my first bucks were hilarious. It was the first time i was riding this crazy ( but adorable ) pony. every time i tried to make him trot he would buck a lot! But I stayed on. Now i love that pony and i ride him all the time!!
i think at that trot he needed more impulsion he wasnt tracking up at all and not using his hind end u should have made him get more impulsion, but sorry about the buck hehe
@Braylea1001 haha yeh it u dont tense ur stomach it will..theres a technique to it ;) some horses are just too bouncy...im lucky i now use a softer synthetic treeless saddle too so can ride lazy style :) i dont ride this horse anymore btw :)
i sometimes go the wrong way when changing the rein, and just hear ,my riding teacher shouting 'ROSE' me----> SORRY!! no doubt my driving lesson will be the same...
@katkat898 he has such an easy gait it is very easy to sit to his trot, plus we were only concentrating on him, not my postition. i prefer to do sitting trot anyow whichever the horse
I had a horse who tried to buck me off after EVERY jump. My trainer refused to let me stop so I just had to stay collected (and on!) and finish the course. It was crazy
welldone for staying on. i remember my first buck it was funny, found out after they wanted to see how the horse was with novice riders haha (i am a much better rider now though lolz)
omg!!! what is that huge blck thing in the back ground its scary huge!!!!!!
btw great job staying on i remember my first buck i survived it until he bucked like 5 minutes later with a suprise attack and i fell lol =( =D your a great rider except your toes there out like ''airplanes'' as my instroctor would put it if i were u i would get yelled at =( great job again =D
@josiescookies17 haha thanks.. lol my airplane feet are still with me now ;) i know i do it but to be honest as long as im comfrtable and stay on when riding i dont care what i look like these days!! lol thanks!!
In eleven years old and anlmpst every time I ride my horse throuws me off and yes if that is ur first buck it mightve taken u by surprise but good job u didn't over react
when i started out i got a horse that like hated me...everytime we started trotting he would have a buckin spaz. but after abit he was amazing (: ! haha
@2hearts1dreamForever i misss this horse!! i was loanng him but after 6 weeks the owner this woman sold him on :( yes this is after id been riding a couple of months..never ridden such a tall horse and was practising sitting trot but trying to stop him dropping his head down..thatnx for comments
@shoppinfreakshow i do stick my feet out!! lol i cant stop myself....bad habit im afraid...but il never do dressage so not too bothered as long as i stay on!! lol fair point tho
@devinbriann12 I know the feeling, I'm duck footed. It keeps my calves exactly where they need to be but it looks funny for everyone else:P Then again, as long as it works for you and the horse, who cares!!:P
@TheLooneybird If your feet weren't as deep in the stirrups you'd have something to put your heels on and fix your feet position? Not meant to be rude, but the deeper your feet are in, the larger the chance you can slip your ankle through and get dragged if there's a spook.
haha thats cute. beautiful horse too! do you know what breed it is? I think you did a wonderful job at staying calm and have the begginings of a great equitation rider. props to you. unpredictable things with horses will only get crazier as you continue riding so keep up the good work!
you look good apart from one thing really, your feet are sooooo far into the stirrups that it is right against the heel of your boot, which is rather dangerous and hard to keep your balance, the stirrup really should be on the ball of your foot. but hahaha, my horse just did this yesterday buck he actually bucked and bolted. no fun.lol. good job sitting it :D
@devinbriann12 yes that is a bad habit of mine i must admit..ive been riding for another year and am much improved...but i do sometimes slip into my stirrups...lol
@TheLooneybird yeah, dont worry, SOOOOO many people ride like that and I just dont understand how you keep your balance with them like that,I cant do it! my stirrups have to be in a perfect spot or it bugs the crap out of me! LOL
nice job! i remember the first time i sat to a buck ^_^ but i was in mid canter and the horse turned sideways xDDD that was my first fall too but it was quite funny =] its really scary when they buck first time cause its kind of like 'omg what was that???' =D lush horse!! hes absoloutly gorgeous!
@Beeny295 ouch that sounds painful!! lol yes i have sat many a proper buck since this video was posted and now ride young arab mare...she also jumps about in canter which sometimes catches me out but i ride with a treeless synth saddle now which i find helps keep me in !! thanks for your comment :-)
@TheLooneybird haha yeahh i wasnt expectig him to buck though!he never bucked with me and it caught me by surprise. sometimes its crazy what your horse will do!
Ok..All you people who say it wasnt a masssive buck...read the discription! Durr.....And at least she stayed on..if u cant give her credit dont comment...i think she did rather well concidering she hadnt been riding that long, at least she has the confadince to stay on !!!! so yeah...back of !!!!!
That was a pigroot. Thats all. Because you shifted your weight across onto ur other seatbone he felt you moving and mistook it for a signal to change gait, you then tensed up, jammed up the reins and bingo, confused horse.
very observant but i had already stated that!! i never claimed it was a big buck and am not showing off...i was having a laff at my own expense. but thanx for ur nasty comment.
becoz the lady who was instructing wanted me to specially ride that way to try and get the horse to stop puilling on the reins....i was also practising my sitting trot too :-) he is beautiful but sadly i dont loan him now. i think he is used in carriages now
pls check out my other videos...tormenta is the pony i am loaning now...what type of horse is she?? pls note my riding is very crap in these vids i know but i havent got any recent ones but i swear i have improved....
lol well done for a first buck, and that pony is so pretty. stupid question comin up, but what is that thin sticking up near the barns in the background?? lol
i think its sooo frightening when the bolt forward! i was having to do sitting trot and hold the sadlle whic i found unnatural but it was meant to teach the horse not to lean on the bit i think. anyway i dont ride spirit now :-( but thanx for ur advice. i now ride a 10yr old mare who has started bolting in canter and bucking when going up hill!!!! heeeeelp! scary stuff
Also when he scoots forward don't grab back on the reins and tense with your upper body and elbows, and stiff through your arms. This would only panic you and your horse more (with my bolter I have to ease on the "brakes" so he doesn't go further/faster)
yes i think i pulled back as was panicking and sliding off sideways...ugh! i have a new loan pony who now when cantering uphill, accerates to a gallop and bucks up the hill!! i normally ends up infront of the saddle!! argh! wats the best thing to prevent her racing off with me??
@TheLooneybird My pony bolts forward, and uphil I find it hard to stop but he doesn't buck so I usually just go with the ride as enjoyment as its usually just a fun hack. But if they buck, I know what you mean. Even if you can't stop the gallop/bolt, keep their head up. That way they can't get a decent buck with their head in the air. One thing I can suggest for bolting is the emergency halts. The first one, I wouldn't want to try up hill but go ahead, is to loosen the outside rein
@TheLooneybird And pull your inside rein across the wither, this will flex them inside and disengange the hindquaters. It's harder for them to drive forward when going in a tight circle. Don't do this too suddenly, I did once and my pony almost fell over xD he never wanted to bolt again for a while though! The other halt is a creation of my mother's. One thumb up, one thumb down, cross your reins over and pull as if just asking to slow, not jarring on his mouth but just gently.
@TheLooneybird I haven't tried the second one, but apparently when my mum used it on my young bolter going uphill as well, and it worked. But my main concern with the bucking is to keepo their head up! My friend's horse sometimes bucks after jumping and its no one can sit to it, they just are catapulted out of the saddle, but as soon as she lands I pull her head up and she doesn't buck.
thank you for ur help...ur videos and horses are soo cool, wish i was in the uk riding, it seems so much better. spain the ground is a lot rockier and harder and the horses all seem naughty!! lol plus not nice places to hack out as dusty and no grass...but it ll do for now
Haha I live in New Zealand! Its amazing here, lots and lots of greenery! But also lots and lots of rain :S Middle of summer here and its raining at the momnt!
@TheLooneybird well my pony started doing this when we first got her because shes really unbalanced in her canter so were teaching her to work from behind so if you canter uphill they really have to push their back legs to propell themselves forwards rather than use their front legs to pull them up, your pony might have something wrong with her back legs and doesnt want to use them so is buking to propell herself forward and then using her front legs to pull her up which is really unbalancing
@TheLooneybird and feels really rocky for the rider making you fall forward, the best thing you can do to stop it is to do small circle work in a school or even in an open field so you gain confidence in open spaces, then you can make sure that when you ride you ALWAYS have a contact with your pony and really get thm listening to you, then when you feel confident enough you can walk up the hill with the contact but release a little bit when their good and tighten when bad
@TheLooneybird then when you hav done walk do the same thing in trot, but if you can feel the pony getting faster and near canter tell them to walk again, if they still pull halt and then push them up in a walk for two steps then trot again but only after your pony is listening to you, then you can do the same in canter, if thepony still feels like their going to buck slow them down into a trot, if they dont listen in trot, walk then halt, then try trotting up the rest of the hill and canterASAP
thank you so much for all ur advice, went to the farm this morning to try again but i really have lost all confidence since she galloped off with me. only did walking work in school today but she was VERY stubborn and did opposite to what i asked. refused to lunge first of all and was being quite lazy. maybe coz she knows im bricking it these days!! cant believe im being such a wuss thanx il take everything u ay on board x
Another thing you can do is stick your stomach out to get rid of nerves and sing a song, even if your awful like me lol, also try not to get discouraged, if your horse sees how hard your trying hes bound to give up some time or later, try making sure that you groom every day and sing to them so they get used to you as it also relaxes you then make sure you give lots of affection to them and dont act scared even if you are! You'll soon feel much more confident and learn to brush
well thats my draw back...i only get to the farm at weekends and maybe one afternoon in the week due to work...if i dont go there no one else pays her any attention apart from feeding her. she is turned out in a paddock with a donkey and her mum and left out all night...so i groom her when i go down which is as much as possible but i think this may be the problem, i dont see her often enough...summer its different as i get more time off but go super early in morning before it gets red hot..ta!
Also, I agree with Twilightlover! Forget what type of horse your on and stay relaxed the entire time! WIth my bolter, he would spook at something, I would tense, and therefore he would bolt! If he gets scared now I just say aloud "Ah, get over it ya prick" and he does! Also, I found out he likes the song "Colours of the WInd" and sing that to him and it calms him and I down. I'm also scared to ride the bucker, wish I didn't have to but I just suck it in and do it anyway!
My only criticism would be that the trot is a bit short and slow xD
I'm guessing that's because your sitting to the trot, though?
I prefer to move my horse forward, especially since two out of three horses I ride are difficult! One bolts and one is meant to buck, hasn't done that yet with me lukily o.O
he was a very slow steady mover i must admit and yes the sitting trot doesnt come easy to me tho im much better now and find i prefer riding without stirrups on my new pony.
I dont mean this meen in any way, but I'm used to htose and I'm 13. Everytime I barrel race That happens because my horse is hyper so yeah. But you didnt panic! So good job
not sure i quite understand the first part of this comment, but thanks for the last bit...ive not been riding very long and have never experienced a horse doing this so please with myself for not eating the dirt!! :-D
My first buck was really high. My horse kicked the little girl on the pony behind. She was ok but I did tell her not to get too close!

My friend's horse sometimes bucks after jumping and its no one can sit to it, they just are catapulted out of the saddle, but as soon as she lands I pull her head up and she doesn't buck.
Good luck, and i'm glad I could help!

@TheLooneybird so that the pony learns it can't just do what it wants, hope this helps!!! :D xxxxxxxxxxx

ah dont give up!

Ah thats a shame it would help, good luck anyway :D x

I didn't survive my first buck. I flew right over her head and dislocated my shoulder. I'm glad you survived yours though!

Cute horse! You were sitting his trot very nicely. Stretching up tall and sitting deep will help you keep your balance :).
