTHING of the history of Genesis - yet choose to speak as if they do.

A bit of a recommendation for all : Never speak on any topic unless you know what you're talking about. It's pretty basic, though sadly rarely followed.

  • You guys are rough on Trey for a great speech. It must have been massive pressure to deliver this. I don't find it dreadful at all - it's a treat to hear someone praise Genesis, a band I also truly appreciate!

  • This is dreadfull

  • I'm not sure what's funnier here: the fact that you've clearly taken a video with your cell phone camera of the television set or that you then felt the need to upload it in 460p, so we get the primo viewing experience. LMAO!

    Funny stuff.

  • A very, very good speech

  • @pgolladay1

"He says '99% of the people who played prog-rock, lost their songs to their egos'. "

Which is completely true. Your argument regarding Gabriel and his costumes is a bit confusing. He wore costumes to a) combat his shyness and b) illustrate something about music.

  • @EuchridEucrow1

I probably did not serve my argument well with the Peter Gabriel comment. I believe Trey made a huge overgeneralization. It is really unclear what he is saying. Just how does one lose their songs to their egos? And what falls into the acceptable 1% range? So, Trey doesn't like Prog much. Well, I don't like Punk Rock much , but I understand that it still has value to others. Well, Gabriel got over his shyness, and I didn't need the costumes to enjoy the music.

  • Trey is very bervous-in awe of his heroes. If only there is something so he could relax, take the edge off before he went on, you know?

  • i wish i could really hear what they were saying instead of some douche hittin a bong

  • @masternate61 You can hear it, stop being such a whiney douche

  • @taopauly I totally agree about masturabate61 being a whiney douche.

  • Not attacking you - really. But, why tape it, upload it for viewers, while annoying us w/ your ridiculous commentary, etc..? No whining. Just curious, that's all. I'm analytical.

  • @taopauly Really. I think what he's hearing is his own residual meth pipe noise.

  • @taopauly Really. I think what he's hearing is his own residual meth pipe noise... smoker or not who's ever complained about the sound of a bong.

  • @masternate61 I HATE YOU AND GENESIS! GENESIS IS THE WORST BAND PHISH IS FOREVER GOING TO BE MORE EPIC THEN THEM! MUSIC FROM THE GENERATION OF GENESIS WAS OLD FART MUSIC! THE BEST MUSIC EVER MADE WAS THE BLACK EYED PEAS, ANYTHING RAP, AND TAYLOR SWIFT!

    no just kidding

  • @masternate61 I almost agreed with you, until I saw your douchey name. I'd rather hit the bong than agree with "masternate"

  • I like how you can hear the bong in the background.

  • Cool that Anthony Phillips and John Mayhew are among the first that he mentions. 2:12 "[Ant's] playing was so critical in creating the initial Genesis roadmap." Maybe neither were officially inducted (?) but at least they are given some due. Trey praises it all the eras but focuses on the early years. ...as it should be :-)

...What is it Phil say around 5:52?

  • Apocalypse in 9/8ths now there's rebellion!

  • trey-- wonderful introduction!! a true class act. phil looks like a stuck up jerk. and you can see what fame and time does to sincerity.

  • Why Phish?

  • If you read some of the back story behind Trey's compositional style, and listen to songs like "Reba" and "Fluffhead", you'll discover that Genesis has been a HUGE influence on Phish's music and Trey, by inducting Genesis into the HOF, pays back at least part of that debt he owes the band for working so much of their influence into his songs.

  • @mlester72 yea he sounds like the typical Genesis geek for sure, his singing is pretty wretched though

  • lol @ the bong rips. i was like where the fuck is that comin from? the ceremony? oh! its the filmer rippin a bong... nice!

  • It's so heartwarming to hear him speak about almost anything, especially music as he gets a little choked up...whether people like Phish or enjoyed the performance, he was one of the most open-hearted and intelligent people in that room I think.

  • Keep those mowing blades sharp...

  • The show will be rebroadcast on Sunday,March 21st @ 5;00 E.S.T. I love that he credited Ant & John Mayhew. Wonder if they receive doorstops too?

  • lol @ "such a geek"

  • Couldn't they have given him a microphone that was high enough so that he could speak standing up straight? Seems a basic minimum, I would have thought... :)

  • I often hum in 13/4 time

  • not many people talk about the music like this when inducting

  • He`s right about Steve`s playing, Eddie Van Halen wasn`t the first guitar player to do finger tapping, sorry guy`s.

  • man, that is a great speech. it gives more sense about the good and bad about prog rock and why genesis is one of the few bands to do it right. let's hope they put yes, rush, and roxy music in the hall. we need more art rock and metal in there.

  • How about E.L.P and Crimson?

  • king crimson definitely although i'm not sure about elp since they went way overboard by the mid-70s and gave reason to why prog-rock sucks. i like prog rock but it can be overblown and overly-pretentious.

  • Are you kidding, Rush almost completely destroyed rock back in the 70's, with their 30 minutes songs and long ass boring guitar solos that could make your ears bleed, 6 songs on an album and over indulgence in their playing, don't even get me started on geddy lee, thanks to A movement called punk, rock was saved from prog and also pop in the 80's

  • rush rules. they deserve to be in the hall. name a punk band aside from black flag, minor threat, bad brains, or any of the great hardcore acts that deserve to be in the rock hall. besides, the rock hall is a joke. i love punk but i also love prog rock. it all depends on what i'm in the mood for.

  • Great speech. This man knows what Genesis was about before "The Invisible Touch". Even Metal drummers like Mastodon's Bran Dailor and Danny Carrey of Tool cite Phil Collins' drumming as a major influence.

  • Love those strange bubbly noises - LOL!

Was that ripper for Trey or Genesis, or both? : D

  • hows that bong rip treating ya?

  • What came after the Genesis members thanked people onstage? Did they do a video montage of Genesis' career at all? If so I want to know where I can find that. Pissed I don't have the fuse network so I wasn't able to watch it.

  • What an insightful, thoughtul and genuine induction, in my opinion. Respect for recognizing one of your influence publically Trey, and this whole time I thought you were genius and your songwriting, playing and escapism via rock and roll music was comptely original. More evidence that I am more nieve than first suspected. Props to Red.

  • love the bong rips in the background Pauly, you're a good man

  • nice bingers dude... hahaha. a fine touch to the vid.

  • "For me it was Genesis thu high school, then Phish through college"

Similar here... Genesis from early middle school and high school. Phish came in mid high school and on from there... Just crazy to see my guy Trey introduce my fave band ever into the R&R HOF. Love it. Awesome effort Trey...

  • Longest Trey narration since 12-30-97 Harpua. Kidding, well done though. At heart Trey's not a hippie, just a big music nerd.... and Genesis is ice cream for that group.

  • horrible speech..."geek"....but i tough one. how can anyone rectify early genesis with later genesis...(nice bong sounds by the way)

  • why didn't put up Genesis speech Loser? phish Sucks

  • Because you didn't say please.

  • @HockeyBash Why not find it on your own instead of wasting time insulting people?

  • great. glad i wont see any pricks like you on summer tour

  • Trey, that was sweet. I too fell in love with the proggy Genesis as a young lad. For me it was Genesis thu high school, then Phish through college.

  • @6:12 was that the celebratory hit?

  • It's amazing to see just how many bands out there grew up listening to and being inspired by Genesis . . . and not just Peter Gabriel- or Phil Collins-era Genesis, but both of them together, every album as one long, unbroken string of amazing songwriting and musicianship. I really don't think many other bands can claim to have as much influence and total, unwavering admiration.

  • Man, Trey hit the nail right on the head. That was detailed, thoughtful, perfect. And he's dead on about Selling England by the Pound being the best album.

  • Wow he just summed up what i think of this band. Best ever!

  • is he reading from a teleprompter? its sounds like he's reading, not talking

  • What a fantastic introduction. Excellent job, Trey!

  • bingers!! thanks!

  • LOL- such a geek..geek jokes...bong hit.

I loved this speech- you know how heartfelt he was and the knowledge and love of the band was an amazing tribute.

  • lol geek jokes

  • @jimdaa20 I agree, best part of the video other then Trey's thoughtful analogy. BTW, What does that guy from Genesis say at the end? "Something much better then we used to do it" ???
