I can't speak about other countries, BUT-- this guy's Canadian, I'm Canadian. In Canada, we need to present a piece of ID to get take a plane or the train. And if you don't have ID, you present a passport. When I was just in China, I heard Chinese people also need to have ID to buy a train ticket. I'm assuming the man didnt have a Chinese ID, so a passport is logical. It shouldn't be a surprise to him.
