This is not a dressage COMPETITION move but it is a movement from the "old school" just as the airs above the ground performed by the Spanish Riding School or the movements practiced by the Cadre Noir. The only important thing is that it is trained WELL. And this horse has a very nice canter to the rear and is submissive and balanced, though he loses it a bit at the end. It is an extremely difficult movement and cannot be forced or it will be very ugly.
Oberbereiter Meixner and Ernst Lindenbauer..both classical dressage riders and instructors, from my knowledge were able to play a horse into cantering backwards....is it unnatural..maybe but if you look at the horse in the video...it never seems to have its pole go past vertical in any of the movements...there is no sign of distress or sudden flicks in the tail...in losing rythem and momentum in the canter there does seem to be a lack of communication between the backward movement and a levade q
The Baucher system, mentioned by Steinberg as the backward system seems not to be eradicable... I rather like to ride my horses forward and hate people who try to do so backwards... This video is disgusting!
Not that you get me wrong, a horse should be willingly able to back up...
@bowhuntingrider i tryed to ride my horse backward the other day... he turned around and smelled my leg like "wtf are you doin? That isnt how you go... ur not rideing right and im not moveing so :P" lol
The Spanish walk isn't entirely unnatural. I've seen countless horses walk up to each other, nose to nose, and throw up their front legs to show off. The more dominant the horse's temperament, the more often this behavior will be seen, and the easier it is to teach them to Spanish walk.
The "canter to the rear" while being a spectacular show of training, and the horse seems to be in no distress, is something I've NEVER seen a horse do in the wild.
@perfectstorm101 I agree with you, however I would not do it like that myself, but there used to be a classical excercise called terre-a-terre which looks a bit like canter and can be performed backwards. When you actually need to work with a horse as in herding cows or fighting wars or something like that, you actually require a movement like that in order not to get killed (you and the horse)
@mpluvinel the best horse trainers in the world do this with there horses and they love there horses and wouldnt do anything to harm them why do you people even care its a video on youtube i dought these people are going to listen anyway all these people sound retarted trying to act all sufisticated and crap and trust me if a horse dosent want to do something or its uncomfortable they will show it okay you dont do it that way then do it your way everyone just SHUT UP CAUSE YOU SOUND RETARTED!
@perfectstorm101 I certainly did not mean to offend you, so there is no need for harsh words, all I said was that I prefer terre-a-terre, I didn't say the video was bad.
As far as your answer is concerned: I live in a free country where every one has the right to say even the most stupid thing, therefore I will certainly not shut up no matter how I sound.
@mpluvinel oh god this is what im taking about i wasnt just saying it to you i was saying it to everyone on this video im not stupid i live in america too okay and its a shame because now i know why other countries hate americans cause there so stuck up and are always having to put there opinions where no one wants them if you have nothing nice to say dont say it at all im done here you dont get it how would you like it if peoiple where critisizing the way you ride a personaly could care less!
@perfectstorm101 Oh my lord. People like you DO give Americans a bad name. Present a valid argument and for the love of God use some punctuation! Anyways, About the video.... I think this is a complicated movement worth praise, maybe not in "classical" dressage because it is awkward and lacking true rhythm, but altogether not as bad as people are saying. I think some people just WANT to complain.
@RidingTemptation if one thinks Rollkur is beautiful, i could see how one would say this is beautiful too. no momentum, no rhythm, and completely unnatural. where has classical training gone? dolphins jumping through hoops to music to some is "beautiful", but doesn't mean it should be done.
I read a book, a few years ago, that James Fillis was such a great rider, he could even canter backwards (with a horse). I searched for pictures or videos, but of course I couldnt find any. He died 1913.
So I thought I would never see such a masterly performance.
You can hardly argue that this is unnatural, then defend "correct dressage movements". If you're willing to teach a horse to trot on the spot, then why not teach it how to "canter" backwards? Technically, nearly all dressage movements are unnatural.
This is not a true movement of dressage that I know of. I agree with Spottie, this is unnatural, the horse has lost his rhythm and is over bent. It is sad to me to hear people think this is beautiful. It is definitely not classical dressage.
@namastejjk it is beautiful not because it is "classical dressage" or anything like that it is beautiful because this proves that who ever this is spends hours upon hours with this horse earning his trust and respect. someone who has their horse trained for them could never acomplish this with their horse, because this takes ultamate respect mate and whether or not it is natural or not makes no difference. if you think about itriding in its self is not natural so who cares if its not 'normal'
this is great! to all the people saying that its not a real canter and its sloppy and crap. Its not one of those things you could just get on a horse and do! it takes an extremely advanced rider and a good horse to do this! its hard! the rider was really great about this!
i think this may be slightly uncomfortable for the horse, but i hightly doubt it is painful. if this horse in pain it would most likely be acting up and make it quite obvious. and its not like your making him do it for hours on end. 19 seconds. it truely doesnt seem the least bit cruel or harmful to me, hope people dont continue to rant on and on about this, but if they do just remember if this horse was honestly in "pain" then it would show it, horses are strong enough to break out of this.
Spottie, I totally agree with you. I mean, seriously, are horses meant to canter backwards? I'm only 13 but I'm guessing if they do that alot it's gonna wreck the horses muscles and natural footfalls? collected canter going forwards sounds much more pleasant.
I do not feel like this is natural. I believe Pluvinel was known for this movement, along with the canter on three legs. This horse is also overbent and has lost the rhythm of the canter. I do not think this kind of riding should be encouraged, this horse's comfort and dignity has been sacrificed for circus tricks. You may attack me if you wish, but this is not an example of correct dressage and I know many peope will agree.

most people who flame awesome vids like this don't know the first thing about horses. they make stupid comments just because they're bored and watch youtube videos all day because they have nothing better to do.
i personally thought this w as absolutely amazing. and to all of you saying how "bad it is" and how "it's not right", why don't you try training a horse to do that? It takes YEARS to get a horse just to do that. Plus, Empresslllyria's right. I've seen a whole lot of dressage vids (more than you think!), and i have NEVER seen anything remotely like this.
i didn't really find this beautiful: the hind looked awkward and the steps just looked random, no sync whatsoever. however, teaching a horse to do that takes a lot of work and i applaud the trainer.
Wow, that is so incredible! Ignore the haters, they are just idiots who don't understand how hard it is to train a horse to be so collected and controlled.
@generalj02 gallop is actually 4. if u watch a slow motion video of a horse in gallop - or even in full speed really - u can see that the two front and two hind legs hit the ground one at a time, otherwise a galloping horse would look like a bunny hopping accross a racecourse... you can even see it when ur galloping and u look down at the horses front legs (whilst staying in a central position so as not to disrupt the horses balance - in gallop thats not a pretty sight!) (:
@emsbox hmmm okay...i dunno why i thoguht that...probably seen it somewhere... dunno where tho... possibly for some show but it probably needs to be taught like most things would :I
I'm pretty sure that if this was such a "spectacular display of collection," it would be a legit movement found in tests regularly... which last time I check, it isn't. And I don't care if the horse enjoys it or not, it's awkward and goofy looking! INow 'm sure it does take lots of training and talent to get a horse to do that, no doubt. But like jumping a lame horse over a 4ft fence... just because it CAN doesn't mean it SHOULD.
@punkrockluvr6886 Seriously? It is absolutely AMAZING for someone to get a horse to do that, even of that caliber. It looked slightly awkward because it WAS trying and it looked excited. Any trainer who can get a horse to do this has my total and complete respect.
@punkrockluvr6886 SHUTTTT THE FUCK UP THEY DONT CARE omg you all sound retarted i dought the person fucking cares cause YOU GUYS SOUND RETARTED not that i disagree with you but just shut up already
im not sure if technically this is a canter, there were i think two maybe three steps backwards with three beats, non the less, absolutely amazing and spectacular to watch. great job, its something i couldnt get my horses to do, i loved it.
You know the dressage federation has finally ruled that the pirouette is actually a 4 beat canter? and considering this backwards canter is very a very similar movement, the fact that the horse is 4 beating does not bother me at all. It is required to do this movement, as it is required to do a pirouette. Well done you have a beautiful and willing horse.
my comment is this ......being a 6 time national champion being jugded under the head of the spanish riding academy.......i can't believe that youn's are so jealous of something that may not be of the standard in a dressage test...but the whole idea is in dressage(meaning training).....if youn's forgot..is that a horse is responsive to its rider to be able to do....the ultimate in performance.......not to be scored....but to be admired for the communication..between horse and rider....jealous

this video is very cool in my opinion. No, I am not a dressage fanatic, but I still find this intresting. Okay and if you guys have critique, keep it to yourselves. It clearley doesn't ask or any. And stop with the rudeness the channel owner obviouly isn't appreciating it, and doesn't deserve it.
@FearNot1823 the channel owner needs to relax. ANyone who wants excel at ANYTHING must be willing to accept criticism, and the input and views of others. This horse started off well, then got lost in what it was suppose to be doing, it started to lift it's feet at random instead of in a canter pattern and then started to go backwards and appears to go into the start of a levade to try and understand what it was supposed to be doing. The movement is full of faults, no matter how hard it is
I LOVE this video and often come back to watch it when I need inspiration. Thank you for uploading- despite the comments of some, I think this horse and rider are fantastic.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hey, all you faggoty fuckers! except PiafferMisterJ and EmpressIllyria. You all don't know shit. you guys think that your little fucking ponys you ride back home doing your posting trott is SO GOOD, take the horse dick out your ass's and see that this shit is fucking sick! PEACE OUT HORSE FAGGOTS
I was searching "backwards canter". A friend of mine told me there was a guy famous for it way back when. Can't remember his name or I would have searched for that instead. I study the "art". I think its neat.. I see no reason to argue about it. The horse does not look discontent doing it. That's what matters to me.
this person uploaded this video so we could enjoy it! not so you could analyze it to death! jeez! and idk if this is true, but the person videoing probably doesnt even know this rider well (sorry if im wrong) and i doubt they would walk up and say that some utuber told him to do something diiferent so your criticism is pointless!
thank you verry much for uploading this, i enjoyed watching it. its amazing what they can make there horses do
if just confused. A canter is a 3 beat gate. And since he was on the left lead he should have gone in order back right, back left, front right, than front left. And he does at 1st than just starts picking them all up randomly. Ya its collected. Ya its backwards. But i wouldn't really call that a "canter"?
This discussion has already taken place in this topic (scroll back a few pages)
MY point of view is that "it is what it INTENDS TO BE" because clearly itis NOT a PIAFFE, and what it tries to be is clear enough to even a casual observer.
IT IS NOT PERFECT, that is not in being disputed, WHAT IT IS is not competiton, it is EXHIBITION and CELEBRATION of what IS POSSIBLE. and in that vein, it is a display of a movement that is rarely ever attempted, and most people dont ever think is possible
@MrGabeismyBabe Can I just say your arguement would have been better if you had said "Yeah" or "yes" instead of..."ya". Also, cantering backwards is very very difficult. I highly doubt any hrose could get it exactly right every single time
@MrGabeismyBabe well, since it's a four-beat, then it must be a backward gallop! and i'd assume, even at that, a backward, super collected gallop is something to be amazed by. -sarcasm- its just awesome. now appreciate it.
I'm surprised that anything backwards is included in a dressage routine...Dressage is so focused on forwards and upwards motions that I would think this would encourage a horse to suck back behind the bit. I'm not saying I could do it better, but it's strange that they do it at all. Beautiful horse though :-)
Well it not actually a competiive routine so rules and formula gets thrown out he window in favor of theory.
One theory for this, much like theJambete movement is that teaching the horse to bring the rear legs foward helps deveop back strength and flexibility and accustoms the horse to understand greater subtlty in the aids as well as having a greater comfort for producing any movement in collection, The training movement itself is not the goal,
This IS NOT a dressage move at all. Its not good that a horse can do that...they should not do it...its fancy but not correct. What purpose does this serve and its proves to be a detrement to your training... just like hyperflexion of the neck. Rhinestone cowboy...maybe...dressage master...NOT!!
While we are all entitled to an opinion, this trainer/rider is a competitor at world level and participant in several Olympic games, I am sure based on your extremely judgemental comment that you must have some comperable achievements to go with your boastful position.
I know I will never convince a person like you that loss of rhythm stepping out stepping back are fatal flaws in pirouettes . Wide behind is also a flaw. All of these defects are cause for insufficient scores.
If you wish to install those qualities in your horse feel free. While you are at it teach it to hop on one hoof.
WHAT I am saying is that there i MORE to the world than JUST cold hard math! I appriciate perfection and flawlessness as much as anyone, and I DO know how to recognize imperfection.
HOWEVER what it is tha I AM saying, is that I do NOT belive that EVERY SINGLE MOMENT needs to be pulled apart and hyperanalyzed. When someone gets SO OBSESSED with looking for flaws in something they will also tend to FORGET TO APPRICIATE what is RIGHT or even simply GOOD about it also.
AND just for clarity, while you are so quick to criticize and even attack me like a religious zealot for not thinking in the same box as you, I should point out that in the CLASSICAL ART from which the sport you love so much evolved, they HAVE taught horse to hop up and down (more or less, albeit not one foot as that is close to a biomechanical imposibiity) aready in several different movements movements.
Pehaps you should study the HISTORY of your sport as much as you worship its formulas
Its funy how you will say put up or shut up and have still NOT uploaded anything.
AND seem to think that you are somehow important enough that I would have to prove anything to you at all. My life is in a rebuilding phase at the moment, since my prze mare was injured, and my new exhibtion horse is 4 years old and stil in her compulsaries. THIS is my channel... I am hosting the video, if it offends you SOO PROFOUNDLY, you can go do something of your own!
I have stewarded and placed classes for judges who valued my insights AS WELL as trained at Samur in the NON SPORTIVE aspect of the clasical art. I have trained several horses to class 4 in competition, and DO know how to recognize quality in it. HOWEVER I do not agree with the limited idea that all things must be without flaw. IF you have ever trained for sport yourself and inded ride 5 horses a day, YOU SHOULD be keely aware that they ARE NOT machines who step perfectly every time.
@wejump2 I find it very hard to believe a judge,an experienced equestrian, would wave his or her title around on youtube like a brat. Especially when the owner of this account is not even the one riding.
I AM actually schooled in the sport, I just happen to have a PREFERANCE for the ART.
And there IS a huge difference in the ways of thinking between the two. Anyone can perform "paint by numbers", not everyone can form abstract thoughts on their own, clearly.
If you dont like my videos you can get OFF my channel!
That is not canter. Canter is the outside hind leg the diagonal pair and the inside fore. That rythm goes away and thus is some thing other then canter.
And yet not deviated far enough to be recognizable as ANY OTHER movement either. It is what it endeavors to be, and is recognizably an effort to performing.
If you have a better example of a perfect textbook canter on the spot, or moving backward at all, I am sure the world would be the richer for seeing it, by all means...
To what purpose does even riding at horse at all cater to in the modern era?
Dressage is french for to train or school, so it is infact a dressage movement, Not every movement is done for the sake of the movement itself. Some movements are serving the purpose of muscular development or even personal amusement. however you are correct in that it is not a part of the competitive sport.
Perhaps he does, but how many times have you EVER seen ahorse perform it at all? I can count on one hand how many horses I have ever seen schooled to this movement. What it may lack in perfection, it makes up for by just being presented at all.
It is not always about being the very best in all the land, sometimes the best you can be is good enough, But since you are so quick to compare and criticize, perhaps you would love to show the world your own horse doing it better.
And what you do not seem to be getting is that I do not share your perspecitve, and am not going to be convinced that it is the only way.
By your logic of can and should, WHY do we even ride them AT ALL? Obviously we CAN, but SHOULD we? What practical aplication does it serve in our current modern world? I believe that experimentation is the only way to really develop a full sense of the potential of things.
oh u are on of those people that think all types of riding are put into one category: Dressage....hello wat do you call bronco riding.. duh, your probs just some chick that loves horses and is obsessed with making horse videos and watching them
Nope I ride dressage and a bit of western. I started with western then moved into english. Bronco riding is just trying to stay on a sour horse people do it every day. I have no intention of feeding you further.
i know this is said a lot but, riding is a sport i can prove it if u like! Dressage itself is the entire basics of riding in any form! when you halfhalt where did that come from?!? DRESSAGE! Dressage means training. u have to train be exeptional at a sport. i lost my point...ANYWAY. think befor you speak. people who dont know what they r talking about and try to make it look like they do...just make me sick...not trying to be nasty
@ilovechase77 "duh, your probs just some chick that loves horses and is obsessed with making horse videos and watching them " and what are you then? i'm sure every girl that rides loves horses if they didn't they probably were forced by their parents, i sure love my horses but i'm not obsessed with making vids and watching them
It is a sport, that's why it's in the Olympics. The horse has to perform a variety of complicated and sometimes unnatural maneuver, horses used in dressage need to have a lot of concentration in order to do these movements
The riders, on the other hand, need to have a good seat so they don't risk unbalancing the horse, critically in pirouettes where they need balance. Riders also need to concentrate very hard on where their horse is position wise (especially in half-pass and pirouette moves)
you do not hold the reins tight. you hold them as far down as you have contact- huge difference. besides that, whether you think it is a sport or hobby or whatever, it takes years and years to get to this level of horsemanship. that deserves some respect.
Perhaps you should look up the definition of the word "SPORT", because as the dictionary defines it, a sport is pretty much ANY activity persued for amusement
@ilovechase77 i obviously see you have never ridden dressage. i takes muscle and a lot of training on both the horse and rider to get to where the pros are. i doubt you've ever even rode a horse
@live2ride6692 I did dressage when i first started ride and its boring. Dude for your imformation, i break and train horses, doubt you can ride any better than i can
@ilovechase77 Never said i could ride any better and dressage isn't boring at the high levels especially the kur which is musical dressage, you just really don't know how to appreciate the basis of all horse training
@ilovechase77 and dressage isn't about holding the reins tight and using leg aids it requires years of training and muscle you're just saying that because you think it's so BORING.and i seen you barrel race I've barrel raced too but moved to jumping I just think barrels is so much more boring, yeah sure you can go fast but it gets kinda old going in the same pattern over and over and it gets boring for the horse too that's why I've seen so many messed up barrel horses
@live2ride6692 Explain how they are messed up, if its because they rear and cary on at the start line that isnt messed up its good because the horse only does that because it wants to go, it enjoys doing what it is bred to do.
@ilovechase77 no i've seen horses run the barrels so many times that anticipate it or once they enter the arena they just take off with no control from the rider. barrels is not all about speed if you can't collect a horse to turn perfect then you are just adding seconds to your time and a good barrel horse shouldn't be rearing they should learn to be patient and quiet.
@ilovechase77 i've been riding barrels my whole life, just recently switched to jumping, and i've trained my horse to do this and my fastest time ever was a 15.436
@ilovechase77 yea actually i saw a video of Guy Mclean doing a backwards canter like you said , but it really wasn't that all the horse was doing was kinda hopping to the side or in place no backwards movement whatsoever
ugliest thing I've ever seen!

I read a book, a few years ago, that James Fillis was such a great rider, he could even canter backwards (with a horse). I searched for pictures or videos, but of course I couldnt find any. He died 1913.
So I thought I would never see such a masterly performance.
Thank you very much.

Breaking and Riding-by James Fillis...quite an interesting book. He also was able to train his horses to canter on three legs.

Wow; this is truly collected. Beautiful horse as well. Thanks for putting this up! :D

You can hardly argue that this is unnatural, then defend "correct dressage movements". If you're willing to teach a horse to trot on the spot, then why not teach it how to "canter" backwards? Technically, nearly all dressage movements are unnatural.
owlandflamingo 1 year ago
This is not a true movement of dressage that I know of. I agree with Spottie, this is unnatural, the horse has lost his rhythm and is over bent. It is sad to me to hear people think this is beautiful. It is definitely not classical dressage.
namastejjk 1 year ago 52
@namastejjk it is beautiful not because it is "classical dressage" or anything like that it is beautiful because this proves that who ever this is spends hours upon hours with this horse earning his trust and respect. someone who has their horse trained for them could never acomplish this with their horse, because this takes ultamate respect mate and whether or not it is natural or not makes no difference. if you think about itriding in its self is not natural so who cares if its not 'normal'
LittleMustangMare 1 year ago
this is great! to all the people saying that its not a real canter and its sloppy and crap. Its not one of those things you could just get on a horse and do! it takes an extremely advanced rider and a good horse to do this! its hard! the rider was really great about this!
showjumpingirl21 1 year ago
i think this may be slightly uncomfortable for the horse, but i hightly doubt it is painful. if this horse in pain it would most likely be acting up and make it quite obvious. and its not like your making him do it for hours on end. 19 seconds. it truely doesnt seem the least bit cruel or harmful to me, hope people dont continue to rant on and on about this, but if they do just remember if this horse was honestly in "pain" then it would show it, horses are strong enough to break out of this.
mawazhere13 1 year ago
Spottie, I totally agree with you. I mean, seriously, are horses meant to canter backwards? I'm only 13 but I'm guessing if they do that alot it's gonna wreck the horses muscles and natural footfalls? collected canter going forwards sounds much more pleasant.

I do not feel like this is natural. I believe Pluvinel was known for this movement, along with the canter on three legs. This horse is also overbent and has lost the rhythm of the canter. I do not think this kind of riding should be encouraged, this horse's comfort and dignity has been sacrificed for circus tricks. You may attack me if you wish, but this is not an example of correct dressage and I know many peope will agree.

i must agree
but the canter is four beats, so therefore you should change it to backward traveling gallop! haha
its fine though
almost every dressage pirouette is 4 beats nowadays :)
thebluebot 1 year ago
@thebluebot noo mon canter is 3 walk is 4 trot is 2 nd gallop is 4 or 2
generalj02 1 year ago
@generalj02 yeah i dont know who taught you the gaits of a horse
but a gait cant be multiple options. a gallop is 4 walk is 4 canter is 3 trot is 2
thats why more than half of the pirouettes done at the olympics actually werent canter pirouettes at all because they were all 4 beats.
thebluebot 1 year ago
@thebluebot gallop can be 2 or 4 my friend, both front legs moving at the same time and the 2 back legs moving at the same time
generalj02 1 year ago
@generalj02 yeah its possibly, but extremely frowned upon. its over bending on the inside rein and needs to be corrected.
thebluebot 1 year ago
@thebluebot okay :) wernt me that did it i just saw it somwhere... but it wont hurt a horse i hope...
generalj02 1 year ago
@generalj02 it does, just like kyperflexion in the neck, except sideways, not up and down
thebluebot 1 year ago
@generalj02 gallop is actually 4. if u watch a slow motion video of a horse in gallop - or even in full speed really - u can see that the two front and two hind legs hit the ground one at a time, otherwise a galloping horse would look like a bunny hopping accross a racecourse... you can even see it when ur galloping and u look down at the horses front legs (whilst staying in a central position so as not to disrupt the horses balance - in gallop thats not a pretty sight!) (:

azm150 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure that if this was such a "spectacular display of collection," it would be a legit movement found in tests regularly... which last time I check, it isn't. And I don't care if the horse enjoys it or not, it's awkward and goofy looking! INow 'm sure it does take lots of training and talent to get a horse to do that, no doubt. But like jumping a lame horse over a 4ft fence... just because it CAN doesn't mean it SHOULD.
Good horse? awkward, but it tries.
Good trainer? not so much.
punkrockluvr6886 1 year ago 14
@punkrockluvr6886 Seriously? It is absolutely AMAZING for someone to get a horse to do that, even of that caliber. It looked slightly awkward because it WAS trying and it looked excited. Any trainer who can get a horse to do this has my total and complete respect.

The movement is full of faults, no matter how hard it is

if just confused.

EmpressIllyria 2 years ago 36
@MrGabeismyBabe Can I just say your arguement would have been better if you had said "Yeah" or "yes" instead of..."ya". Also, cantering backwards is very very difficult. I highly doubt any hrose could get it exactly right every single time
MadameRuusu 11 months ago
@MrGabeismyBabe well, since it's a four-beat, then it must be a backward gallop! and i'd assume, even at that, a backward, super collected gallop is something to be amazed by. -sarcasm- its just awesome. now appreciate it.
anotherjosephine 10 months ago
I'm surprised that anything backwards is included in a dressage routine...Dressage is so focused on forwards and upwards motions that I would think this would encourage a horse to suck back behind the bit. I'm not saying I could do it better, but it's strange that they do it at all. Beautiful horse though :-)
Kolibri2005 2 years ago 2

BonnieV123 2 years ago
While we are all entitled to an opinion, this trainer/rider is a competitor at world level and participant in several Olympic games, I am sure based on your extremely judgemental comment that you must have some comperable achievements to go with your boastful position.
EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
I know I will never convince a person like you that loss of rhythm stepping out stepping back are fatal flaws in pirouettes . Wide behind is also a flaw. All of these defects are cause for insufficient scores.
If you wish to install those qualities in your horse feel free. While you are at it teach it to hop on one hoof.
wejump2 2 years ago
WHAT I am saying is that there i MORE to the world than JUST cold hard math! I appriciate perfection and flawlessness as much as anyone, and I DO know how to recognize imperfection.
HOWEVER what it is tha I AM saying, is that I do NOT belive that EVERY SINGLE MOMENT needs to be pulled apart and hyperanalyzed. When someone gets SO OBSESSED with looking for flaws in something they will also tend to FORGET TO APPRICIATE what is RIGHT or even simply GOOD about it also.
EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
AND just for clarity, while you are so quick to criticize and even attack me like a religious zealot for not thinking in the same box as you, I should point out that in the CLASSICAL ART from which the sport you love so much evolved, they HAVE taught horse to hop up and down (more or less, albeit not one foot as that is close to a biomechanical imposibiity) aready in several different movements movements.
Pehaps you should study the HISTORY of your sport as much as you worship its formulas

EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
That is not canter. Canter is the outside hind leg the diagonal pair and the inside fore. That rythm goes away and thus is some thing other then canter.
wejump2 2 years ago
And yet not deviated far enough to be recognizable as ANY OTHER movement either. It is what it endeavors to be, and is recognizably an effort to performing.
If you have a better example of a perfect textbook canter on the spot, or moving backward at all, I am sure the world would be the richer for seeing it, by all means...
EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
Backwards serves little purpose. The simple truth is that close does not make it a canter.
The very collected canter does serve a purpose that with out it pirouets would not be possible.
Dressage is about getting the most of of clear gaits without tension.
What ever that thing was it was not a dressage movement.
wejump2 2 years ago 3
To what purpose does even riding at horse at all cater to in the modern era?
Dressage is french for to train or school, so it is infact a dressage movement, Not every movement is done for the sake of the movement itself. Some movements are serving the purpose of muscular development or even personal amusement. however you are correct in that it is not a part of the competitive sport.
EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
Thats not cantering backwards, Guy Mcleans horse does it way better
ilovechase77 2 years ago
Perhaps he does, but how many times have you EVER seen ahorse perform it at all? I can count on one hand how many horses I have ever seen schooled to this movement. What it may lack in perfection, it makes up for by just being presented at all.
It is not always about being the very best in all the land, sometimes the best you can be is good enough, But since you are so quick to compare and criticize, perhaps you would love to show the world your own horse doing it better.
EmpressIllyria 2 years ago
I am at this time working on the very collected canter. I would never try to do that "thing" on any horse that I ride.
You seem to not get that being able to do a thing on a horse does not mean that you should.
wejump2 2 years ago
And what you do not seem to be getting is that I do not share your perspecitve, and am not going to be convinced that it is the only way.
By your logic of can and should, WHY do we even ride them AT ALL? Obviously we CAN, but SHOULD we? What practical aplication does it serve in our current modern world? I believe that experimentation is the only way to really develop a full sense of the potential of things.

Riders also need to concentrate very hard on where their horse is position wise (especially in half-pass and pirouette moves)

live2ride6692 1 year ago
@ilovechase77 and dressage isn't about holding the reins tight and using leg aids it requires years of training and muscle you're just saying that because you think it's so BORING.and i seen you barrel race I've barrel raced too but moved to jumping I just think barrels is so much more boring, yeah sure you can go fast but it gets kinda old going in the same pattern over and over and it gets boring for the horse too that's why I've seen so many messed up barrel horses
live2ride6692 1 year ago
@live2ride6692 Explain how they are messed up, if its because they rear and cary on at the start line that isnt messed up its good because the horse only does that because it wants to go, it enjoys doing what it is bred to do.
ilovechase77 1 year ago
@ilovechase77 no i've seen horses run the barrels so many times that anticipate it or once they enter the arena they just take off with no control from the rider. barrels is not all about speed if you can't collect a horse to turn perfect then you are just adding seconds to your time and a good barrel horse shouldn't be rearing they should learn to be patient and quiet.
live2ride6692 1 year ago
