Thank god for YouTube and it's abilty to share information. Thanks for this video. This is the second children of alcoholics clip I've seen in fifteen minutes and I'm very humbled and excited. I think my life (at 41) is about to change. Thank you.
This was such a good video. My AC parent was obsessed with money and work; children were almost invisible. I was made the scapegoat by an older sibling to divert my parents anger to me. Work used to be my only gratification; that all I was taught to value When I lost my job, I felt like my world fell apart, it's hard and I am in therapy. Looking back now I see how I am a ACOA.
What do you mean when you say ACOC's don't know what "normal" is? What do you mean by "normal"? I am 28 and recently found out through therapy that ACOA applies to me. My Dad hid his drug abuse and alcoholism... it's a long story... Are you referencing specific books on this topic? How did you become knowledgable in this area? Thank you
"normal" in this application is used to describe the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that the majority of well adjusted persons share. ACOA's unfortunately have to guess at "what normal is". We weren't raised in a normal household and treated/reared like our friends/peers were when growing up. I realized When I was in the Army. By talking to other people and asking questions about thier childhoods I realized that mine was way different and whacked out and started reading books about ACOA's.
I thank you for your efforts to video tape yourself sharing these insights, and offering the reference material data behind what you are saying. I'm an ACoA, but haven't completed my inner work...thank you again for being a beacon of direction for me.
