Another great Permaculture film. Awesome mobile green/chickenhouse @ about the 15 sec marker.
If you're interested in rasing orgainc food in a sustainable fashion and giving back to the earth - Permacuture is the key. It's works in many, many different climates. See "Greening the Desert with Geoff Lawton" for an awestruck example.
NPK doesn't mean anything if you don't have the biology to feed it to the plants. Biology is the key! Especially fungus! Check out Paul Stamets online.
Big problem in food growing this summer in florida.. The pepper plants croaked fully watered tomatoe plants hardly fruited shrived up too . Plants all in compost out door wickfed in pots tested the soil NPK in normal range soil was alkaline 8.0 ph , I need some advice.
@hijackednation Try these two books, you local library might have them or can get them through Interlibrary loan, request that your library buy it, or get a copy for yourself.
"Gaia's garden : a guide to home-scale permaculture" by Hemenway, Toby "Forest gardening : cultivating an edible landscape" by Hart, Robert A. de J.
These books have lots of info info about soil remediation which works best the natural way. Plus when you're done you will get a LOT more than just tomatoes and peppers.
The reason why I ask is because I live in a desert and I would love to implement this kind of idea. I think the videos are fantastic, and I'm learning a lot!
buy the book Gaia's Garden. It will teach you the permaculture principles you need to know, also in the beginning it talks about how people took a barren desert in arizona, and created a lush, food growing homestead based on permaculture design. With before and after pictures and all.
Fantastic! How about in a desert setting though? I noticed that this is in a tropical setting. I have seen the video "Greening of the desert" and it was wonderful, but I don't see how it would provide that much food.
Forest farming is all very enlightening...but it makes me wonder how on earth one can keep track of what one is actually growing and where they are growing, heehe :)
I love food forests. They're so beautiful.

Can you have a kind of mini food forest in a garden, not a vegetable patch but a mini version of this?

First thing, read "The One Straw Revolution."
Second, you need to rebuild your soil by the sounds of it.

Deserts can be done as well, but in a different manner. You can find an online version of the Permaculture Designers Manual to help you.

If the right people can 'market' and popularize this technique/philosophy it would be mindblowing how quickly our planet could change for the better.

Excellent. This is what I want to see. Talk is fine, but action and living example are where it's at.
