Ya sure. In 1953, it was decided by the Soviet Union to succeed Germany from Europe and displace it into Asia. The powerful nations in the world like Poland, Nepal, and Angola were firmly against this and the Soviet Union would dare challenge them. So in the end the Soviets wanted to prevent any Europeans, especially western Germans from coming into their conquered land. The East Germans were mightily in favor of this and wanted it to be called Stalin's wall, which was denied.

@abdulbade totally agree =) My mom is from soviet and dad is from ddr, and they compare their stories =) the soviets were more brutal, tho the eastern germans learned pretty much of them =( still I can't understand why eastern germany, did not kicked the soviets out! that would be much better, so they could unite =) I mean why should the same people live in separated countries =(( its like North and South Korea =(

Seeing as there was 5 or 6 emails from your replies, Im not going to get into a huge Youtube debate, I'm only going to reply to one comment, the successes of the west and the failures of the east.

I disagree with that seeing the current state of things, Yes many of the ex soviet bloc countries are poor. But even the richest of the west are falling apart. The American economy? european countries like portugal and greece collapsing? 10 years of war in Asia minor?

@Kastrenzo74 and lastly. A lot of the former states of the soviet union were dirt poor to begin with, Kazakhstan? Uzbekistan? Azerbaijan? these places are all like Mongolia. still living in yurts and such. At the most a few of them made money selling oil. Or getting test sites on their soil like Baikonur in Kazakhstan, but for the most part The European parts of the USSR got the cream of the crop. Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. mostly.

The -Only- Reason America stockpiles nuclear weapons is a fear of a war with Russia, and vice versa. they both have over 2000 nuclear missiles. China, with the third largest stockpile doesnt even come close. And china just like in the cold war sits as the odd duck out, not getting involved.

Russia had a bunch of "Suitcase Nukes", and some of them were stolen, people literally walked out the door with them and now they're probably held by some warlord in the middle of Tajikistan or some random place

So much of this drama could have been Avoided if the Russians didnt give the Allies their own zones in Berlin, Dividing Germany, fair enough, but one city was a logistical nightmare not to mention a political one, as you can see from this video.

Also the fall of the wall wasnt the end of the cold war, may have been the beginning of the end, but it didnt end until the soviet union divided, in 1991-1992

Stalin wanted to break germany up into many small countries (non of which would be called germany) The west would not have this. The soviets at that time were really disgusting. The soviets took every country they marched through on the way to berlin. The united states and britain liberated every country they marched through and then went home,

@Kastrenzo74 The united states was no angel however at that time we did have good intentions. The american influence on europe was one of Democrasy, freedom of speach and religion. If you look at western europe after ww2 we have only gotten along there have been no wars. Even the EU was formed the west is united. The east is still broken and poor. The united states started to go downhill after the war quick but right now Im refering to the big 3.

Now lets look at the soviet counterparts. Ukraine, Kazakstan, Poland. Those are there best and none of those (Even massive ukraine) are at the same level as even franceThey did do it on there own, but they were completly destroyed after ww2 and they were supported by us to rebuild.Which they did great

When I read about communism it can be wonderful but when I see communism I see horrors. The last communist countries are STRUGGLING to feed there people after the ussr failed they were unable to live withouth there "master" If the united states disappeared tonight,Germany would still be a MASSIVE super power. @Kastrenzo74 If you read my comments you will see I mostly refered to stalins regime. However the berlin wall was build during Kruschev term I think. The people kept fleeing the east. China has been VERY succesful however I dont know how much shed be if the west collapsed. We are the big spenders and waisters. Are you a communist? National Socialst? If you are German you would know how good the germans had it in american zones and how bad the soviets zones were.

@Kastrenzo74 My aunts mother was an austrian who lived in the american zone she managed to escape the soviet zone (where she was raped) She met an american soldier and managed to come back with him. She said the diffrence between the american zone and soviet zone was huge. She lost 1 brother fighting for the nazis and one brother fighting in the resistance. She never speaks about it unless I pry. Then she only says the most short answers possible.

If one examines the design structure of the wall (later version) it clearly was built to keep people in. It contained various preventive EXIT BOUND layers in the design.

The anti-vehicle obstructions alone were implemented in such a way it is irrefutable that the wall was intended to keep the citizens in.

I suggest you review the GDR immigration laws prior to May 1989.

There were outbound vehicle obstructions not shown in this video that most likely would have assisted one if they wanted to "break in" to the GDR.
