How did you find a Diablo Rojo that has FOUR working hazard lights on the back? Unbelievable! It has got to be the only one in PTY to have more than one safety related light working at the same time.
Of course, with the greatest majority of them, all the other lights are always on, blinking away, saying "Look at ME" in typical Panamanian fashion - unnecessary and downright interfering with safety at times.
In their own right they ARE a cultural thing I suppose - but miss them I will not...!!
These buses, like the transport trucks in Afghanistan and Pakistan are colorful pieces of cultural identity. However - they are polluting, and I am sure have a dubious safety record. The new buses will undoubtedly become the main method of transport. People are reluctant to change - like banning smoking, even though it benefits their health and well being.
The evolution to the new buses is in progress, not without problem. Many Diablo Rojo drivers have such poor driving records they cannot drive the new buses. They need more drivers but overall Panama City's congested streets will be far better and safer after the transition.
I have ridden these they are fun, unless you don't like adrenalin rush. I rode one with my wife one time and it was on a one lane road and another bus was comming at us. He got out of the way. I hope some of them will stay

hahaha, I think some commenter's think you're being serious! Did they not click the link FFS! BTW, I listened to the entire song before I commented here :p
@MadStu I posted this on some Panama forums and no one has gotten the joke there. Just a bunch of outraged expats wondering who the dumb ass is that would want to save these buses.
Being someone who actually lives in a third world country I say, it's awesome that Panama is making their own public transportation. You add safety, an actual schedule and Air Conditioning? how is this not a win for the consumer?
Sounds like a US style solution to the problem. Put a bunch of privately owned buses out of business and instead spend millions on new buses that will also lose millions each year because the $0.25 fare isn't going to pay for these nice buses and the city employees that drive them. Since they're losing money, They'll have fewer buses and limit the passenger loads. That means waiting more time for buses during rush hour. And the worse thing, they'll likely ban livestock on these new buses.
I mean I understand the cultural history, but how is having "air conditioned and fuel efficient buses" a bad thing? (Come on, think green!) I've been on those damned buses and lemme tell you. The nice artwork ain't worth becoming a human sardine...

No reason why they can paint the new buses with beautiful pics and then start enforcing safe driving laws - or is that too simple?

@olecodjur Never try to use reason and logic when dealing with Panama.
