  • isn't it really toxic

  • @cher716 Only if you eat massive quantities. This stuff is in baby diapers, and when babies get old enough, they learn to tear OFF their diapers, tear UP their diapers, and throw it all around. Then sample the fibers from inside because, you know, to babies, stuff from a diaper is very delicious-looking.

  • @gccn ok...this is from a science experiment safety tips for students...Sodium polyacrylate is toxic if swallowed and exposure to the eyes should be avoided. Students should not complete preparation of the activity. It should be completed by a trained professional such as a teacher. Sodium polyacrylate crystals can be harmful to nasal membranes, and should not be inhaled. Everyone who comes in contact with the sodium polyacrylate should keep their hands away from their faces.

  • @gccn Hands should be cleaned immediately after exposure with moist paper towels or baby wipes, then with soap and water. Safety goggles should be worn when sodium polyacrylate crystals are being used. All materials containing sodium polyacrylate should be disposed by placing them in a sealed plastic container, such as a ziploc bag, and placed in the rubbish.

  • @gccn This includes paper towels used to clean up, and the saturated nappy. Sodium polyacrylate should never be poured down the sink. as far as diapers go no long term studies have been done but it is suspected that disposable diapers may cause long term reproductive problems and may even cause asthma. So I'm wondering why some companies say it's as toxic as table salt if scientists go to thes extreme safety measures when using it.

  • @cher716 Oh it's somewhat toxic. Remember that this is a liquid absorber, meaning the internal juices will be absorbed and you could get a blockage (digestive and respiratory) from a large piece or several pieces. As I said, I wouldn't recommend sitting down and eating a healthy portion of it, but unless you're going to do the experiment(s) under a fume hood, there's bound to be a sliver of it get in the nose or mouth and get internally. It's not as deadly as, say, Plutonium.

  • This would make for a great prank. Stick it in someone's drink when they're not looking.

  • @RadioTrefoil Better yet: Pack it in an ice cube tray or box. When they add the liquid... :D

  • I know that they use this stuff in the Slushy Magic thing on TV. Is that safe to eat? I feel like it's not...

  • @MichaelAaronPerez I wouldn't eat it. But I know it's non-toxic.

  • I went and bought a shit ton of maxi pads today. Everyone was looking at me since I am a guy.

  • What is the ratio of water to sodium polyacrylate? Also, is there anything else you could do to get it back to its original form faster besides letting it air dry?

  • @drummerthing2

    microwave it :D

  • @drummerthing2 You can use Sodium Chloride (Salt), but only if you've got a jelly-like substance left over. Which if you put lots more water in, you'll get! Other than that, no, the only way too reuse it, is just to air dry it :)

  • @drummerthing2 I read on Wikipedia that it can absorb up to 200-300 times more water mass than its own mass.

  • where did u buy that powder i want it gimme gimme gimme!!!!

  • Whenever I add water to this stuff it turns into gel and not snow. It has nothing to due with the ratio of water to the powder and I would have to assume its the size of the powder grains, correct?

  • why does it just freeze when i do it? mine doesnt grow or anything it just freezes. :(

  • where can i get this SODIUM POLYACRYLATE? o.o

  • @sandiiix333 Baby diapers, maxi pads, adult diapers. It's the "filler" in all of those products. That's the easiest way to get it.

  • @sandiiix333 TO COSTCO!!!

  • how come some of them turn into gel?

  • Is this used in those hot/cold packs?

  • where do u get it i need it for my school

  • thats how you make cocain lol

  • Your beaker is big. is that 2000 mL?

  • How long can it stay in this form?

  • this awsome stuff!

  • Great informative and interesting video

  • is that artificial snow??

  • why not put the whole thing in your pool?

  • I ordered some of this and just got it today. its interesting material. a little goes a long way.

  • How much Sodium Polyacrylate and how much water was added?

  • is this more of a granulated texture or a fine powder? the stuff i have is more like sugar and forms strange, jelly like crystals but i would like it to produce either a solid or fake snow but i don't know how!

  • Holy crap! A miracle! :)

  • any way to reuse this stuff

  • Let it air dry.

  • what is sodium polyacrylate

  • A compound chemical, used primarily in disposable absorbent pads (surgical pads in hospitals, baby diapers, maxi pads, etc).

  • @gccn where do you buy this thing? :D i really wanna try it ^_^

  • @g131131g is a polymer... it basically absorbs water and turns from its original form as a crystal to a gel. it can absorb 200-300 times it's original weight once it reaches contact with wter, and even more if it is destiled water.

  • @lokilindo would stomach acid digest it? because some of my friends ate a little bit of it, but im not totally sure if thats it.

  • @piche9921

Yess ( although it is very stupid to eat it) it will not harm you, The worst thing it can happen is that they might feel very full with only eating like half a cup, lol. the acids in their stomachs will digest it like is nothing because by the time the crystal gets there it will be a gel. But tell them not to do it any more please, too much of it could be poisonous, may be not lethal but if you eat it every day it could make them feel very bad

  • @g131131g sodium polyacrylate is an absorbent it is normaly found in diapers

  • thats not what it does it turns water into gel not snow thats not sodium polyacrylate

  • Does anyone knows how to make solution for fake snow machine or foam machine ?

  • @crocodil120577 Yeah,1 part soap, 99 parts water. You probably should try more soap but that above makes the "snow" melt almost right away.

  • @crocodil120577 Snow machines use water and pressurized air, the water vapor then freezes under contact with the sub-freezing air and crystallizes forming fake snow. This fake snow does not form pretty little flakes as with real snow though.

Sodium polyacrylate is a polymer that has the ability to absorb 200-300 times its mass in water. It just looks like snow.

  • thank you very much for the reply :-)

  • Holy-Terrorist:>The salt is made with sodium chloride, other, i am impressive with salt table have (70% iodide) mmm

i dont know is potassium iodide

  • Sodium can typically absorb 200 to 300 times its mass in water.

It's these kinds of polymers they use to make super absorbant diapers.

  • i have some of that!!!!!!!!

  • That's very interesting

  • haha, imagine eating a whole bunch of that then drinking a big glass of water

  • does it melt or stays like that forever?

  • I´d throw a bucket of that in a pool

  • @ irenfrea THAT would be awesome! Now I need to buy a bucket of that stuff ^_^

  • @irenfrea do it and upload the results! :P

  • is it reusable

  • yeah, the sodium has to dry basically letting all the water evaporate

  • yes.

  • Wow, you're a cretin.

  • oh belive me.....i know for a fact......try to mix cocain and water togeiter it makes snow

  • Agreed. This was more of a demonstration than an experiment.

  • It's to show how much water sodium polyacrylate can absorb.

  • U can easily find it if you open the inside of a diaper.

  • Where do you get this stuff?

  • Thank you very much for posting this video! I was just going to go out and spend some serious bucks for this stuff in "flake form" as opposed to gel crystals. This one gets 10 nuts.

  • Aren't you nice?

  • your mom's name appeared in my screen dude ...

  • cool

  • Lol so much for keeping that shit off your table. :P

  • How much would you need for a swimming pool?

  • thats a good idea

you will want 5g for every 100ml of water

  • actually its like 5 grams for about 1-1.5 liters of water

  • ok

i saw a guy measure 5grams out and said only add 100ml. but he could be wrong and waisted ingredients.

    thanks for the correction

  • no your correct its 5g to 100ml of water i just tested it!

  • thanks

  • wouldn't that be hard to clean up

  • @hendog1439 Lol can you imagine! Id feel sorry for whoever had to clean it up after lol

  • @hendog1439 It can absorb up to 300 it's mass in water. Just get a calculator. It's surprisingly little

  • where can i get sodium polacrylate? it looks like fun lol

  • ebay

  • istn that in diapers - i think if u cut it open you have it in there - not mutch but i guess thats something ^^

  • There's not much in baby diapers, but there's lots more in adult diapers and disposible pads.

You'd be surprised at how many chemistry experiment supplies I used to get from the baby products at Walmart or grocery stores.

  • @gccn There is heaps of it in baby diapers. It isn't in powder form though. It made up of little fibers, it sort of looks like insulation.

  • so basically all you need is one bottle and you have a lifetime supply

  • yep when u dont water it it turns back into powder and u cand do it again

  • i bought mine along time ago at united nuclear's online store.

  • sickness!!! where can i get it??

  • cool

  • where do i get teh Sodium Polyacrylate??

  • Did u guys know that this powder is used to absorb my piss? I'm not making this up...it was invented for me, and all people of my age - 15/16

  • could u use it for say.........snowboarding?

  • does it melt and does it taste like salt?

  • It just absorbs water/liquids. I've never tasted it... It must be non-toxic because they use it in baby diapers and maxi pads. Dogs regularly raid the trash in this neighborhood and we see half-eaten .... remains .... of those all over the street the mornings after trash day, so if you're curious, go fourth and chow down! Just don't eat used diapers and pads...

  • mine turns into just like a jelly substance.. do you know why its not turning into the powdery material here?

  • Too much water.

  • ive put about as little water as possible, still jelly substance. i think i got the ''low grade'' polyacrylate

  • It's just a different kind. The gel will still absorb a lot like the powder will, but its just in a different form

  • xD .

  • wut is this white thing that thy put on the beakers?

  • It's Sodium Polyacrylate

  • really thanks!! :D

  • I think they meant the person would "explode" like the rice being fed to birds thing that went down a few years back.

  • Do the crystals have any use once they're full (perhaps in a garden or something)?

  • Not really. You let them dry out and repeat the process. They're like re-usable paper towels. From what I've found, they're used in diapers and disposible pads. Some labs use them to control liquid spills.

  • can you just get chemicals like sodium polyacrylate and sodium acetate at a home supply store like home depot or Lowe's?

  • You could try a chemical supplier or possibly an army surplus store. Science experiment shops also carry it. If push comes to shove and you can't get it in pure format, buy small diapers or pads, open them up, dump the stuffing into a paper bag and shake until it's a fine powder. Presto. =)

  • pour it in someone's gas tank

  • we can use it in a flood :D

  • Hahaha!

  • what happens if you put a whole lot of water on it

  • Yeah thats where I thought it was from, i herd they're prices are a little high, but ive not compared to anything myself yet.

  • Is this from United Nuclear ?

  • yes

  • what happens when u put it in the toilet...? :P

  • the same, but if you have a toilet with a little horizontal part, make it dry and pour it on

  • it'll f up ur toilet

  • If you dry out the 'snow' will it go back to the powder again???

  • i think so

  • yes, but it takes days

  • umm. what is that ml. size bottle? plz i wanna know.

  • Hi I am trying to use this chemical for an experiment but the same chemical I bought from Sigma didn't work as you shown. Could you please tell me the exact brand and or molecular weight of yours? Thanks.

  • avec coi il la mélangé ??

  • get it from your kid's diaper.

  • is that the stuff on a ski mountin? cool! im gonna take sum home with me lol. . .

  • no its not. ski mountains use real snow. Sodium Polyacrylate is rebranded as insta snow because it looks and feels like snow

  • that's how they make insta snow

  • you can get it at unitednuclear(dot)com.

you only need so much though, you can re-use it by heating it in an oven.

  • awesome! Chemistry rules! lol

  • where did u buy that stuff ? plz reply asap

  • what the

  • hey where can i get sodium polyacrylate?

  • Waww c'est vraiment génial!!

  • where can I get this stuff?

    other than toys r us??

  • add more water (just a little) and it will then have the abillity to create snowballs.

  • this is so awesome

  • TOTALLY! hi!!!

  • ya its non toxic they sell it as "grow snow" you can buy it at toys r us

  • please expliain how this happens on a molecular level if possible

my scicne teacher said he made it up an i wanna prove him wrong

    lol

    please

  • It's stuff for fake snow, that stuff is not made up. find a website look at other websites to prove him wrong, find a smart professor, write to him and ask, then prove.

  • How do you know what how fine it is and what is the right consistency one needs from this sodium polyacrylate to make proper fake snow, and lastly where can one puchase the chemical compound.

  • i just did it a my house and it beacame a gel....why???

  • It depends on how fine it was before you added water to it.

  • umm ya i read that it becomes a gel....

  • very very small amounts are used in diapers with a wax layer in order to not harm the body. It might be non-toxic but doesn't disclude that it is not friendly with water. If taken when the capsule dissolves the sodium polyacrylate would take the water in your surrounding organs and squeeze your body dry. doesn't have to be toxic to kill you

  • Just drink loads of water and stick your fingers down your throat :)

  • lol

  • Shouldn't it become a gel?

  • What's the recipe?

  • Water + Sodium Polyacrylate.

  • Thanks... By the way, is Sodium Polyacrylate available in store or I have to buy it from a chemistry supplier?

  • nice way to kill someone. a pill capsule, some of this in it bingo instant death.

  • kool

  • wtf????
