  • A guy tried the "You broke my glasses" con on me once.

For more about con artists see my video:

    William Rodriguez: the Wrong Man

  • That's a good video!

Back where I come from, the scam artists are mostly Eastern European travellers who come for the summer season. They are pretty camera shy, and will usually bark a bit, but then leave, when they see a camera.

  • ive learned tons of these street cons, tricks, numbers cons, and other things like lockpicking. i would not make a life out of it, afterall its not good mney in most cases. instead i just use it to impress friends or get the job done stuff like that

  • or you can be really good at shuffling and not need extra people working for you. then when someone wins, it's just dumb luck and your winnings will offset the loss

  • The only time the mexican turnover would be used is if the operator (the guy throwing the cards) was working alone. He would rarely use this move however because its is pretty risky (though you can pull it off when needed) He would probably rely more on moves such as the double hype (showing 2 losing cards so the mark thinks they found the right card) However you will rarely see an operator working alone. If you ever do odds are its someone who learned how the game work and wanted to try it out

  • you do the mexican turnover with bent cards?

for 20 bucks mate im pretty sure they would just let him win 1

ive seen hustlers make hundreds off of marks

  • Speaking as a magician, I can tell you that a true hustler on the streets would never use the move called mexican turnover. It's a bold and very risky move (and would only be used as a last resort, if you where to work without any shills).

A regular hustler would never allow for any of his marks to touch his cards, but only let them point. If the mark by chance should point to the right card, a shill would enter and make a higher bet on a wrong card. Also known as "highest bet only"

  • Excellent video.

I love learning about stuff like this.

Most people I know are so naive.

  • u do ppl even play they always most of the time lose

  • they will mug you

  • back in early to mid 90s, there were ton of them in the broadway area.

  • Question? How much money did you lose? You must have lost a pretty penny because this is very near and dear to your heart.

  • Hi Screech!

  • Let me look this up...

    Yes, here it is...

Reason #1,834,553-B that I hate cities.

  • Interesting. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • I know a guy who bought a sealed cardboard-boxed "cell phone" from a guy on a Manhattan street. When he opened the package, the "cell phone" turned out to be a brick.

That was back when cell phones WERE roughly the size and weight of bricks, when they first came out on the mass market.

He was a New Yorker, too.

  • en.wikipedia. org/wiki/List_of_English_words_of_Yiddish_origin

  • got it, thx

  • @McConsumer what is it ?

  • Nice vid. :)

  • ...Aside from that, the conman did the throwing technique every single time a victim played, that was more than enough in all cases.

I also want to add that most of the time there was only one other person working with the conman, maybe two. And it seemed to me that the scam is really rampant in 3rd world countries. I saw 3 different monte games within the same day in Argentina, I've only seen one game in Mexico but they used an entirely different aproach, based on distraction and intimidation

  • Thanks for sharing :)

  • red card(monte) has been making a comback over the last few years and in reality a good team will have around 5 people working together(however the money is not a even 5-way split of course)

too many people(as with anything) want to meet the minimal requirments of of something and then do it. Some of these guys out there dont fully understand the game, its pure psychology that draws people in and takes their money. true the mexican turnover is never used in the street.

  • I just stumbled upon this video and I just had to comment about it. You are giving a lot of misinformation while pretending to know what you are talking about. First of all the game is called Monte, and the switch is actually made before the victim choses a card. A mexican turnover is just used as a last resort and only if the victim seems weak beacuse it's pretty risky. Most of the time the victim is allowed to turn the card he choses. It seems that you just found some old article on the web

  • My background came from "Three-card Monte" on Wikipedia. You can add Monte as one of the names, though I think I'm safe using their title.

That page describes the throw technique which I assume you're referring to. I left it out because my recollection of the hand I saw used the turnover, and because I can't avoid cutting relevant information in a short piece. It'd probably be better if I'd included it. Though experts always get mad when they see their subject trimmed for length.

  • Yeah! Your video remind me of the wiki article, that was in fact the article I was referring to, but I didn't want the comment to feel like an insult or too cocky or something.

I am not an expert, I just happen to like card games and tricks. I have to say that I've personally seen monte in 3 different countries, France, Mexico and Argentina and the only time I saw someone do the Mexican Turnover it caused quite a ruckus because the victim suspected the trickery...

  • @lonevagrantwolf Yeah you switch up the cards while shuffling.

  • lol everyone at the table is in on it

  • Comment removed

  • wow that's so interesting

  • Wow, all that for four dollars. That's quite sad.

  • LMAO! You are insane! in a good way though

  • I got taken on a shell game when I was like 14. I just KNEW which card it was, and the whole thing down exactly as described here. Lost $20 and learned an important lesson about the world that day. :)

  • This is news? This guy must be from Iowa or some farm land. Does he know that almost anything he buys in NYC is bootleg China crap? Will he be surprised that NYC cops are on the take? Does he know that NYC has the highest fake Jew population? Does he know not to buy within 5 miles from 42st? Why? Because all those Israeli owned electronic stores sell broken items in new boxes & are known to steal your credit card info. You'll be billed for purchases in downtown Israel. Play at your own risk!

  • Don't forget the magic pixies.

  • What exactly is a fake Jew? What do they do?

  • Zionist Israel, talmud readers and followers. Neo Conservatives, no blood line ties, but headline creators to feed their own selfish interest. NYC is full of these fakes.

  • That's weird... why would someone fake to be... I don't understand the world anymore.

  • Yes, it's very weird. They love labels and word games. Master creators in trends in political correctness. Can destroy a political career within hours of you speaking against Zionist Israel. YouTube "Talmud" and you'll learn a lot about Neo Consevatives. They're not Jews nor Conservative and they have NYC in their pocket, from the show room to the court room, you'll lose, they'll win and you're outta money. You've been warned.

  • cheers im going to NY for the first time in 3 weeks, ive heard about all these cons they do, thanks for the tip ;)

  • Don't expect to see it. Keep your eyes open and everything, but New York is a fairly low crime city these days. Have fun!

  • There used to be a lot of this in NY. It's entertainment! you watch it from a safe distance and have your pocket picked.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Did You Know :

The shell game has been played at least since the Middle Ages, as evidenced by several paintings of that time. A book published in England in 1670 (Hull Elections - Richard Perry and his fiddler wife) mentions the thimblerig game. In the 1790s, it was called "thimblerig" as it was originally played using sewing thimbles. Later, walnut shells were used, and today the use of bottle caps is very common also the use of cards , nicknamed the lucky queen because they used a red queen.

  • so is this video a metaphor for the election just a big con game where every one will loose

  • OMG you make me want to go back to NY! love it.

  • I love your videos!!

  • This is a brave video to be applauded.

Street means different things to different people. Skid Row, Easy Street, Death Row...

Here and now ARE gangs, organised crime, Money and Cheap lives counterfeited into some kind of blue flashing lights discotheque.

GOOD VIDEO, a big risk that paid off!

  • Hey I'd lost 40£ in this f***ing trick game in London.. It should be banned!!

  • Freedom of assembly (in the US where this is).

    It SHOULDN'T be illeagal

  • I'm sure it's illegal in both countries. Whether it's considered fraud, or theft, or something else it's definitely a crime.

  • Perhaps I'm just to ignorantwhen it comes to this topic... I don't know a lot as a teenager, and I admit it.

  • $4.00 dollars each just to be con artist what a rip off. reminds me of a stupid ass in high school that made like a small raffle like game that every idiot( which these guys were) bet one dollar to guess the score between 2 soccer teams. and the winner gets the money but the stupid ass takes half of from the winning also and the winner is off with barely 25 bucks or so.

  • Money spelled backwards is yenom.

  • So the story goes about a fool and his money. Even legitimate gambling I don't understand.

  • I can tell you that even though I live in Las Vegas, I don't understand why people gamble. It just doesn't make sense when 50% of them know they are probably going to lose.

  • well zoolander i have gotten my chances in going to vegas i always have the luck of winning i went to vegas with 80 bucks in my pocket and came back with 350 plus my 80 which it was 430 bucks hehehe

  • Very nice. Conning is quite fascinating, I suggest you look up the British TV show "The Real Hustle"

  • wow...it's interesting to me that ppl still fall for this trick. i mean i haven't been around that long and i wouldn't fall for that...

    great vid!

    <33

  • ahh! you're back XD

Even after the election is over, i'll know you'll have interesting stories to share XD

  • Most people are more gullible than they think they are. The most dangerous thing you can think going into any con is that you're too smart to be conned. Cons aren't intelligence tests, they're emotional manipulation.

  • Look how kind Joe is for sharing these tips! You are a true progressive. I admire your strength and being willing to open up. Dahr Jamail said speaking from the heart is a mixture of pain and relief. I agree. May God bless you.

  • Thats good to know. Now when we visit NYC we wont be complete noobs.

  • Awesome! By the way, rule number 1 for blending in is no fanny packs.

  • I could only imagine someone with a debilitative gambling addiction actually playing a game in which cards are dealt over a milk crate.

  • heh. this happened to you didnt it joe?

  • That's a good guess, but I was not the kid :)

  • Wow

    Awesome story man!

  • Thats CRAZY lol

  • That was a nice break from politics.

  • I can see how someone might get caught up in it even if they know it's a con. the guy trying to twist your arm about his glasses is a thief, pure and simple.

  • :) + :) = :):)

  • I wonder how that dumbass got into NYU to begin with.

  • Ill tell you how he got into NYU. Some people are very intelligent but lack common sense, or street smarts. Those qualities are invaluable in a place like New York city. Everybody gets conned at some point in their life, especially in largely populated urban areas like good ol' New York City. Where there are tons of people there the unscrupulous will be. Its the classic predator vs. prey scenario. Individuals who are street smart try to minimize or eliminate the prospect of getting conned.

  • interesting

  • Oh, the wonderful things I miss by living in Montana.

  • Thanks for warning this Canadian ;)

  • Very interesting.

How do you know so much about this, Joe?

  • Hey Joe, when I was young, preteen years my mother had this boyfriend for a few months, a carny guy had a couple spider monkies and whatever for his show, anyways he was a professional card sharp, he taught us the 3cardcon (monte) he also taugh some ways to give the con a serious bad day. Winning is impossible for the most part, but if done right, you can win and piss all over his day by exposing the nature of the 3cm..anyways nice video, love it as usual.. Peace out. come sub me fool! lol

  • Good vid

  • Thanks for the info.

  • lol welcome to nyu

    good video

  • I actually do this to people all the time.

I also use my friends to pretend to win.

I don't play for money; in fact I show people the trick and they'll hopefully never get conned.

  • Gives me an idea for my next video...

  • Good subject. We all have to remember that if it was a legit form of a gambling game, we would see it in a casino and not on the street. This game would never be legit for a casino. It is too simple and anyone can win.

  • You mean lose?

  • How could a person NOT know thats a grift?!?

  • Most people are stupid, well, in my experience. It's very unfortunate.

  • boston's the same only scaled down... you kind of have to look for them

  • yeah i see these guys all the time always trying to hustle you... sometimes they also have pickpocketers working for them..cuz you are so absorbed int eh game and such a big crowd youre sometimes unaware of your surroundings..gotta love those tourist traps..NOT

  • wow. you never people like that in the western US.
