I HATE COVERS I HATE COVERS I HATE COVERS - DID I MENTION I HATE COVERS - BUT SECOND NATURE RIP THIS SONG A NEW ONE - BUT I DO STILL HATE COVERS - I HATE COVERS EXCEPT MAYBE JUST THIS ONE - SEARCH SECOND NATURE - LAST CHANCE Ô¿Ô
I'm like most everyone else here, the blast of nostalgia has just exploded my brain. Mostly because I haven't heard this song in soooo long. It just isn't played on the radio anymore, no occasion to hear it. But now things will be different. I'm putting Shooting Star on my mp3 player. The Anthology album is available at amazon (higher bit rate than apple). So glad I found this on YT to remind me.
Really great forgotten/unheard of band. I saw these guys in 1983 for five bucks at Great America (before they had an amphitheatre, they played concerts in the parking lot) in Santa Clara, CA
I saw these guys open for Blue Oyster Cult. Starz opened the show. Back then there were usually 3 bands, at least here in Rochester,NY. Shooting Star stole the show.
I caught the tour 5-6 times in NY that year. Shooting Star opened for Foghat and BOC. I'm from Rochester, but was going to school near Syracuse. It was during the fall and we caught all the shows from Buffalo to NYC.
My favorite song for several years when I was in college. It boggled my mind that these guys weren't better know. Of course, that probably contributed to why I liked them. But the music can't be argued with.
Does anybody know of a band from the same era called Missouri? That band was Garys brothers band... Ron West, they both went to Hickman Mills high school in KCMO.
Yes; I knew them back then. Ron and Gary's real last name was Hodgens or Hodgson or something like that. Last I heard Gary was in the radon detection business in Olathe, KS, that was circa 1998
@shomesomethin oh ya Jeff west was his brother, they came from a very music rich family and both of them are very gifted I followed both of them and have met most of them, and there pure mid west rock. GREAt GUYS
I heard that Gary was real disenchanted with the music industry and probably just tired of the tough life on the road.. Most all of the original music I do believe was co-written by Van and Gary...And some of the newer stuff was written by the West/McLain duo as well....If you go to yahoo groups and search for ssmaniac you can keep up with the latest and greatest info on the band...Ive said this before the new lineup is AWESOME....
Ronnie Platt is the new lead singer. Van McLain is the original guitarist and still running the band. The current drummer is Steve Thomas the original drummer. Janet Jameson is the violinist and dont forget Dennis Laffoon the keyboardist and does the bas parts as well. The original lead singer was Gary West and he retired in '86 I do believe after this concert but he may have played a few more. And if you search some of the other videos I put up you will see Gary performing with SS back in March
I have seen the current lineup 3 times since March and they kick serious ass. The will be performing Friday night Sept 25th at Starlight Theatre in KC......
BUT YOUR ACTUALLY AT THEIR SHOW AS I SPEAK/TYPE wow dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wish i coulda realized that b4 this very second / ida sent $ for concert T ,or Vans autograph(if u know him) ticket stub anything.
BACK to my Question (when u recover)=am i correct in assuming their lack of "fame" was due to NO VIDEOS at a crucial time for their best songs (at that time)? whos dam idea was that?
whats their and your general concensus
YOUR opinion (& ovcourse theirs) means alot to me.THANKU
so gary hhmm... wonder why he retired so soon? tell me ,did he write the songs/lyrics with Van? did gary just sing the lyrics he was asked to sing ?or did Van just write music? i gotta know the" real " of these guys/ if u dont mind me pikin your brain, your info seems to be straitup!!
IVE JUST REDISCOVERD THEM after all these years, hey i got 1 more important Question/comment
The GREATEST rock song ever...... Who dares challenge this masterpiece??? David slays Goliath, 'Stairway to Heaven'....... "drink from life's well.... Drink from the well................" Pure magnificence...............
Charles Waltz' violin is so cool, and really gave SS their trademark sound. Thanks for posting this; one of my favorite bands!

Where are you Gary West? You were the voice that can't be replaced. You can't just let it go without one more album and tour. Do it for your fans!
