I wish someone would post the Family episode w/ Joanne Woodward as Eunice's high school friend who get's Eunice buzzed in afternoon and goes to the museum.
Yes, this was the very first sketch featuring what would eventually be called "The Family." I'm an old codger and watched the Carol Burnett Show throughout its original airing, and I remember watching this episode with my family...every one of us was just about in tears with laughter.
The dog was suffering from....digestive problems (dysentery). Eunice stated that the condition was temporary, or "passing;" her children had it and had gotten over it.
Why is it that on Mama's Family Philip and Jack the brothers of Eunice aren't there, but Vinton and Ellen are as siblings. Anybody...please tell me. Thanks. Debra
When Mamas Family came along they changed the characters around to give it something that the audience would respond to. And when it was syndicated they took out the characters no one much liked and added Bubba and Iola.
also, the carol burnett show was still going strong then and it was a schedule conflict which left them without eunice, and ed...and even ellen...who had started golden girls...thats why they also killed off fran
@Pinkstonnaked Go to my channel, in my favorites you'll see a mamma's family episode, "Fran's dress" posted by Hardysgirl4life, go to her channel, she's got 5 out the 6 seassons, I believe fran's funeral in in seasson 2. You can see in what order the episodes aired in the Mamma's Family article in wikipedia. Enjoy.
I am almost positive that this was the very first sketch with this family. Who knew at that time it would become a classic. I love these sketches, they were so funny, but so sad at the same time.
I also think this was the first one. If not I can't imagine which one was unless it's the one I call "Forgive Your Enemies." But I'm pretty sure you're right.
@Tabstarkin This was the first sketch but not for Burnett's character, Eunice was created in 1973 in a 3 part sketch about Eunice and her siblings dealing with the death of their mother. It was such a success that she decided to spin it off into "The Family" . This sketch aired on march 16, 1974. Forgive Your Enemies (Brotherly Love) was the 2nd.
@pgy001 - On the original episode that contained this show, this was immediately preceded by an introductory premise as laid out on-camera by Lyle Waggoner, dressed in a tux and set to a dark background.
This was not the only sketch meant as a one-shot but became a recurring series of sketches on the show. The soap spoof "As the Stomach Turns' " first appearance was as an intended one-shot on the Feb. 12, 1968 show, with Betty Grable as an amnesiac and Martha Raye as a gold-digging widow.
I was noticing right from the start that Eunice's hair was different from every other sketch, the house was much nicer and Mama's whole face and makeup are not quite as practiced and she has a nicer dress in this one. Ed also was working in the shopping mall, not his own store as later develops. You can definitely tell this wasn't part of the regular series of sketches.
True, but I don't think they ever envisioned people really getting into these and taking into account all the details we can on youtube by watching these so much. Plus, they had no choice. I mean, in all, Eunice had a lot of brothers, dependent upon who was the guest star that week: Alan Alda, Roddy McDowell, Tommy Smothers, and then Ken Berry in the movie.
Ah, and it was also Mama's house - later on we revisit it in "Ed visits a Massage Parlour -" Eunice bursts in while mama is watching a soap, saying she is leaving Ed. While the background are identical. Too, there are fleeting references to Ed and Eunice "coming over" just as soom as mama called. Oh. Now. Is this all really relevant? My stars, I have been watching TOO MANY of these! Fave line, when Roddy "loves" mama's hair:: "Oh you couldn't POSSIBLY, it's FILTHY." HEE, I LOVE these.
Lol. I love when the family visits Phillip in California, and when Mama first comes in the door, she is pissed about so many things. If you haven't seen it, go watch. It's hilarious...then again, aren't all of these? :)
YES. And I DID look at that one, she's peeved 'cause no one'd stop so she could git a moovie-stahr map! Another fave line of hers is when Tommy Smothers (amother brother?) is in the hospital, Mama buys him a tacky little game in the gift shop which she drops on his stomach, he then expresses little interest in the toy, and she SLAMS it on the bed side table saying "WELL THEN JUST PUT IT ASIDE!!!" I had not seen that since I was 8 or 9, it was WONDERFULLY nostalgic for me!!
LMAO. I love that, too! Especially when she follows it with "ya never did play with that erector I bought ya fer yer 10th birthday!" Her crabbiness is what is often so hilarious. Like the one where mama is staying with Eunice and Ed, and she's in a wheelchair. It's not posted on youtube, but I have it on tape. She is buggin Eunice to the 9th degree! Ha-ha!
@Pinkstonnaked Because Burnett wantted Lawrence to have her own show, so she paid a lot of money to the network for the rights of the characters, some characters were not worth paying for, so they made new ones. That's why Burnett only did a few episodes in syndication, she didn't want to overshadow Lawrence, so she made Eunice kind of "fade" away during the second seasson.
My advice to Phillip is to stay far away from his very dysfunctional family!

I thought Ken Berry played Philliip (who eventualy turned into Vinton)

I am assuming that Raytown is Raytown Missouri in the Ozarks.... Do they ever say? Phil Hartman does a PERFECT Ozark accent.

On the NBC "Mama's Family," when Mama learns to drive you see that Aunt Fran's car has Missouri license plates. So that's a good guess
markxxx21 2 years ago
In the episode of Mama's Family where Thelma buys her car it has MO plates.

What are they talking about at 6:00? Sounds like passing. I was just wondering what that is.

actually, i think that "passing" may be referring to err, farting? as in: to pass gas.

Oh, this is too wonderfully funny! Could you please post some of the other segments of the Carol Burnett Show that Roddy McDowall was on?

Yeah this is the first one, and at the time they had NO INTENTION of it being a reoccuring skit, they only meant for it to be a one time thing.
