i agree with below message, the only way to know if its better is if the regular iraqi has hope for the future and any trauma can be overcome.

if there is real hope for their future, and they feel that things are progressing and changing for the better, then maybe what may have been an illegal war, has helped regular iraqis. we can only see, maybe now is too premature.

The snipers, the gunfire, the running battles in their streets. how can anyone ask weather or not they are better off. this question is obscenely premature. until parents aren't dealing with the violent deaths of their children, we should not be so callous as to ask them if their lives are BETTER.

If you compare Iraq of 2008 with Iraq of 2007, then yes it is better, a lot better. But if you compare it with Iraq before the invasion, then the answer is no. Sure people died before the war, if you oppose Saddam you will die, if you get very sick, you will die because lack of medical infrastructures due to the sanction. This kind of death is predictable. But now if you go shopping for dinner, it could be your last act on this world, this kind of unpredictability is what we couldn't tolerate.

Six years spent on this war is completely absurd. It is time the government analyzes the situation and truthfully and rationally approaches the issue. America cannot pull out of Iraq because that would only promote total chaos to ensue. However, it needs to figure out a steady plan to stabilize the region and gradually put an end to the war. The government can no longer disregard that 655,000 Iraqi civilians have died. For America's sake, and especially Iraq's sake, this war must be stopped.
