And how would the criminal gangs get the guns? If nothing else it would be harder for them to obtain them, and with any luck gun crime would go down. It is possible that the US is already past the point of returning now though.

As it stands even, if a gang member has a firearm, and a civilian has a firearm, the first to shoot will be the one with the most confidence, the one who set out to shoot in the first place. Not the person scared and fumbling for his life.

If more guns mean more murders then why did North Dakota only have TWO murders for the entire year? And neither of them were killed by guns. Both were stabbings. And in Vermont where you dont even need a permit to carry a handgun there was only 17 murders for the whole year.

I don't think Britain has a high crime rate at all. Outside of London and Essex we're actually pretty much living the life. Maybe that's just because I live in the Yorkshire moors, but I've never witnessed crime in Leeds, or Darlington despite them both having a reputation everyone feels pretty safe.

North Dakota and Vermont are sparsely populated, which is probably why there's little crime.

Vermont has less population than Leeds, and only 3 people were killed in Leeds last year.

An article by the telegraph says that the crime rate is 2,000 per 100,000 people in the UK.

FBI stats says 454.5 per 100,000 people in the US. Our violent crime rate has been decreasing since 1990 even as the number of guns and people have increased.

The problem with crime in my country is because of illegal drug gangs. If drugs were at least decriminalized Im sure crime would decrease dramatically, crime is also HEAVILY concentrated in inner cities where these gangs are.

The US has a non-gun murder rate higher than many European countries TOTAL murder rate.Crime creates a demand for guns, not the other way around. In Switzerland, where EVERYONE has guns(And FULLY automatic rifles in many homes because of military service) , the homicide rate is MUCH lower because they do not have these crime problems as the US does. Its not the guns, its the culture. The UK had a lower homicide rate than the US even before strict gun control laws.

And guns ARE legal in the UK, but not handguns. You can own a rifle or shotgun. A bolt action, lever action, single action rifle (or pump action or semi-automatic but it can only be a .22)to own a shotgun thats a double or single barrel break action shotgun with a barrel at least 24in long you dont even need a reason to get a shotgun cert. but for a pump action or semiauto shotgun or breakbarrel shotgun with less than 24in you need to get (as with rifles) a firearms cert and a reason to own it.

Guns aren't legal in the sense that anyone can buy them. The certificate is very hard to obtain. And with handguns not being sold at all, there's no way you could easily conceal one on the way to commit a crime.

In the US, you still need to pass a criminal background check, felons and people who are mentally ill are prohibited from buying firearms. (This is FEDERAL law, state laws vary) Which I have NO problem with (In fact, I think it should be harder to get a gun) and you're right about handguns. Rifles and shotguns aren't concealable, and rifles of ANY kind were used in only 2.6% murders for the whole year. Misuse of handguns is much more of a problem.

by federal law I mean states need to do AT LEAST that. Also federal law, that sawed off shotguns and short barreled rifles and fully automatic weapons are STRICTLY regulated, you have to do a bunch of stuff to own one. And NO new fully automatic weapons have been made for CIVILIAN use since 1986, theres only been 2 murders with a legally owned fully automatic and one was a crooked cop that used a DEPARTMENT ISSUED MAC11 to kill a police informant.

Since then I've learnt Japanese, lived and worked in Japan for over a year, on returning I bought a nice sized flat back in London with my girlfriend who moved over with me from Osaka, learnt a new musical instrument (my 4th; guitar, drums, keys, sanshin). As for this week I've been helping tourists sightsee in London as part of my work, but enjoying every second (especially taking Fins to the local pubs). Life is fast... and I still think guns are bad.

Anyway, my point was essentially that if we all just lived out our lives to the maximum, without any need for guns, would we miss them? Obviously not, and would the world have less crime and homicide without guns? Obviously, yes. So, why are they legal?
