No way. the sony a33 and a55 suck for video. They don't even have 24p, nor 60p. No manual audio controls either like the t3i. And the video bitrate is pathetically low.
the only better feature it has for video is continuous auto-focus, which only amateurs would need anyway
@BenHughesStudios And as for auto focus. Having only manual focus means missing out action outside, because you can't see a damn thing on a puny screen in bright sunlight. That is a problem and you know it.
Also, with running around kids and pets, manual focus, forget it. And you know it.
And what about handing the camera to the wife (no offense) for some casual shooting, and perhaps time for YOU to be filmed. Forget that with the Canons.
You do realize that that doesn't help your argument at all right? If you're going to argue that something is better simply for casual users, and a MULTIPLE TIMES WORSE in every other possible department, then what's the point?
@BenHughesStudios I'm just fighting back against Canon fanboism. The claims made do not justify calling the Canon superior. The Sony does things for photo that the Canon does not.
For video, it does what you need it to, except for some manual control and 24p/60p + digital zoom.
But to produce the best video for most situations, you end up wanting the same settings as what would be set using automatic settings anyway.
@BenHughesStudios Often you're fighting grain, especially indoors. That means you want the aperture wide open. Whether you do that manually or have the camera make the same choice for you, the outcome is the same.
Yes, you can come up with scenarios where you really need that manual control.
But even professionally, the Sony is useful for video. Plus you get auto focus.
The outcome definitely isnt the same, and pros would never be caught DEAD using an A55.
24p is a NECESSITY for pro movie work. A crappy bitrate of 17mbps is just flat out horrible. t2i bitrate isn't 17mbps it's 45mbps. HUGE difference. Nothing to control? LEVELS TO CONTROL!
Automatic is never, has never, and WILL NEVER be anywhere near as good as manual. Auto audio levels, auto focus, and auto exposure are all UNUSABLE in the pro video world.
@BenHughesStudios Again, with the striking assumptions and accusations. NO! The Sony would definitely suffice for professional purposes !
Who *actually* does 24p capturing using a DSLR anyway? To create actual theater movies with? Don't make me laugh!
TV is 60i / 30p -> 60i.
Bitrate. The Sony compresses much better at the same quality level because it does AVCHD. Do you can't compare bitrates 1:1. Sony has the higher quality compression algorithm resulting in smaller files w/ less bitrate.
@BenHughesStudios And look at that video I've linked to again. Pretty much the same quality. You'd *like* the Canon to somehow be a crushing blow to the Sony, but that is simply not the case at all.
24p for movie work. Rriigghhttt. For what, movie theaters? Pros don't use DSLR's for that - including the 5D mark ii.
For TV, 30p is good, because it converts to 60i, broadcast, well.
Everyone uses 24p in DSLR video and in movies in general. It's the standard for movies. It's a look people expect to see in movies. Nobody shoots movies/short films in 30p/60i.
60i/30p is for sports and soap operas. Not for movie/film work.
Even if a movie doesn't make it to theaters. the 24p look still is a necessity.
Without FULL MANUAL CONTROL, and 24p. The A55/A33 is just a T1i with autofocus. In other words: AMATEUR.
@BenHughesStudios 30p looks better than 24p. 60p looks better than 30p. People like you might be slave to the 24p religion, but the fact *IS* that higher looks better. James Cameron shares that sentiment as well. The only reason you're not seeing movies move up is cost. And cost alone. People like you are fantasizing excuses to make yourselves feel good about it. Well, it's not good. Fact is that any action in movies looks like a train wreck.
@BenHughesStudios But my issue that most MOST people that buy these DSLR's are buying it for their own personal use. No need to pretend people are "professionals" or be "like professionals".
The common consumer does not need 24p. 30p looks better. That's just a fact, whether you like that or not.
And all those consumers are horribly disappointed they're now stuck with that lack of auto focus.
The a33/55 simply makes for a better camera for the vast majority. That's a fact.
@BenHughesStudios And no, the a33/55 does a lot more than the T2i. Whereas myself am focused on the facts, you seem to be constantly expressing and relying your argument on fanboi-ism.
I did watch the video. Even the creator of it says that the A55/A33 would be only good for casual users. And the t2i blows it out of the water for filmmaking. A camera without full manual controls can never be considered professional.
Full manual controls have always been a must for film-making.
24p has always been a must for filmmaking.
Those are both CRUCIAL things that the Sony doesn't even have.
No serious filmmaker would be caught dead using a camera without those BASIC features
@BenHughesStudios No, the T2i does NOT "blow it out of the water". It's clear that the ultimate results of the video comparison shows that the quality itself is the same, and that you get the auto focus with the Sony as an added bonus.
Most people, the vast VAST majority are not "making films" and do not "require 24p" at all! And people that DO make films would get the 5D mark ii or a dedicated pro video camera.
Audio turns out just fine without having to do a damn thing. Hook up an external mic like a rode, and the audio is just fine. Nothing else to discuss there. Mute point.
Auto focus unusable? You're completely and utterly WRONG there! For things that move around, auto focus is CRUCIAL ! Besides, you can set focus to manual.
It seems that *YOU* are the one that does not know what you're talking about !
Manual audio levels are needed, and no one ever uses external mics on cameras without manual audio levels, because automatic audio levels ruins audio quality. Even with a rode videomic. Don't you know how audio recording works? It's not that simple.
Autofocus isn't reliable enough.
Pros NEVER have, and NEVER will use automatic modes.
@BenHughesStudios The Canons are ruining the audio with that AGC behavior. Not sure, but there might be a fix for that, or is it a setting you can control? Or is it a firmware update/hack that gets you access to AGC?
But you don't know how well the audio works on a Sony with an external mic. You're just making assumptions and you're being prejudice.
End of day, pros don't record on the camera, they use external recording altogether.
@BenHughesStudios And you keep somehow "win an argument" by constantly focusing on "pros". Seriously, how many *actual* pros rely on a T2i... right, practically NONE.
We're dealing with CONSUMERS here. Youtube videos are full of videos intended for CONSUMERS. By the people, for the people.
PRO-SUMERS perhaps, because they're trying hard to make good buying decisions and are willing to learn and spend.
So where does that leave us. Is the Sony a good choice?
The 5D isn't the only canon DSLR *actual* pros use. Shane Hurlburt, the cinematographer of Terminator salvation uses the 7D. The 7D is exactly the same as the t2i in video mode. The hacked t2i and t3i, and the 60D are all more advanced than the 7D in video mode.
@BenHughesStudios That still does not make the Canon the better choice for the vast majority of buyers. There is that lack of auto focus, that makes it a huge disappointment.
And end of day, I can make very decent video with my Sony that people easily will perceive as just as good as the video you shoot with your Canon.
@a1mint Plus, the Sony has an articulated screen that works MUCH better than what the T3i offers. It can also shoot in 7fps (10 fps for the a55). The stabilizer is built into the camera, which means you can use cheap old Minolta lenses and still have stabilization, some of which are really good.
And how about on-camera panorama stitching, and dynamic range options not found on the Canon.
There are other very useful features as well on the Sony.
I can admit those feature are pretty cool and all, but the problem with the Sony is that they focus on adding a bunch of extra things, yet they can't (won't actually) include some of the most basic features, like manual control and 24p.
If they come out with a firmware update that allows 24p and manual control to the a55, I'll gladly switch over, but until now, the T2i is the best in that price range for FILMMAKERS.
@BenHughesStudios I wish they provided that as well. Myself I really want 60p. And why not let the user control iso, aperture and timing. All they had to do is use the settings you already set for taking pictures! It's all just a matter of software. Allegedly, the processor and internal io is fast enough to handle 60p. Or perhaps not. The Canon does go down to 720 with 60p, for a reason, probably it being the hardware available at a cost, similar limitation in the Sony likely.
@BenHughesStudios I highly doubt Sony will do a firmware upgrade. There was rumor of a hacker having hacked it, but it was a hoax to get people to donate money.
Sony's upcoming a77 later this year should be interesting. Hopefully I can keep my Minolta lenses.
But make no mistake. The Sony is a formidable player in the photo world, and very able player in the pro-sumer video world. I really would not so hastily ridicule the competition.
What does this have to do with anything? but... I have 3. The kit lens 18-55mm, an M42 Chinon 55mm 1.7, and a Nikon mount Kiron 80-200mm f4. I could have saved up for more, but I use that other money for other video equipment...
The definition of professional is someone who does something commercially or for a job, and some say it means someone who is an expert at something. In that case, there are tons of professionals who use the T2i.
Philip bloom, the master of DSLR filmmaking, uses a T2i.

He's certainly not an expert in all available equipment.
Perhaps he's a really good film maker. And he's a major Canon fan. Good for him. But it doesn't help our discussion at all.
And I did watch the video. I already knew all that. Except the video quality is not the same. He did a poor comparison. Maybe if they used 24mbps, it would be somewhere near equal.
I'm not being a canon fanboy. The Panasonic GH2 is easily miles better than the A55/A33 too
@BenHughesStudios We covered the bitrate issue right? The Sony's AVCHD compression algorithm needing much less storage while maintaining the same quality level as the Canon's motion jpeg compression algorithm.
So, your assumptions that the Canon is totally and utterly superior in every way, was clearly false.
End of day. The Canon is a great camera? The Sony is also a great camera.
@huudiduu And why is it called EOS kiss X4 in Asia? Same names won't work in every part of the world, in the US it seems like all products need a really cool name and in Asia the need a really nice, or in some cases akward names. I don't know really but I think Europe just like that things are just numbered after all why do they name all products? (Except for standing out and making people buy things because of their names)
@MultiViews Kiss X4? Really? I believe that is true, here in Finland, most of our products (such as mobiles) are known from thei serialnumber (in case of Nokia). But for example, HTC uses mostly names (HTC Desire, Hero, Wildfire, Evo...etc...). So, the answer for my question might this: It sounds cool in the US, but it is too cool in Europe or something like that....blah.. :D
@huudiduu Yeah, but on the other hand HTC is an "True" American company. But who cares really? A product is a product we don't want it because of it's name. And here in Sweden it's the same, products are named after their model number.
@rdiaz206 I ordered my rebel t2i today! a friend of mine who makes videos sold his d90 and got rebel t2i. I would go with rebel t2i with 18meg pix, you can't go wrong. great video telemart
@rdiaz206 If you are purely interested in photography, the D90 wins with better image quality and faster frames per second. If you are interested in video as well, then the T2i is the better choice. Additionally, the T2i has a small buffer that fills up after 7 shots when shooting in RAW and the FPS slows down dramatically.
i just got mine 2 days ago!! nice video btw. I just got the Same lens do i need some kind of adapter for it to fit becuase it seems like its smaller then the 18-55 kit lens
How do I turn off the magnified view box in the shooting mode with the Canon T3i/600D (the little white box in the center of the screen). Is there anyway to turn it off?
nifty fifty!

I think 24p is bullshit. It's time that movie rate religion dies.
60p I'm missing, yes. Although not at full resolution, it'd be nice to be able to capture smoother motion.
Audio control, what would you need any? Hook up an external mic like a rode and the sound comes out just fine. Nothing to "control" really.
Video bit rate is 17mbps same as the T2i. a33 can store same quality in half the space using AVCHD.

I don't know really but I think Europe just like that things are just numbered after all why do they name all products? (Except for standing out and making people buy things because of their names)
MultiViews 1 year ago
@MultiViews Kiss X4? Really? I believe that is true, here in Finland, most of our products (such as mobiles) are known from thei serialnumber (in case of Nokia). But for example, HTC uses mostly names (HTC Desire, Hero, Wildfire, Evo...etc...). So, the answer for my question might this: It sounds cool in the US, but it is too cool in Europe or something like that....blah.. :D
huudiduu 1 year ago
@huudiduu Yeah, but on the other hand HTC is an "True" American company. But who cares really? A product is a product we don't want it because of it's name. And here in Sweden it's the same, products are named after their model number.

Guys, check your unit thoroughly. There's a bad batch of 550D out there. Do a google search for first batch of defective 550d.

I want to buy a DSLR what do you recommend?? i was looking at the new rebel or nikon d90 any suggestions thanks
rdiaz206 1 year ago
@rdiaz206 I ordered my rebel t2i today! a friend of mine who makes videos sold his d90 and got rebel t2i. I would go with rebel t2i with 18meg pix, you can't go wrong. great video telemart
Okot74 1 year ago
@rdiaz206 If you are purely interested in photography, the D90 wins with better image quality and faster frames per second. If you are interested in video as well, then the T2i is the better choice. Additionally, the T2i has a small buffer that fills up after 7 shots when shooting in RAW and the FPS slows down dramatically.

I have the 550D for fotography and film and I must say that the 550d is also very good for fotography itself. But I'm a canon guy:D

@ItsYoungDii

How do I turn off the magnified view box in the shooting mode with the Canon T3i/600D (the little white box in the center of the screen). Is there anyway to turn it off?

What file extension does the video format save as: avi? mov? mpg?
Homer :D
zleepyjan 1 year ago
@zleepyjan
it save in .mov
I just choose the file from the memory card reader and drop inthe in the timeline of final cut, but it need a render(fcp 5.1.4)
This way I don't have to save the original file on the hard drive (when its video like this one).
