Eppie's Landers column was just beginning to be noticed significantly beyond Chicago. She wasn't yet the celebrity she became or the living legend. As you can see, she was quite a cookie, dressed gorgeously and was, even in this limited arena, in a way eccentric. She was a workhorse who also was a night owl and worked on her columns into the wee hours, often in her bath (!). Those who came to form a large staff for her were devoted to their mission, and that was her doing.
Thanx for posting this fascinating episode. Why did Eppie sign in as "Mrs. Jules Lederer"? That always givesaway that a lady contestant has a famous name. Ann Landers was a pen name. She could have signed in with some variation of Esther Friedman Lederer, and the panel would have not been the wiser. That Daly did not announce that she was Ann Landers in the post game interview surprises me: even in 1956, that revelation would have got a hand from the audience.
If this were 10 years later, everyone would have known "Ann Landers". She had tons of friends in show business.
And, of course, her twin sister in real life did the same for a competing Chicago paper as Dear Abby. Ann Landers daughter married Ken - forget his last name- the teacher who starred on White Shadow.
dressed down is still very classy ;-)

@TomBarristerX Why is she called "Julius?" I have never known her by this name, only by Esther or Eppie .

"Dear Abby" (a.k.a. Pauline Friedman Phillips) never made any appearances on "WML?"

Ken Howard. They were married 14 years, divorcing in 1991.
