  • I love this movie epsically the main protangoist. Smart, good looking, Sweet and having an understandable problem

  • This movie was nominated for best picture back when it was only five nominees and best animated didn't exist. That was an honor.

  • @salmon1pwns To be fair, those two are completely different characters. Unless I'm very wrong, and I could well be, I don't think Jacob was intended to be the villain in Twilight.

  • Gaston didn't care for the review it seems...

  • @4:40, I heard that in one of the supplimentary books for the movie, the Beast's real name is Adam.

  • A tale as old as time.

  • This film is so emotinally PERFECT! This film goes to the core of what is real love!

  • This is my #1 Disney animated movie, then comes Lion King, then Hunchback. Beauty and the Beast looks AMAZING in bluray, go buy it! It's totally worth every penny!

  • I don't remember much about this movie, i only saw it as a toddler, but now that the nostalgia critic has sopken... I HAVE to see it now!

  • The Beast does have a name, actually. It's not mentioned in the film, but his real name's Adam.

  • did he just compare this movie to The Haunting?!

  • There's a reason y this film was nominated for Best Picture.

  • i really want to see this film but i haven't ever had the chance to

  • Nominated for "Best Picture," huh.

Anime can never do that. XP

  • @humanconvertile anime was never meant to do that

  • @Arthus850 Mmm, Agreed. It was only meant sell to a specific audience, sadly.

  • @humanconvertile and for the most part it seems to be succeeding. even doug, who isn't entirely fond of it, mentioned how it was so popular in his NC review of ponyo

  • @humanconvertile but at the same time I agree, though I have seen some extremely well written anime shows out there, very few have gotten to me as this movie has

  • @Arthus850 I know, most anime have good premises, but they all fall into the same bland, stupid shit. This movie captured me so much greater than any of those cartoons, much like you said.

  • @humanconvertile as good as this or not, I still love anime. but you don't have to agree

  • Movie used to scare the hell out of me, and the west wing scene still sends shivers down my spine.

  • Another good thing about this movie is the emotinal side of it. Some parts of it are really touching. What bugs me is the sequels. I was hoping we would see a continuation of ther relationship which didn't happen. But maybe it did the second movie cause I heard it happens a year after the first one and the servents recall the events of the first film through flashbacks so maybe between flashbacks we see something about it.

PS: I heard that the prince's name is Adam for those who are wondering

  • This was my favorite disney film as a kid me and my sister watched it so much we killed the tape and when it come on tv on i have to watch it bc it brings back alot of images of my childhood. This is a disney film that kids now a days need to see and passed down.

  • I only saw a few flaws in the film, but was it enough to ruin it? Heck, NO! The characters, the story, the humor, and the songs were all still great.

  • Belle is my favorite distney girl becasue i'm alot like her!^^ Belle is way more awesome than other disney girls even through Mulan is my second favorite disney girl

  • My favorite Disney movie ever. And Beasts real name is Adam.

  • The final fight scene sends chills down my spine every time. I remember trying out for the role of the Beast for the play and being absolutely devastated that I didn't get it.

  • Gaston disliked this review

  • Is it just me or does Belle's eye color keep changing? I remember seeing this waaaay back when for the first time and she had brown eyes. But in the clips shown in this review I'm seeing brown, then green, then brown again, then green!

Still love this film to pieces. But this detail is confusing me.

  • it my be the reason the movie didn't win best picture

  • i love this movie it is almost perfect, but there is one mistake in the movie. It's when the villagers are chasing the dog foot rest in to the kitchen u need to look close but before the enter Le Fou is missing one of his shoes which the dog has but when they get inside he has both shoes on and the dog still has his shoe

  • F**K any neo-feminist who brings up what's "sexist" about this film

  • A fitting tribute to a truly flawless work of art. A hearty "thanks" to Mr. Walker for making this.

  • I heard that the prince's name was Adam too.

  • @PyromanicMisfit27 It is Adam.

Seriously the one thing I would change would be Beast telling Belle his name after the dance and before he shows her the mirror (especially because that's when he's most human so it could show how much Belle was changing him and how much her leaving affected him).

  • I heard, and this may just be rumor, that the human beast's name is Adam.

  • Critic didn't cover enough Gaston. He's almost the perfect villain. He starts off freaking hilarious and ends up a complete psycho. If he were both, then he would be perfect. But still, he's my favorite Disney villain.

  • *sniffles* One of my favorite films!

  • Gaston disliked this.

  • why is it famouse the movie sucks

  • I've heard the Beast's name is Adam

  • I do believe that this is the only positive rev. NC EVER made....as a rev that is....

  • If he wanted to make a nitpick flaw, he could have pointed out how melodramatic it is. Seriously, watch it again and so over the top their dialogue and actions are.

  • @zeldafreak701

Beast: You will join me for dinner.... THAT'S NOT A REQUEST !

*slams door and dramatic music plays*

  • They actually have revealed the real name of the Beast. His name is really Prince Adam, but who cares? To me and I think every fan of this movie, he'll always be The Beast

  • @robro2015 That name comes from a non-official story telling pc game for the pc or so... I know it's not official. And I've listened to the 2010- commentaries for this film. They don't talk a shit about a name or anything, they just laugh at the fact that he doesn't have a name.

  • Fill in the blank

    Nobody _______s like Gaston

  • One thing I like about Belle in this movie is that she is more the Prince and Beast is more the Princess who have to be rescued. But more in the sense of who needs who.

I don´t complain about "Beastians" looks as a human. I mean are´t we tired that they always looks right of handsome all the time and when we don´t get it we complain they look ugly or some nitpicking like that. Personally I can almost imagine his human form in place of when he is angry in his Beast form. Like with the DOOR!!

  • @Ahturos I love how you can totally see him just by his eyes, like Belle did. Oh amazing ;3;

  • I do love Gaston because the songs he sings could have been reworked as Hero songs without much problem.

  • great movie, but I still find it odd how so much of the story here is based on perspective. Beast kidnaps Belle's father, and Belle takes dad's place. Belle is a prisoner and Beast is a horrible beast of a warden (loud and abusive, though not particularly violent). Gaston, though egotistical and chauvinistic (and not portrayed by Bruce Campbell XO) risks (and loses) his life to rescue Belle from her prison. In the end, it's not love that turns the Beast into a human, it's Stockholm Syndrome.

  • I always thought the Beast was kind of a weird looking human but then I found out he was based on the way Italian Renaissance artists drew young men, so that would explain some of it.

  • @maxtull21 But this was a goOd film

  • You put Belle in a Turquoise Tank Top and Brown Shorts, give her Mountain boots and a backpack, She'd look like Lara Croft. Just Sayin'

  • @maxtull21 why? Belle's much stronger than Bella, and the Beast has a much stronger arc than Edward ever could.

  • @ingonyama70 i agree with you 100%

  • @ingonyama70 Did someone seriously try to group Twilight and this masterpiece together?

  • @40Pacino It was a comment from @maxtull121. It's been flagged as spam, but I think you can still read it below.

  • @maxtull21 I cannot see how any comparisons between the two. How in the hell is Beauty and the Beast like Twilight? Beauty in the Beast is about a strong-minded but kind girl who learns to love a Beast by seeing through his flaws and seeing who he really is. Twilight is about a snobby annoying stubborn teen girl who loves two guys for basically the same reaosn and toys with their emotions. Bella is also weak, always having to be saved, while Belle is actually strong and smart.

  • @maxtull21 I cannot see how any comparisons between the two. How in the hell is Beauty and the Beast like Twilight? • @maxtull21 Oh really. Do tell. What makes you think they are similar? Here are the facts: Belle isn't a dumbass, Beast stops being a total douche when he develops, and Gaston turning into a jealous baddie is believable.

  • i really can't wait until my high school performs Beauty and the Beast in a few weeks! i've always loved this story and to be honest, i think i always will!

  • Walt Disney him self wold be proud of this movie!

  • Belle's the walking definition of the term "Haters gonna hate"

  • Actually Disney did give the beast a name... his name is Adam... why they never played on that and had Belle call him by his real name I don't know... even during the great climax when his life is in danger she calls him beast.... w/e

  • Only saw this one once. I must fix that...oh, and fighting in that ballroom in kingdom hearts 2 was pretty sweet.

  • I love how even though Beast is really scary Belle isn't afraid of him at all. XD He freaked the hell out of me when I was a kid. lol Stolkholm Syndrome. :P

  • This is my favorite movie ever, out of any other animated or live action movies this is my all time favorite, and I a guy. When I was a kid I didn't want to watch it because I thought it was to girly

  • This is my all time favorite Disney movie...I freaking love it -3

  • The fact that the Beast never had a name always stuck with me as well. But it's a pretty small flaw in a great film.

  • You know, I always loved this movie even as a little kid not so much because I could relate to Belle, but moreso because I could relate to the Beast. I mean, it's hard sometimes to control your temper and it takes a special kind of strength to overcome that kind of problem. Also, it goes back to the whole thing about loving someone for who they are, not their looks. The Beast had to admit that perhaps no one in the end would love him because of the way he looked, even if he changed in character.

  • Am I the only person who fins beauty and the beast cliche and boring?

  • This is my all time favorite Disney movie. :)

  • And with a story as character-driven as Beauty and the Beast, a lack of investment in the characters really defeats the purpose of the story. After watching Beauty and the Beast in the theaters, though, I can really see why people can love this movie so much. This film is GORGEOUS and phenomenally well put together. It's still not my favorite, but I certainly appreciate it.

  • You know, I had never liked this film as much as my fellow Disney enthusiasts, and I could never pin down why. But, after watching this review, I realized that it was because I find Belle hard to sympathize with. (True, she doesn't fit in with her environment, but that's because she lives up to the expectations placed upon late twentieth century American women rather than expectations placed upon pre-revolutionary France women.) (continued...)

  • Beast's real name is Adam

  • i like this movie.......because of belles boobs

  • @mynamemaycontainAtoZ Psh. Everyone knows that the boobs of Gaston's groupies are far superior to Belle's boobs.

  • Still haven't seen Beauty and the Beast to this day. The most I knew about it came from Kingdom Hearts. I know, I know. I'll prepare for the stoning now.

  • I thought the prince's name was Adam

  • I think that Doug is a fan of the directors of Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise because he really enjoys his three films that he watched

    1. Beauty and the Beast

    2. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

and 3. Atlantis: The Lost Empire

  • He did have a name. "Prince" just like all the other people. I can say only Aladdin and Prince from Princess and the frog were the only guys with names. LMAO.

...If I forgot one, I apologize.

  • @That90sGirl310 Phillip from Sleeping Beauty, Eric from The Little Mermaid.

  • Actually if I was the beast, Probably the first things that would go through My head are - "Oh crap My deep, Sexy, Devinare Voice that I had as the Beast is gone, CRAP."

  • @Nightshift10000 I admit, Robby Benson's "Beast" voice was much cooler than his regular voice, which he used for the human Prince/"Adam".

Doubly so since he used the same voice later as a character on a live-action sitcom, and thus proved that he could reach those bass levels NATURALLY, with minimal computer-tweaking.

  • I think Belle is my favourite Disney Princess simply becos she's not a princess who needs to be saved

she's her own person and SHE saves the male lead :)

in a way Disney was clever with this film, turning it into a subversion of the classic fairytale formula while still being a fairytale

  • @Emrald70 The exact same thing happens in The Little Mermaid.

  • @Peterpansmyman i'm not joining in with the Little Mermaid debate

    I never saw it

  • @Emrald70 Well to bad!

  • @Emrald70 Fair enough ^-^

  • could be month's? yeeeah i doubt it. . . that would mean Belle's father was stuck in the forest for a REEEEEEALLY long time. XD

  • I remember when me and my sister saw The Lion King in 3D, I was reciting some of the lines and got asked to be quiet. All I can think of now is is if the person thought I was bad then, she should see what I'm like with this one :D

  • @TwinGleeks101 Same here actually, but I was seeing Hunchback XD

  • Beauty and The Beast was te first movie I ever saw and it remains to be one of my favorite movies.

  • @FurubaGirl08 Maybe XD

  • "On top of that shes looking for something a little more specific than most Disney female leads and thats something greater than herself something grand, something spectacular something she can barely comprehend" Oh so its deep for Belle, but when Ariel is EXACTLY the same its "whining"

  • My friends and I went to go see this in 3d a few days ago and we had a great time. <3 Funny thing is though, we noticed an odd flaw to the film when they say in the beginning that the Beast has until his 21st year (aka until he is 21 years old) before the rose wilts, and then later on Ms. Pots says that they have been like this for 10 years. If I am doing my math right, that means the Prince was what, 11 when he was turned into the Beast? xD Love the movie. Just thought that bit was funny.

  • @HowlingMonki He was meant to be 11 years old

  • @pupsikboi Based on the math in the film I would hope so :) my friends and I just found it funny since in the stain glass introduction sequence he really didn't look 11, he looked like a grown man. :)

  • Fun Fact:Belle and the Beast are the only characters to wear Blue :D

  • and all threw the review i was thinking beast-ealoty

  • i get to go see the musical in less than 10 days! :)

  • @tigereyes1994 I actually noticed that it kept switching back and fourth! They start off greenish, then brown and then turn greenish again, and then turn brown....AGAIN!

  • I am 15 and still to this day i'v never seen this movie all the way through. I'v missed the middle 30 mins.

  • I think what makes people annoyed with the Beast as a human is because he doesn't resemble the beast anymore. Making a more gruff or rugged guy maybe, keeping his voice macho still or making him kinda funny and do something goofy like the beast did would have made the transition a little more believable. It's almost like they swapped out a new character in the end and people could tell. It wasn't Beast anymore, it was some weird looking French dude at that point.

  • Actually, I think I'd start to freak out if the town started to sing about how strange I am alltogether in front of me.

  • Try to look at Belle's eye color at 0:56 and then 2:29.

They went from somehow a strange green to almost as brown as her hair.

Am I the only one who noticed this?

  • @MetteLentz I noticed it when I saw it in theaters last week. I pointed it out to my friend. I thought it was strange too.

  • @MetteLentz hm, maybe she has hazel eyes? ^^

  • I don't think Belle is too perfect. If she was too perfect she would have simply been happy with her life to begin with. Even though it seems like she could care less about people mocking her when she's passing by them, when she talks with her father you can tell she's not too happy about it. and she's tired of being stuck in her environment and wants to see what else is out there which I think a lot of us can relate to.

  • @bart11114 He means she's perfect as a character, not that she is perfect herself. She has personality, reactions, hopes, fears, flaws, a bit of a temper. Those things make her a perfect character.

  • This is the PERFECT Disney film. I think it beats the Lion King. I love The Lion King but this one is better for me.

  • Stockholm Syndrome: The Movie

  • @darkfire532 It's NOT Stockholm Syndrome! You can't develop Stockholm Syndrome in one day!

  • @ztslovebird Watch the movie. Watch the review. Belle's stockholm syndrome didn't develop in one day. Her life in the castle probably lasted over a few weeks, or even months. Therefore, its entirely possible and highly likely that this is a textbook example of stockholm syndrome.

  • @darkfire532 If it was Stockholm Syndrome, she wouldn't have left the castle at all. Not the first night when she escaped, was attacked by the wolves, and after the wolves were defeated had a chance to escape. And not when she leaves to save her father. Stockholm Syndrome is like brainwashing; you need absolute control in order for it to work. The Beast did not have complete control over Belle, and therefore she was not a victim of Stockholm Syndrome.

  • @ztslovebird The Beast didn't do it on purpose but that's how it turned out. He was angry and cruel with her at first. Very cold and distant. So when he shows the slightest bit of good, Belle hops on board. Beast keeps her imprisoned, forbidding her from tons of things. When he allows her access to the library, Belle thinks of it as kindness when its more brainwashing. Beast is just giving her things she should already have. Belle goes through all 4 stages of Stockholm Syndrome flawlessly.

  • @darkfire532 But, you see, if it WAS Stockholm Syndrome, wouldn't Belle have been submissive from the start? Yes, the Beast yelled at her. But she yelled right back at him. And I thought another sign of Stockholm Syndrome was refusing to leave your captor once you bonded. Didn't she leave the Beast's castle towards the beginning of the third act with no definite plans to ever come back?

  • @ztslovebird Stockholm Syndrome doesn't mean a person is submissive from the start. It means she knew how far she could test the Beast and eventually she knew how to speak and act when he was around. Because she learned how to change her personality around him when he was still a jerk, then she became submissive. And yes she left but that only proves its Stockholm Syndrome: She came back. Whether it was because of the mob or not, Belle would have returned anyway.

  • @darkfire532 Really. Belle devoloped Stockholm Syndrome after just a few hours in the Beast's castle? Seriously; she spent maybe 10 minutes in his presence, during which he WAS cruel to her father, but showed a little remorse at being an asshole and gave her a nicer room than the tower prison. He then left her alone for an hour, during which she knew EXACTLY how far to push him before really pissing him off. And after 5 hours free of his company, she developed Stockholm Syndrome.

  • @ztslovebird She was only there for one day?!

  • @MyScorpion42 No; Belle was there for several months. But according to @darkfire532, she developed Stockholm Syndrome in the first day, which is why she didn't escape when she had the chance.

  • This is surely my favorite movie in the Disney animated canon.

  • The Beast's real name was suppose to be Adam, right?

  • @NickyVendetta Yes it is

  • Ah, Ashman's last film. Thank you for your beautiful work. Reast in peace. <3

Menken's score is incredible, as always of course. Those opening chords never fail to give me chills every time I see this film.

And Robbie Benson is a BEAST in this film. Pun intended. Seriously, can you imagine how much water this man had to drink while making this film so he wouldn't lose his voice?! He's just amazing.

  • Plus the creaters of who did Belle in her blue dress were ripping off Dorothy Gale from "The Wizard of Oz".

  • @maxtull21 That's like saying people in real life can't wear the same clothes as someone else (...sounded creeprier than I meant but, nvm...). Puting in a similar outfit does not make it a rip-off is my point.

  • Belle doesn't have any problems of flaws? She loses her freedom and the right to see her father ever again. Plus she's considered an oddball and an outcast in her own town? You call that a character without flaws?

  • @MTTT19 It's the people of the village that consider her an outcast, not her doing at all, not a flaw on her, but on the village. Other than that, you have a point.

  • It would be very funny if, in the end, we have something like this.

Beast (human form): Belle, what do you think about my true form?

Belle: Hmmm....well....I'm little disappointing....I prefer your Beast form.

    Beast (human form): WHAAAAAT?!!

    X'-D

  • Seeing this movie in 3D was probably more spectacular, especially all the castle scenes.

  • [Continuation of my previous comment]

    2) Second, it happens on occasion that some characters suddenly just stop moving and become still images. It can be seen during the "bella is weird" song when the three women pop up and freeze for a moment, and also during the revelation of Beast's human face. There probably have been more such moments, but it's these that I remember. It kinda ruins the feeling, having it in the middle of perfectly animated film which is supposed to be a perfect classic.

  • I just watched the whole movie (somehow, I must have missed it), and... it was good, yes, and almost made me shed a tear when Beast was dying, but I have two nitpicks to tell:

    1) First, the way they stopped being scared of each other and started knowing each one better. Maybe it's just me, but for me it was like "Oh, how we hate each other, he's so beastly and unlikeable! AHHH! THE WOLVES! Oh, how like each other, he's such a charmer, everything's nice, weee!"

    [Next part in second post]

  • I have to agree. I generally actually dislike love stories but this one...Just wow. It teached me that love is blind. Perfect movie.

  • This is Disney's best animation and character design you can get. Not even the latest Disney movies can offer something this good. Why? Because now they leave the whole deal to a computer. Ok, this movie has some computer scenes but there's also a huge more that were hand made. I really miss those days where Disney films had real feeling and not just a good story.

  • I always thought that Belle and the beast took around 5 month to a year to fall in love seeing as it looks like the middle of june when the movie beginnings and around spring when it ends.

  • i actually never seen this one. this or bambi

  • At least Ariel saved Eric and she didn't have to be saved by the storm, and she knows the sea, while on the other hand Belle has to get her ass saved by the Beast by risking himself outhere by wolves.

  • Plus the main characters are not likeable (for me) because they are not that interesting and bland.

  • Why this masterpiece didn't win Best Picture I'll never know.

  • This is the one nostalgia critic I completely agree with 100%

  • @kaylawesome2 this isn't really the Nostalgia Critic, it's Doug Walker reviewing this as himself

  • @kaylawesome2 So would my Auntie Sam!

  • This is in my opinion the moment Disney outdid Walt. Walt wanted to do this story but couldn't figure out a good script and scrapped it.

  • I saw this movie on Sunday In theaters

  • Belle gets captured and remains in a boring castle for the rest of her life with a selfish bratty Beast, while Ariel can swim freely and have fun period.

  • I fucking hate this movie.

  • 2:35 There are no Northern Cardinals in Europe. It's a new world species.

  • I love this movie . . . except for the ending.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's great that the Beast learned to love and be loved and yes, I know this is a story where symbolism rules over realism, but did they REALLY have to have him change back to a handsome prince? It's like the story's moral of learning to love someone for who they are on the inside got totally tossed out the window with the end: "Hey, who cares if you're loved for who you are inside as long as you're good-looking?"

  • My niece loves this fucking movie!; I bought the 'Limited Edition HD' version, or, whatever it was called for her for Christmas & after seeing it from beginning to end, she's loved it, ever since & wants me to watch it with her, every time I go to see her.

  • DID HE JUST KEEP CALLING HIM BEAST AFTER HE TRANSFORMED?! loooool

  • Belle has kind of an Anne Hathaway thing about her. Or I guess Anne Hathaway has a Belle thing about her. Can't put my finger on it, but they go hand in hand for some reason (at least to me they do)

  • i am VERY glad that you have put these videos up here on youtube, but have you edited it ? i remember that doug also talked about a argument that belle might be suffering from stockholm-syndrom, but turns it down.

  • Thumbs up for a "Doug's top 11 (or 20) favorite Disney movies"

  • Ahh Gaston~ the Bruce Campell of the Disney World~

  • when i was a little boy, i didnt want to watch this movie. i thought that princess movies were stupid like how most boys did and still do. after my mom made me sit down and watch it for the first time, i fell in love with this movie. i watched it probably everyday. and all these years later after seeing many other disney films, i can safely say that this is and always will be my all-time favorite disney movie and probably in my top 20 favorite movies of all time.

  • My very first Disney movie in theaters AND the very first movie I ever saw in theaters. AWESOME.

  • I think his name is Prince Adam...

but...this movie was incredible in 3d.

  • I am SO happy that I own a DVD...

    ;D

  • In my opinion Belle is not very pretty and interesting, but Ariel is period.

  • I'm glad that the critic gave this a great review. Saw it again tonight and it's still perfect. Bravo still amazing after all these years.

  • The Beast's real name is Adam, Prince Adam. Look on any Disney website if you don't believe me. I really dont like this name for him, its too bland. I wish he was named Vincent or something, like the beast played by Ron Perlman from the tv show Beauty and the Beast.

  • I liked this movie until the ending. Belle was one of the first disney girls to not seek-out a man. She wanted substance, and adventure in her life. In the end she got a man, and never really pursuit anything she wanted to do. It was really a waist of an adventurous character.
