@TheLinemaniac Dude I'm 18 the same shits happening to me. What you got to say is fuck them and enjoy this type of music there's no shame in likeing jazz. Keep enjoying this stuff.
I enjoy this song and video, but what is up with all the over the top smiling? I'm betting this performance was a sign of the times....if you catch my drift...
lol~ That guy @ :22 is like "Wait 'til you hear what this guy has to say..." Then, @ :35, he comes back again like "Yep. She played him for some other guy. Wonder who that might've been..." lol XD
This man was a great performer. He did the moon walk before Michael Jackson was even a thought in his parent's eyes. He swung blues and jazz like da Vinci slapped paint onto canvas.
Princess, I'm glad you like this. It means you have an open mind to all styles of music, and appreciate American music history. We have an amazing history.
You know what breaks my heart? Knowing there are obnoxious jerks who can't stop offending the Black American community every chance they can. This is awesome music, and I don't like the racist remarks about music, and especially about the music.
@ipt09 its a good old nigger song? But yet more white people like it and listen to it than blacks? Hyymm? So i guess you're a nigger yourself then? Dumbfuck
A friend of mine once bought Cab Calloway's greatest hits coz he loved this song. Trouble was, every other track was exactly the same as this but with different lyrics. Talk about a one-trick pony!
"she messed arond with a bloke named SMOKEY.even though he was COKEY!,he took her down to china town and showed her how to kick that (OPIUM) gong around"!!!!!then...she had a dream about the king of sweden (REFERENCE TO HEROINE USAGE)! i love this song, how did they get away with recording songs about hard drugs? lol.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hell yeah he has to smile real hard (cheezin'). that was the way us blacks had to act if we wanted to be performers or anything else for that matter. white folks wasn't no joke back then. wasn't no racist comments online or in the privacy of ones home. it was in our face and in the streets.
Don't be so bitter man. This is art, Cab was a great performer. There were in all the times and everywhere singers who added some comedy to their shows, white and Black. Chaplin was white and british for instance. Art has no color.
Very true man. Im a young man (17) who loves the sound of jazz. I know the problems blacks faced, but I feel music had only brought people together. I listen to any thing from Glenn Miller to The Lonious Monk. Art has no color
I'm not bitter. The artistry is great. I'm just stating' the facts. ain't no Chaplin had to eat his food in the kitchen, come in through the back door. his only option of enjoyment WAS the performance.
lol Cab Calloway wrote a lot of songs about weed, cocaine, opium (kick the gong around), etc. but he never did any of it... except one night he smoked a joint before a performance, and he fell off the stage!
Have just been watching Hugh Laurie in his role as Bertie Wooster singing this. I didn't know it was a real song - I thought P J Wodehouse had written it for the book. lol
I think the piano part of Wooster was made for the series (because one of Hugh Laurie's many talents is playing piano) and so they got alot of songs from the time period. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
@dal4018 Like it or not, stuff like Rock and Metal, even Pop in SOME cases, are 'real' music. The only time it's not 'real' is when the instruments aren't recorded live, or in other words, just produced on a computer.
@punk9999643 It maybe but this came wayyyyyy before rock and metal agree with you most music today the computer is used instead of actual musical instruments
You're not alone. I'm 18 and I wish I was born anytime from the turn of the century (so I could be a flapper in the 20s) to the era during which Buddy Holly was around. I adore the 1920s-1960s.
Well, it is a song about drugs. Smokey is described as "cokey" (a cocaine user) and "kick the gong around" is a reference to smoking opium, sold in the Chinese sections of major cities.
On second thoughts it could just be the films were so old they had to vut it like that. Jazz package was awsome for old jazz stuff, very odd videos though check out Fats Walla he was brilliant and very funny.
I have an answer, there used to be a show on UK tv called Jazz package late at night and they used to cut the songs up to make them fit the programme I think because there was alot of this kind of hmmm intresting editing and this video was one of them.
