My biggest problem with all this is the analogy thing...
Don't get me wrong : I like analogies, they are a great way to explain things, but Russell seems to forget that our brains are actually made to see analogies where there might be no «real» relation or comparison.
We are maybe fooled by our brains, and analogies are just tools : they are not reality.
We are biased when it comes to understanding reality for «real»...

The music is hypnotizing like cult music or something. And the guy talks really slowly. And by the way, information technology is currently rising at an exponential rate, so I have no idea where he got this graph from. This all seems very much like new-age old-thought philosophy (not saying it's terrible, just a little dazed by narcissism). Information technology IS the future because it connects us to the rest of our world and helps to expand our global consciousness to include others.
@seanotube85 what better resource do we have for processing information do we have than our mind? when you think about that question, does a computer give you and answer or does your mind draw it's own conclusion? maybe there is alot of information technology out there but that information is processed through a human mind before it is brought into existence, am i wrong? information storage is huge, but it's useless without the ability to process that information (that came from my mind)
@bottman5 Right, computers won't make up your mind for you. But they WILL expose you to the rest of the world so that you don't become some "enlightened" being who isn't even aware of what's going on in the world around them. You can actually tap into the world around you without having to travel for the rest of your life to go to all these places and you can gain a bigger picture and a bigger understanding of what's REALLY happening in the world rather than shelling yourself off from it.
@seanotube85 yeah lol im not too interested in being "enlightened" :P but i mean we cant really perform as human beings beyond the capacity of our own minds, so through the proactive use of our mind, our possibilities and capabilities would also be exponentially growing along with all of the available information if that makes sense? information is just a tool just like when chimps dig for ants, alot more complex but still just a resource and ultimately the decisions are made from inside.
@bottman5 Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I still felt like the video was lacking the provocation of thoughts that I was looking for. We need to take a good long look at the cold harsh facts of reality before we happily skip off away to nirvana. Otherwise this "global brain" idea is useless.
@seanotube85 lol yeah it was pretty brain-washy and slow... but anything saying that we need to work together as one at least comes to the right conclusion ;p and information tech is already unstoppable so i think working together to improve ourselves and society is going to be one of the main focuses and challenges of the future, especially making sure that we're all in the right state of mind and going in the right direction.
Anyone know what year this is from? Just wondering because of the graph from the video and the mention of the curves intersecting around the year 2000.
did u mean to say understand in place of agreed, because u have to understand something before u can agree or disagree. "Humans are animals, just how bees were made for photosynthesis, for the benefit of earth, humans are here for whatever reason." are you trying to say were animals just like bees so we do have a purpose and u just dont know the reason. start making sence!
Okay I have a few problems with this. 1) the idea that evolution has a main thrust is representitive of the exact sort of anthropocentrism he's criticizing. 2)humans are defined more by their herdish nature than their individualism, and it is this herd (not individual egos) that are running off a cliff 3) dolphins are sex crazed, violent animals that may be smarter than New Age philosophers, but lets see them beat me in chess.
you've misunderstood his concept of I, watch the primacy of conciousness
and the implications of the dolphin neuronal network is they have the potential to be very smart, they just don't have the right environments to develop it
didn't quite understand what you meant by the first one tbh :P
and i hope that new age philosophers comment wasn't about peter russel! if not then well said
dolphins sex crazed and violent!? u must be watching too much animal planet. if u had ur shit straight u would know they are one of the few that do it cuz they enjoy it(not crazed). im sure u learned on tv that they kill others young. most animals do that to bring the youngsters mom back into heat and have kids to carry on his bloodline. there are pleanty of other videos that need ur expert cratique so go research more about sexcrazed violent animals u weardo!
I'll be more specific.Male dolphins form groups that attack other pods and forcibly abduct their females so as to impregnate them. This is not voluntary.
I don't watch animal planet, but I have studied zoology and worked as a wildlife researcher in the field.
It is dangerous when we treat animals such as dolphins and chimpanzees like humans bc/ they resemble us in some ways. This is flawed anthropomorphism and for one chimp owner in Maine it ended with her face and fingers being ripped/bitten off.
It was connecticut. Actually suburbs of same city I worked in at the time. We should let animals do what they do in the wild and leave them alone. They all have their niche in the planetary ecosystem
Thanks for the correction. Agreed. Another example of this same mistake at Sea World recently. The irony is that people who ascribe human characteristics to animals don't really like animals, otherwise they would not need to think of them as human to enjoy them.
Exactly. I felt no sympathy whatsoever for the trainer that lost her life. She made her own choice to exploit another being and paid the ultimate price. Live and learn I guess.
"I felt no sympathy whatsoever for the trainer that lost her life."
Well... good for you, I guess.
May I ask. Was she such a horrible person for you to scorn her?-- even in regards to her death? I'd imagine that most people who anthropomorphize animals, do it because they believe they are doing something good, or am I wrong?
Thats a great question. I am an objectivist by nature and so the concept of equality I see as simply that, a concept. There are no real grounds for claiming ourselves to be superior to animals or in claiming all to be equal. This is imposing our ideas on nature; she hates that.
Anthropomorphism doesn't always lead to injury and in some instances it can be a useful assumption (we share many facial expressions with animals), but I don't see any reason for not recognizing it as the fallacy it is.
No real grounds for claiming superiority or equality.. hm, well this is what I think. From what I observe, the idea of superiority is a highly immature one. I've noticed, that when people believe themselves to be superior to another, they somehow pride themselves on having a better nature than the other; as if they've somehow got to the very ontology of themselves, changed it for the better, and should be revered for doing so. (Of course this is impossible)
I think the truth of the answer to this question might be more simple people would suspect (at least from my view). And that is that we are equal because we all share the same nature. So, that would make the only real difference between people... it would be difference of whether or not people struggle. The difference between who endures the experience of effort and between those who don't. Sacrifice, understanding, compassion, etc.
And I think the irony of it is, that the better ones who operate within these better modes, are people who wouldn't even think of themselves as superior to others. Funny right? lol. Maybe the only real inferiority is the thought that one is superior to others..
...Well, those are just my thoughts on that subject. hehe
I think the only way we can understand animals is by understanding them. Making animals understand us is foolish for our view on the world requires various cognitive organs that many animals lack. On the other hand, in most non sensory cases we have within our brain, the elements that most animals utilize to navigate and understand the world. As a result we have a much better chance of understanding them than vice versa (senses excepted LOL try imagining hearing in 3D like owls)
True that our perception of the world requires various organs that many animals lack. But It's probably the goal of the 'anthropomorphisers' to help them develop like us by getting them to do the same things we do. However, I think this is a mistake, because I hold the belief, that any attempt to force nature along it's path will always be a mistake; no exceptions. Nature just simply knows how to do it better than us. Which is why control and manipulation are always bad ideas in the end.
Probably a better idea would be to give them a productive relationship by giving them more loving attention. If they're sad, show them that you notice and comfort them. If they want something, put in the extra effort to find out what they want. Finding some means of communication between human and animal might encourage them to want to do so themselves.
I think it's important to remember that "we" are the ones who are further evolved, and should take on the burden of leading by example, and not making "them" do all the work.
When you say to imagine hearing in 3d like owls, you bring up a very interesting subject. I used to watch this show called Extraordinary People, and it was in regards to people who have abnormal human abilities. These shows attempt to go into scientific detail as to why this is so.
Some abilities include: smelling colors, using their mind as a themostat, 'experiencing' the numbers of mathematics, and having a visual perception of sound (these are all separate cases)
And in most cases, these are people in which these abilities didn't just land on them. They are usually cases where these people had a prior fascination with these abilities. In the case of the person who could experience numbers, he had an unrelenting fascination with numbers growing up.
Sometimes I get a picture of a document in my mind. Like most people, they get random, unexpected images in their mind. However, I personally don't just ignore it. I try, in a very disciplined manner, to try to see the letters, words, and sentences. At first I could just see the letters...
...But now I can sometimes see whole words. But focusing too hard on the words, I can read it in a way, but am not make out the concept of what it is because I'm too focused on the reading function.
This sometimes happens to me right as I wake up in the morning. And because it feels like a good challenge, I take the time to challenge myself with it. And of course, prior witnessing these fascinating shows, I don't think it to be an utter waste of time to do something like this. It actually feels progressive for my mind.
Perhaps it's just nothing.. but these are the sort of fascinations that these people had before they obtained their abilities. But in other cases, it appears to have just landed on them for no apparent reason.
No apology required, very interesting points. I also saw that show and I was also struck by the developmental nature of the 'powers'. The shows producers were not and cast everything as genetic, but the people themselves really seemed to have developed their abilities from some powerful experience in their past.
Some maniac is gonna take this theory and blow new life into fanatical communist idealism. The idea of new tree growing out of the compost of a dead tree might form a better analogy of reality. Feeling alienated from our western paradigm is not necesarily a bad thing, it's like people having the brain to jump of a train that is on a collision course.
I can't believe this man blatantly claims that individuality is a "dangerous" thing to have. People should be more in sync with each other, but not to the point where they are forced to think and behave the same way. If anything, this man is an illuminati member who is trying to usher forth the New World Order
Boy you really proved him wrong, what logic. You belong here in the youtube commentary where the most accepted means of argument is an ad hominem attack.
Now let me rebuttal in the same style... You are a poo-poo head.
Ur post was soo stupid i just had to sign in! He never said it was dangerous to be individual. he was exlaining the similarities between the formation of cancerious tissues and human civilization. IF u even watched the video and were actually able to fallow it. ahhhh nevermind waste of time.
This man does not produce enough hard evidence and strikes me a bit as a pseudoscientist. This supposed "Mind" curve at the end, where does he get this? He basically pulled it out of thin air. Ask yourself, how does he graph or measure the amount of people "evolving", as he says, their minds? And the idea that dolphins and whales are smarter than people?
This is all very new-agey and needs to provide more evidence for its extraordinary claims.
LaRouche anticipated, all of that stuff. Study LaRouche and join in the war against mystisism. This is war, between the oligarchy and the Nation State republic. Stop with the twilightzone shit.
Few changes are happening already, most Institutions engaged in promoting "the ego centric" view of the world are dying together with their teachers and supporters...we need only to stop them brainwashing the (our) kids. Once, united together we can make a much better world of what it is now...
Amen to that sir, Peace, Love, Light, Learn more on my playlists! I like to set up lists so i can watch em later, take advantage of the automatic lists!
Think Peace into the world, Think evol into vanishing, those who leave thier imprint on your minds intend to do so. So you do not forget them as, if we all just forget them, they are HISTORY, that is why they put flouride in the water and other sutpifying chemicals, they fear our group intentions of peace, NO WAR only serves war, PEACE PEACE
The ages of human society go through the same growth and development stages as all other living things go through. 1. Who am I? 2. What can I do? 3. Who are you? 4 What can we do together?
For more thoughts about this take a look at my blog at The Wise Turtle website.

i think the key is to NEVER worship anything outside your own person. external worship makes you a pawn in someone else's chess game... internal worship is where you find the one true god, the one that unites us all :)
Its true never to worship any1 ouside of urself, internal worship is the best, but part of internal worship is meditation, and meditation can become dangerous for the unlearned. People in the east have experienced evil voices trying to block their progress in meditation, or when u get to higher levels of awareness ur frequency changes and energy levels rise to a point that u can't handle without a master guiding u, or at lest giving u a mantra.
cont- do not have to worship him/her but a true guru can be literally a life-saver. Theres a saying in the east 'meditate all u want, but only with the true gurus grace can u unlock the tenth gate (third eye) the GURU/master alone has the key'.
There r alot of fakes but when u reach the right state, the universe will cause u to meet the right people/master/guru. They act as a medium just to unlock the god within u.
I think the problem with the west 2y is they have all these new ideas cont
cont- and i also believe these ideas like in this documentary but alot of people in the west just no the knowledge and rarely practise it, i mean we might practise it to a certain extent but thats it. People in india/china new these ideas thousands of years ago, and this awareness within thru meditation. But if u make it ur lifes ambition to meditate u will see pretty quickly that u would come to a halt sooner or later, and thats when u need to find the unstruck melody within from the master.
This film is showing its age. The information age has been a huge disappointment, and to claim we have deindustrialized is a very selfish, egotistical thing to say - exactly what Peter Russell is arguing against. Humanity has not deindustrialized - rich, wealthy nations have merely moved their manufacturing base abroad, where labor is dirt cheap.
I hope Peter isn't a corporate globalist in disguise, trying to convince us that corporate globalization is a great idea. Tut-tut, Peter :p
The mind evolution graph shown by Peter Russel may be little too optimistic. The rate of evolution in new areas is becoming faster but it seems like there are other factors that may stop it from happening as fast as it is predicted. If we were to categorize human generations as being set of people 5 to 6 years apart, each generation is bound by certain peripheries of understanding that only the subsequent generation can break out of.
So is the earth our yah?? There is nothin like it... My mind is doin so much right now, I need help

Probably not, but they will use him and his philosophy.

I can see that. It's just the whole pentagrams part kinda sent shivers down my spine

Boy you really proved him wrong, what logic. You belong here in the youtube commentary where the most accepted means of argument is an ad hominem attack.
Now let me rebuttal in the same style... You are a poo-poo head.

@DarcProjekt

I must disagree with the overpopulation part.
This planet is big and there is food for everybody.
The main problem is the distribution and the information monopoly that prevents the equal distribution of the wealth.
We have enough technology today to rebalance the planet by re growing on the deserts and make this planet paradise once again.
For sure we must be aware of the fact that we are all needed to achieve it.
Peace
The rest is well explained

There are a heck of a lot of ideas in this which are wrong. The music is horable.

LOVE AND LIGHT
metedude2 3 years ago 11
Its true never to worship any1 ouside of urself, internal worship is the best, but part of internal worship is meditation, and meditation can become dangerous for the unlearned. People in the east have experienced evil voices trying to block their progress in meditation, or when u get to higher levels of awareness ur frequency changes and energy levels rise to a point that u can't handle without a master guiding u, or at lest giving u a mantra.
shersingh1 3 years ago
cont- do not have to worship him/her but a true guru can be literally a life-saver.
I think the problem with the west 2y is they have all these new ideas cont
shersingh1 3 years ago
cont- and i also believe these ideas like in this documentary but alot of people in the west just no the knowledge and rarely practise it, i mean we might practise it to a certain extent but thats it. People in india/china new these ideas thousands of years ago, and this awareness within thru meditation. But if u make it ur lifes ambition to meditate u will see pretty quickly that u would come to a halt sooner or later, and thats when u need to find the unstruck melody within from the master.

good thing we're in year 2000 so we're past our selfish ways and are united
heinraken 3 years ago
This film is showing its age. The information age has been a huge disappointment, and to claim we have deindustrialized is a very selfish, egotistical thing to say - exactly what Peter Russell is arguing against. Humanity has not deindustrialized - rich, wealthy nations have merely moved their manufacturing base abroad, where labor is dirt cheap.
I hope Peter isn't a corporate globalist in disguise, trying to convince us that corporate globalization is a great idea. Tut-tut, Peter :p

Great mind at work. It is fascinating.
