Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind was a life-changing movie for myself and many I know. Million-Dollar Baby was artificially sad. An Oscar was overdue for Hilary Swank, but at least they could have given it to her for a *good* role. And Swank had plenty of better roles.

Just goes to show what a good script and a decent screen presence can do for you- even if on a technical level, the other actors in your category stomp you flat. Swank has great screen presence.

What makes the win so memorable is that it is the classic underdog story. It was the story itself and how Hilary managed to not only stand her own alongside Clint and Morgan, but creates a character that carries what is inside all of his. It is the archetype of the dreamer who by the grace of god manages to find a surrogate father and sees that dream come to fruition. It is the connection that hopefully we caN SHARE with others to create a better life for ourselves through our dream.

lol if you look at the audience carefully, especially as Hilary Swank starts walking on the stage, you can see most people are not clapping. Even though Swank won most of the awards in the season, I don't think her win was incredibly popular; rather, I think the voting was a lot closer than people think, between Swank, Staunton, Bening, and Winslet...and Moreno to a lesser extent.
