In Ecclesiastes, where it says "vanity of vanities. all is vanity.", in Hebrew the word used in place of vanity is הבל ("Hevel").
It was also the name of Kane's brother in Genesis, Abel.
it means "breath", or "vapour". and according to my theology teacher in school, the word is a symbol for things which are quick and meaningless, like a humans breath.
