  • this is the era i should have been in

  • It's not true that there are no traces of the depot at Bricklayers arms - most of the original walls are still there in Rolls Road, Willow Walk and Pages Walk, and there's one original building left on the corner of Pages Walk and Willow Walk.

  • @alexwindsormusic I'll give you that one, although I was referring to the site's former use as a Railway depot rather than the surviving architecture - which I confess to being ignorant of until your comment! From a Google Maps Streetview perspective the whitewashed building and retaining walls look in very good nick and I would suspect they are listed structures. I will have to take a ride into town for a proper look.

  • @alexwindsormusic The turntable survives as well. For many years after the shed closed the repair shop was still used for repairing cranes for which the turntable was needed to gain access. This was the case even after the goods depot had closed & it was the sole reason for the branch to Bricklayers Arms surviving until 1981. After this the turntable was removed by volunteers from the Mid Hants railway & it was stored in Hampshire years before going to another railway.

  • @katherine232 Thanks, I was surprised to learn recently that one of the Cannon Street turntables (Ransomes & Rapier Ltd, built 1926) survives as well, at Hither Green depot, where it is still used for turning on-track plant and machinery - there are pictures on the manor-lane dot co dot uk website. Having read the kentrail page on Cannon Street MPD, I wonder if this is correct though - perhaps this was a replacement for the 1892 one which was retained after the 1925-6 revisons.

  • I was a fireman at the brick 1955-57 when I left to join the merchant navy. But many happy memories, only wish I had stayed. Can anyone tell me where I can see either William Shakespeare or the Iron Duke as I saw these at stewerts lane

  • Afraid they were melted down into razor blades... but, two Britannias have survived, the original, number 70000 Britannia, and 70013 Oliver Cromwell. There's a clip of William Shakespeare here - search for "A 'Britannia' on The Golden Arrow at London Victoria "

  • May I suggest that some of these images were fimed at Nine Elms together with the Bricklayers Arms clips? 30781, 30448, the line up of the Schools and SECR 4-4-0s, and also L class 31760, and Radial Tank 32563, are all pictured in the shed yard of Nine Elms. That being said, great clips and fond memories

  • I used to live in a flat overlooking the approach line to "The Brick" in 1960's. All these wonderful old locomotives would have come past my bedroom window.

This brings back many happy memories. Thank-you so much for sharing.
