@GOin4jaPAN1 Wow, you're pretty set on doing the Japan thing. I think if you can do a year of college in Japan, that is probably the best way to start. You'll get a feel for the country and it will be much easier to study Japanese while you're living here. Then, you can decide after that if you really want to live here or not.

Ya know, just because you don't know someone, a "stranger", does not mean that person is evil! I like what Kermit said in his movie - "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet". :D I think "stranger danger" is blown way out of proportion. Yeah, it's a tough balance. I'm sure 98% of the people Nina might encounter are well-intentioned, friendly people, but as a father, the idea that she might run into someone from the other 2% is just too horrifying to contemplate. So, we have to make general rules like she should never go anywhere with a stranger etc. On the other hand, I'm all for her meeting lots of people and making new friends in a safe environment.

Yeah, I guess since I always use English with her and her mother speaks Japanese with her, it is natural for her to respond to both of us in our native languages, though she still uses Japanese with me if it's something she doesn't know how to say in English.

I had a 段ボールハウス when I was at Nina's age too. It was the box for our new fridge and even bigger than Nina's. My father also put a window and even put some wall papers around the box.
