  • Symbolic cannibalism of the magical zombie.

    Yay.

  • Religion is like a software license agreement. People just click yes without reading it.

  • Illiterate people writing down stories? And what exactly would the other illiterate people who they were writing them down for do with them?

  • i was once christian, but reading the bible made me an athiest,

so many things that don't fit, demons, witches, unicorns and dragons...

then theres things like the flood which there is no evidence for,

and then you get to the idea of a loving caring god demanding slavery, animal cruelty, child sacrifice, the murder of entire towns, genocide, infanticide etc...

the god of the bible makes Voldemort and Darth Vader look warm and fuzzy.

  • Three religious questions that people seldom know are who do each of these religions worship? Buddhists Moslems Christians

  • @mentalphysicalism Buddhists don't worship any deity. Moslems worship god/Allah. Christians worship the trinity(the father, the son, and the holy spirit).

  • Of course ,Atheists are pragmatic, adaptable ,have done the reasearch , and are given to seeking truth through results produced while Religionists are bigoted, hypocritical and usualy have not read any religious text or any other metaphysical work in their life and only seek that their dogma be advanced.

  • An ignorant angry god raining shit down on people. Sounds like the USA.

  • @mogley52 STFU! you obviously think you are somehow scientifically informed. Too bad that you demonstrate a keen lack of knowledge regarding physics, history, logic and science in general. Poor religiously indoctrinated sheeple, why can't you accept that your thinking has been theologically impaired and just let the unindoctrinated SANE people help you see reason. Religion turns people into weak minded fools!

  • 3:17 "illiterate people writing down stories for other illiterate people." I thought illiterate people cannot read or write? This guys is stupid

  • @charli1775

    Listen to the part after.

  • I find it funny that people who do not believe spend so much time studing what they find false LOL! O well not my deal!

  • People who don't believe in god are mostly sane.

People who follow religion are delusional.

  • Atheist know whats in the Bible, but to eplain the meaning is very different and beyong most atheist.

  • He made a very important point about american idol. It's not that they don't know shit, it's that what they do know IS shit.

  • i love me some tobias

  • @cosmicgtr All studies, every survey, all work done on the subject have shown that the less religious people are, the higher their IQ is and their level of education. In general that's what you always see in such studies. One relevant example: Among the members of the National Academy of Science, less than ONE percent answered in a survey that they believe in a god. Those guys are the smartest of the smartest, virtually:)

  • @winterstellar im looking for a youtube video to explore the relationship between religion and IQ. Cause i find it odd that such a study is even done to begin with. We have YET to come to a conclusion about race and intelligence, so throwing in religion just further muddies the entire issue.

  • @ikcjjtt "Race"..? Im guessing you're american...? Culture or ethnicity or social backgrounds are words used in "european",but you still use the ancient "race".. Am I right, are you american? Never mind, the question was about studies on the correlation between education, knowledge, IQ etc , and religion/non-religion. Just wiki for instance*correlation between religious belief and intelligence* .There have been hundreds of studies through the decades,(one just weeks ago on knowledge of religion:)

  • @winterstellar Haha! I think it was the PEW study, by the way.. (I didn't check which video I was at before now, hehe. Cheers!

  • @winterstellar my point was these religionous studies make very little sense of thier correalations if you wiki race and intelligence. There have been a huge amount of studies done on race and intelligence, and no conclusive evidence has been found for the cause. So if we just add in religion in the place of race, we are just confusing people even further. There is a distince difference in the IQ between the "races"-ancient or not its still there. And no consensus as to why.

  • @ikcjjtt It is cultural, at least to 99,9percent. The most religious countries also have the least proper schools, the most illiteracy and the most sermons and preaching. A kid stands a smaller chance of growing up to be an Einstein in such environments.

  • @winterstellar But I have been thinking about a funny, non-scientific "theory" of mine lately. The least intelligent nations are the sub-saharan ones, and they have 0 percent neanderthal DNA. My idea/hunch/"theory" was that the interbreeding with neanderthals was beneficial. The neanderthals were dumber but had bigger brains, so their brains' "wiring" couldn't have been as good as our homo sapiens' What I've been thinking is that the hybrids maybe got the combination of bigger AND better brains?

  • @winterstellar Have you read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond? I think it will answer your question.

  • @sgreen71778 No, I haven't. I have a book store service on my smartphone with a quite extensive library/selection of books...maybe I'll find it there? Thanks, anyway:)

  • I'm an atheist, but I thought this was sort of silly:

"Illiterate people writing down stories for other illiterate people"

  • @cosmicgtr we dont think we know more, we know we know more.:)

  • @cosmicgtr And now we have the test to show that we actually do.

  • want to know how to put atheist's, Christians, and just about every other religion together? Start talking about Scientology.

  • What are those agnostics, atheist or theist???

  • @M3t4lManiac Theist: a person that believes in one of the theistic religions meaning Christianity, Judaism or Islam (aka the Abrahamistic religions)

Atheist: a-theist, or a non-religionous person. General term: one who doesn't believe in God or gods or any supernatural.

Agnostic: one that does not know. He doesnt think the bible is enough evidence, but that doesnt mean that God isnt there.

  • @toverkleet You've got it wrong. Agnosticism deals with knowledge, an agnostic doesn't claim to know whether god(s) exist or not. Atheist disbelieve all gods, not just the Abrahamic one and it has got nothing to do with belief in the supernatural in general. A theist is one that believes in at least one god. An agnostic can both be a theist and an atheist (you are one of those like it or not). Most theists are strong theists i.e. they claim to know there's a god and most atheists are agnostic.

  • @M3t4lManiac No, I have had a long course of Ethics and why Ethics only exists without religion, given by an author that has written an entiry book about atheism, theism and agnostics. And it was a researched book, not just some opinion written.

  • @toverkleet I don't much care. This is wrong: "Theist: a person that believes in one of the theistic religions meaning Christianity, Judaism or Islam (aka the Abrahamistic religions)"

This is wrong: "Atheist: a-theist, or a non-religionous person. General term: one who doesn't believe in God or gods or any supernatural."

This is somewhat correct: "Agnostic: one that does not know. He doesnt think the bible is enough evidence, but that doesnt mean that God isnt there."

  • @cosmicgtr We DO know more. We explore all religions and come to the conclusion that they're all preposterous. We also expand our horizons for when we debate with religious people, which frankly isn't needed most of the time since religious people barely know shit about their own religion anyway.

Nowadays, religion is something you adopt and are born into because of your parents and family. So, you accept it. You do not question or explore it. Thus, the ironic incompetency of religious people.

  • @adrianaesque How would you explain that 100 of thousands even millions of people have converted to other religons then ? they were born with a religion but did not accept it. im sorry but your comment makes no sense.and i cannot believe that you have explored other religions enough or you would not be calling them preposterous.

  • @adrianaesque hey, hey. be nice to the religious people, they'll tell god on you. :P

  • This isnt weird at all, the more religious writings you read, the less sense it makes

  • I messed up some easy questions. But I still score higher than the believers.

  • i love how only the athiests are the ones commenting. I'm pretty sure the majority of that percent of those smart atheists know to keep their mouths shut talking about shyt thats being talked here. also im pretty sure the majority of the ones here aren't really that smart.

  • @Reallaty Just going by your spelling and grammar I would venture as to guess that your not the brightest bulb yourself.

  • @falconer6439 lol ive heard that one so many times thats its funny now. my grammar and spelling is fine when im not commenting. bad way to judge people btw. and no im not dumb if thats what you mean, im probably gonna make more than the average "atheist". or average anyone lol

  • @Reallaty You show how truly intelligent you are. Are you really proposing that intelligence is in any way related to income? I would love to see that argument explained. That would crack me up.

  • @falconer6439 I know intelligence isn't directly related to income. You say that intelligence is in no way related to income. Really? So dummer and more ignorant have the same chance of higher income than more intelligent people?

  • @Reallaty "dummer"? Really? You have to be a troll. Yes considering how much depends on opportunity. If indeed you are " gonna make more than the average "atheist". or average anyone lol", you are my point exemplified.

  • @Reallaty Look at Bill O'Reilly, He's an idiot, yet he makes WAY more than most people who are much more intelligent than him.

  • @falconer6439 You're right- intelligence isn't "in any way related to income," which is why my dog regularly out-earns me. He really stretches out that 15 IQ of his. But seriously, how could you think that income is *not* at least moderately correlated with income? Many high paying professions are, to be blunt, off limits for idiots. If you are less intelligent than average, what are your chances of getting through med school, law school, or some other equivalently difficult grad school?

  • @jetboyJ22 Yes, people that make it through those kinds school are generally fairly intelligent, yes they make a decent wage. But by your logic a CEO would almost certainly be more intelligent than a heart surgeon. What I am saying is that real comprehensive intelligence is not rewarded monetarily. That cant be argued with when you look peoples wages in the field of science compared to corporate big wigs, actors, radio/tv personalities, etc.

  • @falconer6439 I think you are missing the broader picture - in any given field, smarter people are more able to be productive, and thus will likely be paid more. Certain career paths are bound to make less money than others regardless of intelligence, but if the scientist in your example wanted money, he could have been an excellent CEO himself. A person with an average or below average intelligence could be neither a scientist nor a successful CEO. I never said the correlation was perfect.

  • @Reallaty Yes......I'm a troll, let's just leave it at that. Just to let you know I usually end up in arguments when I comment on videos about topics that attract ignorant and hateful people. That means something.

  • @Reallaty said "Yes......I'm a troll"

    Spoken like a true hero!

  • @OrthodoxDarwinist supposed to be sarcastic but okay?

  • @Reallaty

Yeah I was just playing with you, just like I play with my willy.

  • @Reallaty Not really. I don't even know why this attempt at an argument is relevant.

Anyways, trying to convince yourself that non-believers do not know more about religion than religious people by saying the ones commenting are stupid, because

    a) believing in a religion IS stupid

    b) the people commenting on the video are independent of the survey, and thus do not reflect the percentages and statistics

I'm Atheist and have read multiple religious texts, unlike actual religious people.

  • If you love your religion, study it.

  • Atheists see through religious bullshit as clear as day. Religion clouds the mind.

  • @BiblePreacher889

Again. No idea what you're talking about.

I didn't mean learning about their religion per se. But learning about history is often more then enough(a personal interest of me)

  • @BiblePreacher889 heh... Neither. And why would you ask an Atheist this? "Faith" is irrelevant. it's belief without proof. I could have all the faith in the world invisible flying pink unicorns exist, but that isn't going to make it true. It doesn't matter how many have "faith" in the same thing. 5000 years ago millions believed Zeus and the other Greek gods were real. Didn't make them anymore real then, than the god of the Bible is today.

  • @BiblePreacher889

I have no idea what you're talking about.

  • People who were religious aren't anymore because of their knowledge about their religion.

Atheists who never were religious just see religion as such good comedy they learn it while laughing at it.

  • Atheists will inherit the world, we will be working with stem cells while others will be picketing abortion clinics. We will be cloning and gene splicing while others will deny evolution. We don't need superstitions such as religion anymore

  • Atheists, like myself, have a need to find our own answers in life. We are far more open to new ideas and information. We don't ignore or deny factual evidence and we do study other religions (if anything to defend ourselves from religious nutcases). One of the main reasons we are Atheist is because we HAVE read the Bible and COMPREHEND what it's saying. We love learning about the universe we live in. We want, and seek knowledge, you know the old saying, "the more you know..."

  • @Defiant47

"One of the main reasons we are Atheist is because we HAVE read the Bible and COMPREHEND what it's saying."

But the most conservative Christian groups, the Mormons and white Evangelicals, knew it the best, so it's not a completely consistent relationship. I guess you could say knowledge of the bible polarizes people into either rejecting it or becoming conservative in your religion (assuming there is a causal relationship in that direction)

  • hahaha "illiterate people writing down stories for other illiterate people to read" really dave....? Come on man I love arrested development think before you speak haha

  • i LOLed so hard when the results of that poll came out. i went to school that morning feeling pretty good about myself, not gonna lie.

  • Well I just did the 15 question quiz and got 14/15, I thought nirvana was a hindu concept not buddhist :( Oh well I am still more knowledgeable than the vast majority of religious people!

  • Sometimes it is the case that people become atheists because they know more about religion. But I think often times, when you become an atheist, you tend to do explore other religions. Also, you read more books written by atheists, and those books contain debunking of many religions.

  • God damn Americans are fucking stupid! If a virus was released that killed stupid people, only about 600 of us would be left.

  • The study doesn't show your ascertian to be true. How do u know they didn't learn more about other religions because they are atheists? Part of being an atheist is debunking religions. I would think you learn about other religions just by being an atheist.

  • Ha Ha Ha tidus.jpg

  • Know thine enemy...

  • Jeffrey Dahmer liked eating people too... guess that's why he was attracted to Christianity and having a bite of Jesus as a born-again in prison!

    =3

  • So what is his religion?

I knew Maher was anti-religious, but him I never was sure. I know he was raised Unitarian.

  • "Hurrr I know about religion because I'm religious duuuurrrr"

I'm guessing that is what they think about themselves

  • The more you know about different religons the more it becomes obvious that none of them could be true

  • Most religions rely on the faithful not thinking. If their congregations actually thought and questioned the religious clergy would be out of a job. Non believers usually know their bible and it does not take an Einstein to see that it is absolutely wrong in the very first chapter. So wrong that it is useless as a text book for life.

This survey should be no surprise to anyone who thinks and must be a great comfort to the clergy who know they are doing a really good job of hiding the facts.

  • @Euphobia2

Unfortunately, your theory doesn't hold up. If you look at the details of the Pew Survey, questions dealing with religion only, Mormons and Evangelicals did better than atheists. In other words, the more religious you are, the more you THINK.

  • @jtravis282 I had a look at the pew study the actual results are atheist/agnostic :20.9 ,Jewish:20.5,Mormon:20.3,white evangelicals:17.6,white catholic:16.0,white mainline protestant:15.8,nothing in particular:15.2, blk protestant:13.4,and hispanic catholic:11.6 thats directly from the website

  • @krissy4nik Look at the breakdown by Bible knowledge only. Mormons and Evangelicals scored highest. This contradicts the contention that the more you know the Bible, you will tend to become atheist. This is why you can't trust the leftist media. All too often when I check the facts, I find serious flaws. The Pew Survey is just another example of how atheists and the media grossly misinterpreted the results.

  • @jtravis282 Mormons and "white" evangelicals did the best in biblical knowledge. They are also amoung the most likely of christian sects to be college educated. If "christianity" fell under one catagory the average would be much lower. That just as dishonest as saying its a poor reflection on christianity by only looking at the scores of the two lowest sects .

  • @krissy4nik But if the atheist argument is that the more you know about the Bible the more likely you are to be an atheist then I would expect all Christian sects to score lower than atheists including Mormons and Evangelicals. By the way, atheists are coming to that conclusion based on the scores of the entire survey which includes subjects not related to Biblical knowledge. Certainly that is flawed logic.

  • @jtravis282 There is a direct association between knowledge in all areas and college study. That aside christianity as a whole did worse on biblical knowledge specifically than atheism/agnosticism. To say that the more you know about religion the less religious you are is a general statement. There are going to be situationswhere that isnt the case but as a rule of thumb it is supported in the study...bottom line

  • @krissy4 The problem with that general statement is that the Christians that happen to be the most religious(Mormons/Evangelicals) know more about Bible knowledge than all other groups that are far less religious(atheists, mainline Protestant, etc.). Doesn't that contradict the more you know about the Bible the less religious you are?

  • @jtravis282 Do you have any evidence to support your statement that mormons and white evangelicals are more religious than other christian sects? As I said previously keep in mind that those two groups are more likely to college educated and a college education is directly related to knowledge in all areas including religious knowledge.

  • @krissy4nik Another Pew Poll called US Religious Landscape study. Under Belief in God with absolute certainty Mormons/Evangelicals scored highest of all sects except Jehovah Witnesses.

  • @jtravis282 The study you are referering to breaks up the sects differently. The poll about religious knowledge shows "white" evangelicals scoring amoung the best. The belief poll is evangelical churches which is more inclusive the includes pentecostals (which are very religious) , assembly of god,and etc . It reflects positively on the mormon church but again mormons are more likely to be college educated. You didnt mention the various sects that did well in belief and very poorly in knowledge.

  • @krissy4nik also i forgot the mention the sample size for the various groups is very skewed.

  • @krissy The most educated is Mainline Protestant, see Education Level by Religious Tradition, also by Pew. Even though Mainline is the most educated of the Protestant groups and more educated than Mormon, Mainline did the worse when it came to Bible knowledge. As I recall, only Black Churches were the exception, that is they scored high in belief but not well in Bible knowledge. But Black Churches still scored higher than Mainline even though Black Churches were far less educated than Mainline.

  • @jtravis282 The Jews know the Bible the best I would say, well at least the first half of it :) It is their book after all.

  • @Cougar139tweak Would you agree the most religious Jews(Orthodox, Hasidics) know more about the Bible than less religious Jews(atheists,Reformed)? Yes or No?

  • @jtravis282 I would tend to think knowledge about a 2000 year old fairytale is nothing to get to proud of in the first place. However in order to critique something you must first study it.

  • @Cougar139tweak As I have proven, those who study it more are believers. Perhaps atheist ignorance is keeping them from seeing the obvious. and the truth.

  • @jtravis282 You have proven? yeah that's it, ignorance... read the story of Jephthah's daughter. Honestly this is all I need in order to question this garbage along with Abraham potential sacrifice of Issac to GOD. Listen to the voices.....you guys are nutjobs.

  • @Cougar139tweak Get some comprehension skills, read what I wrote again. Then apologize to me. Have a nice day.

  • @jtravis282 You're actually wrong on this one, you've got it completely backwards. The fact that atheists know more about religion is probably what brought them to be atheists in the first place. The "flock" doesn't really know much about their religion at all other than what they've been told. Those who have studied the religions of the world quite frequently realized how absolutely absurd they are.

  • @trippinlikegod I completely disagree with you. If you go to the Pew website it gives you a breakdown of each category of the survey and how different denominations performed. Two groups did better than atheists in the Bible knowledge category, Mormons and Evangelicals. If you think atheists became atheists because they knew more about the Bible, then you centainly can't come to that conclusion from the Pew Survey.

  • @jtravis282 You are looking at Bible knowledge specifically, I said religions of the world, there are in fact more than the Christian ones.

  • @trippinlikegod The survey didn't get into doctrinal issue of other religions. Certainly you are not claiming that because someone knows Islam is the predominate religion of Indonesia, or Maimonides was Jewish would cause a religious person to become a atheist.

  • @jtravis282 I am claiming that your average atheist has a better understanding of the religions of the world than your average religious person, this study confirms that. A quiz such as this cannot go through every page of every holy book and ask every imaginable question. It is simply a yard stick used to determine what groups have more broad knowledge relating to religious study. I can claim from the knowledge I have of many atheists they do in fact know significantly more about religion.

  • i dont consider myself an expert on religion and I dont need to be in order to be atheist. just as adults dont need to be experts on the history of christmas to disbelieve in the existence of santa claus. however, im not surprised by the results of this vid

  • Mao killed because of his personal philosophy of Maoism. Stalin killed because of his personal philosophy of Stalinism. God kills because of his personal philosophy of Theism. In all cases we see that people kill based off of their own ideas. If you want to calculate the numbers of death tolls I guarantee you that noone compares with the amount of dead souls God has sent to suffer eternal torment. God is the #1 mass murderer!!!!!!!

  • How baked is David Cross in this lol

  • So if you know the reason for the results of this survey. Realize that it by itself doesn't help the 'non-believer cause' (Ugh... Yeah I know that's about as stupid as saying the 'non-stamp collector cause' but you know what I mean). Because here in Norway, most young people are atheist. And they don't know squat about religion either. So check out the statistics on scientists instead. Because that is much more profound.

  • ...because religious people are idiots!.... (this is the answer to all of his questions)

  • As an atheist, this is nothing new to me.

One of the primary reasons that atheists become who they are is due to their knowledge of religion. The more they investigated, the more they realized how many idiotic tenets and downright fallacies exist within scripture. So its no surprise that they gravitate away from that.

  • Atheism is an intellectual pursuit. Many religious people know about their own faith and it's doctrines. The vocal atheist necessarily has a broader understanding as the 'coin of the realm' comes in many denominations (pun intended)

  • I wish Keith could of gotten another atheist for this fascinating topic, no offense to david but he wasnt very eloquent

there are much better and quicker ways to address this point

  • We're not religiously literate because we're atheists. We're atheists because we are religiously literate.

  • See, this is why atheists are superior to everyone else in all ways.

  • @getinmyvanlilchild Start being cocky and having ideas above your station, and you'll sink to those "inferior" people's level, easy. Just sayin'.

  • Evangelicals have a slight edge on atheists when it's the Bible specifically, but when you start adding multiple religions the atheists do best. Atheists can dissect all religions because we have no investment in a home team.

  • illiterate people writing down stories? Is this guy for real?

  • @thorkyll It was a joke. He's a comedian. Religion is one of his favorite topics.

  • They should have put on the mormon test "if you're black and you believe hard enough you'll turn white"

The answer is yes, although they don't really talk about that anymore.

  • @ScaryGuy255

Well I'm half black, so I guess my ancestors fought with Eloheem but took to many smoke breaks.

  • I'm sure protestants aren't too proud of Martin Luther, they have probably gone to great lengths to keep his name as far out of the church as possible so they won't find out their faith was started by an insane bigot.

  • I have all my knowledge on religion from my own research. A religious person would tell me something, and I would go look it up. I would hear an argument about evolution, or the age of the earth, or whatever, and I would find out the real answers doing my own research.

And actually reading most of the bible.

  • It's too obvious, the more you know about religions the less likely will be that you keep believing in god.

This survey now serves as evidence to believers that they don't really care about the details of their religion, all they care about is their faith= (Not thinking)

  • people don't make any sense to me.

  • The word illiterate is primarily defined and most commonly used to mean: unable to read and write. But secondary or sub-defintions have it as: lacking an adequate or good level of ability with language or a good education, etc. The -il-prefix attached to any word tends to mean low level or inadequate, and not complete abscence. Many times an apparently wrong use of a word might actually be correct according to subdefinitions. Also, anyone who is familiar with David Cross will know he isn't.......

  • ...isn't dumb. Also people adapt words and they get used in a colloquial sense. I think that has happened to -illiterate- where it's primary defintion is becoming what was the sub. I might be wrong about the tendency of how the - il- prefix is applied, but nevertheless, -il- doesn't necessarily mean complete absence of complete opposite of the root word. Sorry if this seems an excessive defense of the usage, so I'll just post what one dictionary has:• 1) not able to read or write, 2).....

  • ..1).•not able to read or write

2)•ignorant: uneducated in the fundamentals of a given art or branch of learning; lacking knowledge of a specific field; "she is ignorant of quantum mechanics"; "he is musically illiterate"

3)•lacking culture, especially in language and literature

    Source: wordnetweb/princeton/edu

  • How can illiterate people write down stories?

  • @freedomsfart LOL, I said the same thing as I was watching this.

  • I got 13/15. Raised as a Protestant, but now I just don't care. I've got bigger things in life to worry about.

  • I love David, but he fucked up twice here.

    ...

    a) illiterate people don't write

    b) jews (the oldest religion listed) knew more than the rest

    .

That aside, I'm not surprised by this poll at all. I took the 15 question quiz and got 100%. The more you know about religion (and/or the bible) the more likely you are NOT to believe it.

  • @freedom0speech I agree. They should have had the president of American Atheists instead of him. I love his comedy, but he really bombed it.

  • @freedom0speech It holds true within Christianity, and I think historical and cultural reasons go some way to accounting for the Jews' better knowledge on these matters. I'd certainly say, at the least, that an insular religion will have more knowledgeable adherents than a bring-everyone-into-the-fold religion.

  • @freedom0speech

"The more you know about religion (and/or the bible) the more likely you are NOT to believe it."

    e

That may fit into your prejudices conveniently (what's more helpful than a test showing Christian ignorance), but the study suggests otherwise, in fact those that knew the bible the best are the conservative Christians: "On questions about the Bible and Christianity, the groups that answered the most right were Mormons and white evangelical Protestants."

  • @afeeder Of course people who seriously study the bible and whatnot will know more, this was a random survey. That is like saying a physics professor outscored a factory worker on a quiz about general relativity. The point is that your random atheist knows more about various religions than your random religious person.

  • Comment removed

  • Many atheists, like myself, were once religious. So it is not surprising that we would know more about religion, because we took the time to investigate and learn, and not just listen to what our pastor cherry-picked to tell us on Sunday.

  • @Feredir28 100 % agreed.Very well put. That's why most atheists are well atheist, they did the research and did like what they saw.

  • @Bystronicman08 - do you mean "didn't" like what they saw?

  • @Heathiecliff Yes i did mean didn't,i mis typed my fault.

  • @Feredir28 you god damned blasphemer.

  • @Feredir28 I was once religious, in the sense I was in religious ed. when I was young. Not bragging or anything, but I never really bought into religion. I never took it seriously, it always seemed kind of, storyish for lack of a better word. I don't know If I ever believed in god. But yeah, once I actually started looking deep into the bible, I found out alot of weird shit that they don't show 6 year olds in cartoons about talking trees like I watched, and it made me more atheistic.

  • @Feredir28 pretty much.

  • The survey was mostly questions that were non-doctrinal. For example, Supreme Court rulings on religion, dominate religion of a country, or history of another religion. None of these have to do with what is taught by a Pastor. This survey doesn't tell you if an atheist knows more than a practicing Christian on matters relating to the doctrines of Christianity. Unlikely atheists do. To suggest the more you know, the more you are likely to be atheist based on this survey is an absurd conclusion.

  • @jtravis282 2 questions were about court rulings, history of religion is important to include, but there were questions about certain doctrines, such as Job, the Eucharist, etc. Pastors do indeed talk abut the history of religion and religions around the world. And this survey does show atheists know more

Absurd? I dont think so. Nearly every atheist I know was brought up religious, and most leading atheist in America when asked what book they recommend people to read, they say "Read the Bible."

  • @Feredir28 So knowing that Indonesia is predominately Muslim and teachers are not allowed to lead prayers in public schools somehow made you realize atheism is the way because your cherry-picking Pastor did not tell you things like this?

  • @jtravis282 Simply seeking knowledge and exploring religions is what made me aware of such things like law and Islam, but that is not what leads to atheism. A great tool that leads to atheism is the Bible, which I thought I made that clear in my last comment. Knowing about the stories in the bible, its tenets, its rituals, etc. and seeing how absurd and ridiculous it all is, that leads to atheism.

  • @Feredir28 That was my point. This survey wasn't specific to Bible knowledge(tenets, stories, doctrine, etc.). These are the things u say that lead you to atheism. Too many unrelated questions about history, law, beliefs of other religions, demographics, etc. That's why I said it is absurd to come to that conclusion. I doubt atheists know more about things related specifically to Christianity and the Bible than say Evangelicals who are deeply religious.
