@australian1000 BM's job is like being rifleman in the army. You're a common grunt. It can be fun, but honestly there are better jobs in the RAN. You do a lot of painting.... like heaps haha!! Corrosion control is another thing we do heaps of as well along with cleaning. umm rigging and seamanship are also part of our duties.. but there are rewarding parts to it, like being a part of a boarding party, using and maintaining personal firearms things like that.

@australian1000 Well a boatswain is a sailor who can and not limited to train, direct, and supervise personnel in ship's maintenance duties, seamanship, and painting =) and as u go up through the ranks, lets say Petty Officer you'll be called a bosun (senior boatswain) and u may supervise in boarding partys helping with stores. Takeing charge in damage control exercises, senior helmsman (driver). Then when ur cheif and higher u go on bigger ships. U basically do everything =).

If we had no defence force then we would be defensless agianst those who want more then what they already have. In the 1990s Australia almost broke out into war with Indonesia over the fate of East Timor, if that conflict had escalted which it almost did then war would have ensued. To all you people out their who are agianst the need for a defence force. We need a defence force as a detterent and as a force to stop those who would take our lands by force. Now many of you think that does not happen, but mankind is the same creature that we have always been. What this means is that war will always be and it will never ever leave us. Whilst the methods of war change it will still always be the most direct and thus the most optimal way to get what you want from other people.

Our security is guaranteed by ensuring we fund a credible deterrent capability. Our alliances strengthen us but do mean we are obligated to reciprocate.

You'll need an understanding of modern history and to keep it in context. We can extrapolate from our daily existence, that our security can be challenged. @DxsPro Dude. Your opinion on the military does not factor in the lessons of history and the realities we live in (though Australia has largely been insulated since '45). The world is always in flux - and you should not presume that peace is a guaranteed, permanent state of affairs. A viable Defence force is an insurance policy and a deterrent. Along with studying philosophy, you should also study history and hopefully you'll pick up critical thinking along the way.
