Can't really see the benefit of performing such a landing on a bird that big and heavy. I'm sure the damage far outweighs the latter. Glad I always flew civilian while I was in....they land a bit softer.
@TinnInches it was made to take a banging, when they are in combat areas they land and take off like this to stay above small arms fire and rpgs as long as possible, then instead of a 3 degree decent its more like 21 degree because they would be closer to FOB and should have friendlies around the area so there shouldnt be small arms fire pop shots at them when they are a couple miles from the base. youtube blue angels fat albert and its a c130 that performs it well.
Always think they are coming in to hot cause the plane sits so high. I bet it's hard to judge the approach speed and degree of pitch. All the vids I've seen make it look like the land flat with like 0 degrees of pitch up.
it's rush to see them land and take off and the cockpit is baddass 2 HUDS i'm all for that,C17 is a baddass plane looks like its going through the air so slow, but so big.
Brings back some good memories of flying into or driving to North Field my dad is from the town of North strange looks when you say your are from North South Carolina. Forget the name of the BBQ place but some dam good BBQ. Retired now 24+ thanks to all that still serve.
I know that. But you're still stupid because you're so uptight that you couldn't disengage your "I-have-to-correct-EVERYBODY-because-it-gives-me-an-excuse-to-feel-good-about-my-miserable-self" circuit long enough to appreciate a good joke.
An assault landing in a C-17 is steeper because of the flaps on the jet than a normal glidepath. It's a unique feature of the jet. Rather than 3 degrees, it more like 5 degrees. From this zoomed in video it is hard to see it, but that's the difference. Plus, that runway is only 3500 x 90. Take that into account when you watch it again and see how quickly it actually slows down. Not too shabby.
So an F-15 and a C-17 are flying together. The F-15 pilot says, "Hey watch this!" and does a bunch of showy aerobatics. The C-17 pilot says, "cool, but watch this!" The C-17 flies straight for five minutes. The C-17 pilot gets back on the radio and says "Was that cool, or what?" "What the hell was that?" the fighter jock says. "I got up, took a piss, got some coffee, flirted with the flight engineer, and came back here."
/watch?v=VH-KDGRwwck - Russian documentary about NATO transport aviation with English subs. Including C-17 Globemaster III, C-141 Starlifter, C-5 Galaxy.
Come in as fast as you can and stop the plane in the shortest distance possible. The C-17 is good at this because of its advanced wing design and reversible engines.
if you can find it ha ha......i remember having to drive up there one night at three am for a tire change, thank God the fire dept. staff is from Charleston, we called them and got directions and actually made it up there, ha ha
assault landings just apply different physics to vertical navigation. If done correctly, most of the descent momentum is gone. takes a well built aircraft.
AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN, I wondering how that always got broke and cracked, the copilot grabbing on to it....i hated fixing that..... i miss that plane even more than the the AC's
Land aircraft in the first 500 feet of the airfield and stop within the 3,500 length available. Can be done on a dirt runway with a 70-ton Abrahms M1A1 tank on board!
Must be a huge wind from the right, he had to crab and correct quite a bit in the last 1000 feet (balls on centerline!) 4 years of flying these babies out of McChord. Nice touchdown.
That is one hell of a dirty runway, lots of rubber there.

Are the requirements for flying cargo planes such as the c-130 or the c17 the same as fighter planes? as in like color blind, and vision?
